finally got it for my Nintendo Switch, I am happy to play them. The Genesis was my actual first video game system and I played them with my Dad who passed away almost 20 years ago. Welcome back, Childhood!!
A perfect example of why certain videogames are so special and important for people...choked me up a bit reading ur comment tbh. Lol... Happy you have this game for yourself to be able to tap into that time! Good medicine for the soul! 👍
But forget the predictable Genesis compilation every generation... how about a Saturn collection?! Daddy needs Sonic R in 4K! Daytona USA, SEGA Rally, Nights, Clockwork Knight, Panzer Dragoon, Virtua Fighter, that collection would be lit and considering how friggin expensive Saturn stuff is to cellect, a compilation would be a no-brainer to buy.
If it's alright, I'm going to steal "Daddy needs Sonic R in 4K!" as a phrase for everyday use Also going to get it printed on a shirt along with a low quality Tails doll jpeg :D
The problem is the Saturn was infamously difficult the program for. Thus, emulation has been a problem with it for years. I'm also pretty sure that Panzer Dragoon Saga's code is lost, and if Sega were to do a Saturn collection, that game is mandatory.
For anyone curious, there are 17 games new to this collection that weren't in the last. These include games like Gunstar Heroes, Shadow Dancer, and Crackdown.
I still hope they do add more titles which includes the Sega-CD library and then the 32X library. Also add some hidden unlockables like playable arcade versions of the Genesis ports.
Probably lacking due to generally low sales of the Saturn, and subpar Dreamcast. It's a sad reality, but this is also Sega we're talking about, and there are like 100+ classic gems they have never once released on a compilation package, but at least this one has only Genesis games, not gipping players by saying 80, and only meaning 40 real genesis games and 40 crappy homebrew trash. We'll probably have to settle for small rereleases like Shenmue, and maybe something like a Shining Force package. I'd personally love to play Panzer Dragoon, but unlike Genesis games the Saturn games were a major hassle. SEGA has stated numerous times a large number of the games were never converted over to any database, and the original game code is lost, while the games themselves are so complex due to the nature of the hardware that they would have to recreate the tools from scratch. Essentially, don't count on anything Saturn ever. Not unless the Saturn emulation groups decide to release toolkits based on Saturn architecture, and SEGA buys the rights and ownership of them, and keeps them in the public sphere. Then...then maybe Saturn, but Dreamcast is a possibility, though again I point to Shenmue's treatment.
It may be a challenge to emulate Saturn, but I'm sure that it is doable and that it would be a product with a large audience. I would love to have a Saturn collection or even a Saturn console with pre-loaded games.
Thersites the Historian finding either system on ebay is not hard. For saturn buy a pro action replay and you can buy japanese versions of games for cheap; usually free shipping too. For dreamcast its a little more expensive to get a switch disc. But then you can still buy japanese version way cheap. The funny thing is that unless its and rpg or fire pro wrestling most of their games are in english so no worries.
I've bought every Genesis collection there is and have got this as well! The Genesis was the gateway to my imagination growing up. so many incredible experiences
SupaPixelGirl Hey Becca! I'm still playing my Sega Classic by At Games! It's like a plug in play but Sega licensed it with all the games in this compilation. Give or take a couple here and there. I really like it.
Would be nice if they add some third party games like X-Men 2 Clone Wars, TMNT: The Hyperstone Heist, Tiny Toons Adventures - Buster's Hidden Treasures, Shadowrun, etc... But i guess that would too much to asks
I find most people buy these collections for a handful of games and the rest are all bonus. For me, it's Streets of Rage, Shining Force, and Sonic games. That's worth the price for me! I look forward to trying the rest of games, though.
ResidentXombie what's wrong with discovering something and enjoying it years after release. How do you know if i even had the means of getting one then
I want a Saturn collection too. Dreamcast games get re-released all the time. Other than NiGHTS I can't recall seeing anything else from the Saturn getting a second chance.
Not having Sonic 3 and its counterpart is a big No from me in buying this collection. Is astonishing to me that a such a classic is not present in this compilation. Such a shame really :(
It seems like they just re-released the SEGA compilation from last generation with a few different games. Let's add some Dreamcast and Saturn collections!
I already have this pre-ordered but I had no idea there was rewind/fast-forward and challenges. The Mega Man Legacy Collections challenges were so great for me so I hope these are close to as addicting as those ones. So pumped for this collection.
Got an snes mini after the rush. Let my stepson play. He quit after 45-60 mins. He said the games you and mom played are too hard. He's used to games with checkpoints every 30 seconds. So when he died and had to start the whole level over he just gave up. Claims the gam3 is broken and unfair. He blames the game for his poor skills.
Haha, that's kinda cute hearing these stories. Gamers from this age are too used to having things handed to 'em, we had to grind for every stage/level we passed back then!
Great collection of Sega Genesis games. Only thing I wished it had was Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles but that's alright. Alot of these games I never played growing up so it's nice to experience them for the first time as an adult.
I love watching your channel of how positive you are about spreading the goodness of old games. I'm 47 years old and it's very cool to see you so excited about these games. I went into gamestop yesterday November 2 2018 to buy Red Dead Redemption 2... I came out buying this game $30 us dollars brand new and a PlayStation 4 controller copper color. I'm very happy with the choice. Just playing Phantasy Star 2 right now. Just the Phantasy Star 2, 3, and 4 is worth the buy for me. I love how you just praise this game because I feel the same way. Most of these games I never played even Phantasy Star series. I love JRPG games. I was playing the Final Fantasy 7 on the PlayStation 4 right now before I got this game. I love the grinding of Final Fantasy 1 was and the Phantasy Star 2 is the same way. Love it. Keep spreading the positive so players like me can see these gold gem out there. As I've said before, you are a True Happy Console Gamer.
I wish this compilation had some of the E.A games. Those were among the best on sega genesis. Road Rash 1-3, mutant league football, General Chaos, the Haunting, Skitchin, etc. Companies should stop caring about their licenses from their 25 year old dormant games.
They add Revenge of Death Adder and I would gladly buy this collection even if it's DLC. But considering it's Sega, they won't. If anything DLC would remove more games :P
Is this in 4k? Also online play because there was only special digital versions of some of these games that went online on PS3/360 like Golden Axe, Toejam & Earl, and Streets of Rage 2
Got this already on PS3...I think it's exactly the same^^ So good for anyone who missed this it's a really great Compilation with lot's of Blast Processing^^ :p
I noticed on the bottom shelf in the virtual room there are only a few games on that shelf. I just hope we can download some DLC’s to enhance our collection.
Set Pixel Scaling to EPX in the Emulation options and prepare to be blown away. This rectifies the issue of old games looking super pixelated on today’s giant HD displays by basically reducing pixel size and adding more pixels. Maybe I’m late to this feature in the emulation world, but my Raspberry Pi does nothing like this. There are more extreme pixel scaling options that smooth out the image even further, but those make it look too cartoony for me.
LOL Sonic GENESIS collection was also my most played game on 360 and I played a stupid amount of Modern Warfare 2 and Halo 3&4, still play the GENESIS collection today, loved that system, so many games and the arcade downloads
Was the question ever confirmed it you look at the review video, IF THERE ARE unlockables, like in the xbox360 and ps3 collection versions such as the Phantasy Star 1 unlockable?
This is an o.k. collection... BUT there is a disturbing lack of SHMUPS in it!!! The only game is Biohazard Battle, a very cool and unique shooter, but there were dozens more... Whip Rush, Sol-Deace, , Elemental Master, Undead Line, Wings of Wor, Arrow Flash, Hellfire, Gaiares, Air Busters, Trouble Shooter, Vapor Trail, Fire Mustang, Raiden Trad, Thunder Force 2, 3 and 4, Truxton, Task Force Harrier Ex, Viewpoint, Insector X, Grey Lancer, Darius 2, etc., etc. and etc.
how sad that they can´t fully enjoy our genesis feeling, but its better than a lot of violent games these days and at least understand some nostalgic input that we adults have felt!!
Except I think the Steam version had packs of games as DLC? I'm not exactly sure how it worked, I just bought all the games that were available at the time...
I remember buying Toejam and Earl and some other games separately and having them show up in the Genesis collection. I think it ended up being 60 or 64 total.
I got this for LANDSTALKER and the Phantasy Star games, love them, still got my Mega Drive at my parents house but don't have the time or space for it in my home so great to finally sit down and play some of my fave RPGs.
It's fantastic set and i'm loving it. I'm still kinda disappointed they didn't include Phantasy Star and developer interviews. Inclusion of Wonderboy in Monter World is goddamn diamond, though! Also some audio problems. 7/10
Hey Jonnie, you should look into becoming an Amazon associate. People can buy games that you review and I think you get a little kickback. Just saying - I bought this SG Classics game based on your review and it would be great if fans of your content could support you. Keep it up with the great videos!
I live your channel and show. You remind me of me in a lot of ways. I was always the huge Sega fan that tried to bridge the gap at school between Sega-Nintendo-Turbo Grafx fans to no avail. I even knew people like that ass hat you have discussed before...you know the one "Turbo Grafx sucks, I've never played one but they just suck"- I can't stand these people. At any rate, I of course purchased this yesterday and am living it. My fiance is a little younger than us (she is 26) and is a diehard gamer (I am a lucky one). This has given me the chance to introduce the Sega Genesis to her. We both love gaming and we have two 4K screens, 2 PSPRO'S, Xbox 1's, and a gaming PC in our bedroom (sharing sucks). My fiance loves Disgaea and Final Fantasy Tactics and as soon as I showed her Shining Force 1+2 she light up. She was asking me "...let me know when you're ready to let me play that." Very cute, I just bought a second copy today and when she returns from work it will be waiting for her. Oh, and there are actually 54 games in this set, I only mention it as you said it was 50 earlier. Not trying to be one of those guys, your videos are the best on RU-vid bar none. There are no unlockables unfortunately.
I love collections as well 50 games is awesome Sega should use this collection as a base to port more old games Like Fighter pack collection ETC eternal champions so on I Wouldn't mind paying a buck or two for more games as 50games for price is awesome. Sega needs more collections of its consoles. At this point Sega should try and get every one of its games it can into collections one for gamers one for preservation, one for Future gamers to enjoy some great classics. I get licensing issuess, I.e dead devs publishers, who owns rights but Sega should be activly pursueing these issues as the Sega fanbase is still out there hungry for its backcatalouge and collections like these. Sega saturn dreamcast ETC For the ones that are good but unlikely to get remakes or future ports.
i'd like a compilation of more obscure Arcade games. Games like Top Skater Arcade, Indy 500, Diehard Arcade, Alien Swarm, Hang on, Outrun, that shooter game in Yakuza 3 and the Virtua Fighter Series. I'd Include Shenmue but they're re-releasing that already.
Bah. These Sega compilations are so redundant now. You could fit every game in the Sega library prior to the Dreamcast on one disc and they expect you to keep paying for pretty much the same handful of games over and over again. I know there are licensing issues but still they have a wealth of games from the past that they never re-released.
Where is Super Hang-On? I want a Genesis collection, but Super Hang-On should be included. Alien Storm, Streets of Rage 1-3, and Beyond Oasis were few of my favorites, so I’m glad to see them.
Steam version has official Workshop support for mods. Streets of Rage 2 has mods to play as Street Fighter characters which is amazing. I know you're the Happy Console Gamer but this is one time when the PC version is much, much better. Well worth checking out for the Workshop support alone. There's even some slightly questionable mods that make entire Genesis games out of Sonic 1 as the base game. Meaning the PC version has MANY more other Genesis games on it too through mods.
There is currently a Steam version of this. I got it with a Humbe Bundle a couple of years ago. I think it had just came out when I got it, but it was almost unplayable. The interface was glitchy, the games wouldn't load properly sometimes. It was a mess. I remember after like 5 minutes of messing with it I told my girlfriend it was, hands down, the worst emulator I've ever used. But, if you want to check it out, it's called "Sega Mega Drive & Genesis Classics". I haven't played it in about 2 years, so there's a good chance it's been updated. The reviews are much more positive now then they were back then. They've also added Steam Workshop support and new games (59 total).
I wonder why Revenge of Shinobi gets so much love. Sure, it's a good game, but the third one in the series is so much better, yet hardly anyone ever talks about it - at least from what I've seen. Maybe it had to do with the way it was released originally or something.
Streets Of Rage is such a Final Fight wannabe. I wasn't even aware of this Sega Genesis Classics game until I saw it at a store the other day. And I bought it instantly. Even though I may never get around to playing it.
I also thought of it as a FF copycat when part 1 came out, but when 2 was released? It left FF in the dust, took the beat 'em up games to an all new standard, part 3 even upped it again. Nobody cares about FF after part 1 so you tell me what's the better franchise?
For people who preorder a physical poster you get a double sided poster. Also any xbox owners out there i recommend the hyperkin x91 for retro games just a suggestion.
It's good to see this Steam version available on consoles. It's about time Sega got around to doing this. BTW Fantasy Zone was the Arcade version on the 360/PS3 Sonic's collection.
You sound like fun?. Cool review enjoyed it heaps?. What I would really like 2 see is an iconic master system collection?👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍.
It looks like this collection has a few games that the ultimate genesis collection didn't have, but it's also missing a lot without all of those unlockable arcade & master system games, & the Ecco the Dolphin games, & Sonic 3, & Sonic & Knuckles... But I've never played either of those Wonder Boy games before, so I'll probably still buy it sooner or later. And like you, I think it's good that the younger generations will have a more easily accessible way of playing some of these good old somewhat expensive games.
Love theese compilations. Grew up with the Mega Drive, so Im getting this for sure. Btw, love to see that Landatalker is on it :) great game. Game a lot Johnny \../
Hi Johnny, great video as always, really happy to see that Kid Chameleon is on there! I used to play it as kid on my dad's mega drive, the nostaglia is real! :)
For steam users you can buy individual games for quite cheap if you don't want to get the whole collection (which is what I did for the shining force series)
Great review! I hope they put in the unlockables that was the best part of the collections on the old one. Im still waiting for my review copy but they say its on its way.
