By far. In my opinion it's the best watch in Seikos current lineup. Every now and then they release an absolute banger at a price where it feels more like a gift than a purchase. Hope they do some other reinterpretations in the future. They did great with the divers (1965, willard etc...) and they kinda failed with the new king seikos (i adore the old king siekos. If you don't own one already i highly recommend them. The prices go up but you can grab them under 600 dollars right now what is an absolute steal. They were designed to rival Rolex in the 60's and 70's. The finishing is 98% Grand Seiko level what means they beat every swiss-watch in that period when it comes to finishing. I own a 50 year old 5625-7111 and it holds time with +1sec per day. Insane for an watch with that age.)

Now this looks good, the champagne sunburst dial is wonderfully understated. I have to agree though that for me the date just knocks the symmetry of the dial, a date at 6 or no date at all would be preferred but this would not be a show stopper at all. Great macro shots of that dial and inner chapter ring.

Despite the fact that 99% of all analogue watches sold to the general public have a date at the 3 position,but according to you Seiko should start making watches to the teeny,tiny percentage of watch enthusiasts that don't like date windows.....sounds like a pretty stupid move to me.

Man I can’t decide between this and the blue dial. The only thing that worries me about the blue is that I feel like it will be hard to see the dial without good light hitting it but this cream one you can see the dial all the time. Tough choice!

You are right. I own a few models like King Seiko, This Alpinist with the green dial, the Flightmaster, The Willard. they just feel great on the wrist. It sounds stupid but when i'm wearing them i just feel more "professional"😂 A walk through the woods with my dog feels like an expedition when i'm wearing the alpinist. A dive in a pool feels like a adventure by Custeau while wearing a Willard. When i'm in the office i feel like a 70's japanese Buisnessman while wearing my Hi-Beat King Seiko. Seiko provides so much fun.

I preordered a spb243 instead from Sakura watches (from the US) bought it for around 730 including shipping. Good price and service if you guys are looking for a clean japanese watch. The site he's giving charges 100 dollars more, be smart guys. Hopefully I can get my hands on a green metal casioak next month (g-shock gm-2100b-3a).

Got this watch last week and it's now my favourite watch to wear in my collection, it looks so special in person, I don't recommend for anyone with a big wrist. My only critique is the thickness if I had to choose one, it would be 🔥 if it were slimmer.

I really like watch companies delving into their heritage inventory and re-issuing their classics. I would call the face color Champagne vs cream. :). I think the original did not have a date window, but I need that complication. I wouldn't mind having drilled lugs, otherwise, I scratch the hell out of the lugs. The Timegrapher metrics were excellent. Btw, you're wearing a great t-shirt in the opening.

This is the version which Ill buy.Great summer watch.Already got a Barton linen white strap in 19.Im in shock it have blue lume,thats even better🤩I was thinking about selling the bracelet,I dont like oyster type,but it have a small clasp so Ill check it first.Im thinking about ordering it already for 637€,but maybe Ill wait till it hits the stores for good,maybe until mid August.For sure it have some flaws,date wheel in white,non signed crown and overall thickness,but its so nice looking that I can live with that

Someone got the new Alpinist a little early, nice! My only complaint is that I wish they would have made this series of Alpinist a little thinner, the last couple Alpinists had the same case thickness. Overall a very nice watch.

In the past year I feel like SEIKO has just killed it in the new watches they have brought out. Whether it is the Alpinist line(seems like about 40 versions of that), or the Sharp Edge series, or the multiple MAS62 versions, they are all gorgeous and make me want to spend way too much money. Luckily for me I am a cheap SOB and have a hard time parting with my money. The other problem I have is the pricing that SEIKO has gone to. They probably are worth the higher prices that SEIKO is now charging, but having bought my SARB035 for $310, and my Gen 1 Monster for $195, as well as the low prices on my SNK and others, I am spoiled by the past value of the old SEIKO. Now they are in MIDO, Hamilton, Tissot and many other Swiss price ranges, so there is competition, but I do love my Japanese watches. "sigh", such a 1st world problem.

Still regret selling my sarb033 and 035 but that was before I had my sponsor so I had to flip more often for the channel. And SEIKO is killing it in 2020 and 21. Future looks bright.

Hey people ! We are living in a world where spending a ton of money to buy pure shit is the new way of life : when you bought a sub in 2000, it was 3000€ after discissing with the AD. Why Seiko would be the only to get cheap ? Their watches worth a lot more than Rolex if you consider Grand Seiko. Be happy to have know good days but move on now...

Good review and such a lovely looking reimagining of the Laurel Alpinist. However, if I could change just one thing, it would be to get rid of that display caseback for a mm off the thickness. Over 13mm for a sub 40mm non-diver is just unnecessary in my opinion. The Sinn 556 has the same depth rating but is only just over 10mm thick and still has a display back. OK, the Seiko has a domed crystal, but still.

@@EscapementWatch color comes down to preference and reason for buying. There are not many great green dial watches, so ... if this one is quality, it might be a great green piece! I collect these for my wife, so colors are important to wear with outfits and seasons.

Love the water resistance. A bit of a tame choice, but I suppose if you need just one good everyday GADA watch this'd fit the bill nicely. Date complication adds everyday practicality for somebody who just needs one capable automatic watch. Won't add this to a collection that already has some other WR and daily options though. I'd choose one of these before a number of entry Tissots and Hamiltons (probably not before all of them, mind you) but I think I'd save and spring for an entry level Sinn if I were in the market for the one-watch-GADA.

I think this watch looks amazing. But "We don't need the Sarb033/035" statement is a bit much. Sarb was intended as more dressy in my opinion. This can pull off the same thing to a degree but slightly more sporty than dressy. But the price of a Sarb is where the magic was. At even if that price was $100 more (at $400), the Sarb would still be an amazing deal. This watch here compares more to the Sarx033/035.

You and me both! Still regret selling my sarb033/035 those were keepers but back when I started I didn't have channel sponsor to help me get watches. This channel has made me into a flipper ironically however, some stay. My stowa is 1 year old almost and it really allowed me to dial in my tastes to 11! So even a 10/10 can be flipped. lol

Tough question...I'd say this is a true successor to the 035 but with a slightly more sporty nature with big lume indices, while the sarb035 is more dressy. This is a better sports watch but Is it a better watch??? I think its equal just depends on your style preference.

I love the dial, but Seiko and Grand Seiko make watches that are just too thick for my taste. 13.5mm thick for a 39mm watch is just too much for a dial this classy.

Yes its true. a flat sapphire no display caseback would have made this about 12. Check out my SPB131 ultra thin seiko hidden gem.

@@EscapementWatch I think a watch of this style (the Alpinist) with 10bar resistance should be 11.5 mm or under. That's just me I guess, I really prefer thinner watches. I have a Glycine Combat Sub that's only 11mm thick with 20 bar of resistance!

Spb117 has flat sapphire which is cheaper to produce. This one has curved. Spb117 has pressed dial indices. this one has applied. This is also a new case shape for seiko so higher costs in producing. spb117 has same old sarb017 case they produced almost 20 years ago

@@EscapementWatch look back the SPB117 has applied indices very similar to the SPB241. I doubt Seiko made a specially a new case for the SPB241and even if they did the price difference from what you mention will not make the US$ 180,- be fair and say as always Seiko up the price again. Don't get me wrong it is their good right to do so. But there are other watches with better value out there. But yeah i get it this is the watch you like. But even so it don't justify the higher price. And yes i get it the crystal is more expensive to make but that doesn't make the difference i could say the SPB117 should be the more expansive one as it has more parts (the compass complication)

@@EscapementWatch a quick google search made me find this This Seiko Alpinist SARB017 was discontinued by Seiko in February 2018 (along with the entire SARB line) and the price has increased by roughly $125 to date, up to about $475 at the time of this post so 3 years alter the nearly $300 more is justified ?

I agree from a nostaligic standpoint, but the fact is - prospex is a huge part of the branding process to separate lines of quality in products. This is a great piece.

@@JayandSarah 15 years of collecting. Seiko puts this logo on watches that have Quality control/quality assurance issues that are inexcusable. Is it OK to spend $1200 on a Homage watch from a movie… That has a Bezel that does not line up with a chapter ring…? And That does not line up with the markers? A $1200 watch that loses 17 seconds per day? A $1200 watch that has a bracelet that is not as good as the $250 homage watch from China? As a long time collector…I can confidently exclaim that Seiko is ripping you off!

The Swiss used to give boards to have the most accurate watches all the way up untilSeiko decided they want to get involved and start doing it and then when Seiko started winning all the time then they quit doing it

Yep I did. However, we have scheduled watches coming in, so if there is free time the intro will be film before the watch lands! That's what happened here! I bought a 213 to tide me over until a padi or STO 63mas releases next year.

I am deeply disappointed with this watch, having seen the original. How can it be called an ALPINIST if it does not say ALPINIST on the dial like the 14041 Laurel Alpinist, in that amazing font? The presage logo also does not do it favours (same as on my SPB149). Adding the name and perhaps some inner lume squares like the Champion J13040 would be mind-blowing, this is just a massive missed opportunity to me…

I think alpinist name might have some trademark issues (only reason why it disappeared???) I don't mind it not being on the dial here. I do mind it not being on the limited re-creation 3000 dollar version. That is a huge let down. The king seiko got King Seiko on the dial. Why not alpinist? and yes the typography of that Laurel is sublime! and the Champion alpinist is the greatest!!!!!! Hope for a remake one day. A faithful one.

Yes the originals are great watches, the only downside for me is that they had plated cases I believe.
