Selectamatic Hydraulics are fixed! What's next? Power Assist Cylinder? | David Brown 990 #24

All the work on the hydraulics has paid off! All is working just like it should. What's next for my 990 David Brown? Well, there's work to be done on the Power Assist Cylinder - it leaks really badly, and other work to be done to get some assorted leaks fixed up. The cold start needs to be looked at again, and the inspection plates on the engine need a gasket I think. If you see something I should fix up, let me know in the comments!

great to see you back, I was starting to get messages saying they wished your tractor would break so you'd make more video's, Your more than capable of sorting that cylinder, remember don't over think it it's only nuts and bolts, and messy oil. When you start you other tractor video everything the viewers will always want to see it. have a great day.

I’ve got most of the parts I need to add the power assisted steering to mine. I’m looking forward to your rebuild so I can make sure I’m putting it together correctly!!

Well, we'll see if I can actually do it myself. I'm kind of nervous about it. It's going to be a couple of months before I tackle it though. Have to get through food plot planting season and I'm fine with a little oil leaking out for now. Thanks for watching, and thanks for the comment!

Good to see you back. Your other tractor is same age as mine 1974. Still fighting with the hydraulic lift on mine. M😀

Will do! Going to be awhile though, life getting in the way of working on the tractor.

The cylinder rebuild on my 990 turned out to be a challenge. The cylinder does not come apart very easy. Ended up having to take it to hydraulic cylinder shop, they had to machine some new tools to get it apart and back together. The pump is pretty straightforward, however the orings are square edge and metric. Good luck.

Thanks a lot Tom! That's my backup plan is a hydraulic shop. How far were you able to get it broken down yourself before getting stuck? The inner tube? I've got a couple of service manuals for it and it seems straight-forward, but I'm going to treat it like its the only on left on the planet. And it might as well be, I can't seem to find any replacements anywhere, they're snapped up as soon as ones available somewhere from the places I've been calling. A couple of places I've called keep wanting me to send it in and let them do the refurbishment. 400 to 500 dollars for that. I think I'll have a go at it first tho.

Couldn’t get the end screwed out. You got to be careful, they extremely fine threads and you could easily damage and I doubt it could be rethreaded. The hydraulic shop near me is a combo hydraulic/machine shop and they struggled to get it disassembled and ultimately had to make some tools to get through it. I give up on the cylinder pretty quick. The pump is pretty easy. Can’t say they work yet. The pump, pumps, but the steering column is still not installed to check the power assisted power steering. Very, very poor design and I see why it only was used a few years. I think the 49 engine come out in 69 or 70, partly because of the redesign of the power steering and changes to the block for the redesigned power steering system. With ours, I think they just tried to make something work for us Americans

same here the assist cylinder is very hard to work on.also had to machine tool to get apart and if the fine threads.are worn any at all you will have to grind the ends of them off to get apart .air tool is the only way you can move the threaded caps..hope you have better luck than I..AFTER ALL THAT GOT BACK TOGETHER AND DIDNT WORK

Overhauling my sylinder at the moment.Its fully dismantled right now, going to assemble next weekend if i find some seals and mabe some new ball joints. Hard to find parts for it,it seems like…

The power assist cylinder?? Oh, I'm very interested in your experiences with disassembly/reassembly. What tools did you use/make for it? Hopefully it's just o-rings that's needed on mine. There's a manual I'll link to below for it that has disassembly/reassembly instructions. I haven't started the process for mine yet. drive.google.com/file/d/1cgL4cMbvCIHkEg4o_r9moNCDYGkwkJem/view?usp=sharing Here's my "steering" folder: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ELYxZAD8kIbOLg8oruWbyjHSzlETvYS0?usp=sharing

@@path.of.discovery its pretty simple to take apart, made some custom tools to open the ends of the sylinder. The o rings are pretty standard and can easaly be replaced. Thank you for the manual👌🏽

@@path.of.discovery assebely is done👌🏽👌🏽 hard to find seals, had to get them made. The treads in side the sylinder is real fine so be gentle, easy to crosstread. Also when you push the «valvebody» back into the sylinder its real easy to tear the o ring. Had to take it apart one time because of that. Also when adjusting the slack in the ball joints, dont make the inner one to thight, that will make it turn right all the time, ask me how i know…
@path.of.discovery
@path.of.discovery 3 месяца назад
@@turbodiesel4932 Ok, very good information there! Where'd you get the seals made from? I read that some of the tooling in the service manual is for exactly that, keeping the o-rings from tearing. How'd you get the valve body back in without tearing the oring? Thank you so much for the descriptions here! going to help a lot a people out!

Shane , if your power steering is leaking slightly add about a cup of brake fluid to your power steering reservoir. In a while it will stop leaking completely

Hi again, I got an issue with control lever handle right now. I tried to dissambled it for painting. As it was a bit too complicated, the only thing that I was able to remove were both nuts and a plastic cap on right side of lever. I suppose I also removed the part called friction plate. Issue now is that when pulled down, the lever handle doesn't stay in down position. It feels like it's spring load... I will remove nuts again because I'm not sure I've putted everything back. In fact, I'd say that the lever has nearly no friction. I suppose it's spring loaded from the spring inside the control lever housing AND that maybe lever nuts need to be tightened a bit more. I didn't open the valve housing at all. Control lever handle was working correctly before (!) I tried to disassemble it. You really are my hope to fix it properly and fast. Thanks.

There's a couple of friction washers that keep the control lever in place. Have you seen the video where I disassemble/reassemble my control lever on the bench? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CsbGLB5Ja9g.htmlsi=0Txfi3Q761koXoLi

@@path.of.discovery Hi again. Many thanks for your precious help. Seems like I've putted friction plate on the wrong side. We'll look at it closely. It's about the end for my DB880. It looks a lot like when it got out of Melthan Mills back in 1967. Next year will be dedicated to original front loader. My DB is a merge of two tractors. Front end is a 1966 with original 3 cylinders 46 HP diesel engine and rear end is a 12 none synchro speeds from 1968. After a kick calculation, I've spent more than $20000 total (Canadian currency) to get everything done. I would never do this again. If I knew from the beginning that it would end up like this, I would bought a 1978 DB885 with a good mechanical instead. I would ending up today with a tractor a bit younger and much less money spent on the project. I REALLY wanted the 880 ! Now I got it !

@@path.of.discovery About the final drives... That's a real pain in the ass on those tractors. Transmission too. Bearing issue. It can get soooooo noisy. I would change all the bearings if I could but brake drum is press fit on main shaft. Needs heat and a puller. There are shims in the housing that have to be precisely put back. Mine are a bit noisy but not enough to change all bearings. I will flush the 80 oil gear and put some 140 instead. Final drive are the most beaten parts on the tractor. All pulling power, traction and braking is done in that area. No wonder they "FINALLY" get noisy.
