I enjoyed your review of the show than I did the actual show, so that's saying a lot...and I absolutely agree with everything you said. I feel as though they didn't do her justice with this series, and I pray that we aren't saying the same thing when part 2 is released. Keep doing what you're doing, my favorite review on RU-vid thus far. 🙏👌
Suzette literally just hired Lifetime producers and then say Netflix was behind the series 😂💀 it honestly gave Lifetime vibes rather then a Netflix tv series
It felt like I was watching the Abraham, AB and Suzette show. 🙄 Yes, they were a apart of Selena’s legacy but did they really have to take all the spotlight and push Selena to the side? Not to be rude but I’m not it interested in their stories. I wanted them to show us more about Selena. We know she was warm, humble, beautiful, talented, and loved fashion but I wanted to see something more. I would rather watch a series from Chris’ perspective than this. They could’ve done better.
Unfortunately Abraham took away all rights from Chris to use Selena’s name. Only her father can make use of her name and everything Selena. He never really liked Chris anyway so its not surprising.
I think the family's tight control of her legacy is what has killed this. They don't want to show anything but surface level things. Its a shame, I think it would have been far more interesting coming from Chris side.
@@Vertigotheatre1 now her dad is getting his karma because he's being sued for making the series after signing a contract. He deserves it for what he's been putting Chris through. I don't even know why he still doesn't like her husband. Selena would be disappointed with the way he's treating him
Suzzette is one of the producers for the series. In one of the episodes, they discuss about the rebranding to from Selena y los dinos to Selena alone when marketing to the English market. This series is basically built upon that principle, behind the brand that most people know, there is the group that helped shaped it. It’s the family who wanted the series to flow this way since everyone already knows Selena’s backstory, so it was good to flesh out everything else around her.
@@TXejas19 and selfish. Suzette was thotting and bopping with Ricky* and Ron but as soon as Selena likes Chris its "you are going to ruin this. You'll destroy the band".
I swear, a bad wig can really throw me out of a film or show. It comes across more as playing dress up than actually being the character they are portraying
During the first scene the look convinced me but then.. it was not Selena. Not only the looks but the energy. In my opinion, she was embodying Jlos Selena. As if she Google how to impersonate Selena and came across to the Selena movie. Also, sometimes she sound Puerto Rican.
Completely agree with you on that. I saw different flaws to the series once I started watching episode 1: Christian doesn’t resemble Selena at all, she doesn’t have the dancing skills, doesn’t lip sync properly, the wigs look cheap and ugly as hell, couldn’t feel a connection with any of the characters... I dunno, it was a bit hard to digest.
what u don't know is that the genious people behind that music, was actually ricky and pete astudillo. they were the ones that would help ab they dont' get enough credit specially ricky their keyboardist. if u look up pete astudillo his worth 18 milion a year. check the credits and u wil always see ricky or pete on the credits. even when they were releasing the english selena album pete astudillo was called to 'help' produce the album.
The dad came across as a "Kris Jenner" dad-ager type of person... awful! I hated his guts the whole time, he reminds me of the kid beauty pageant moms! Frustrated because they couldn't get the crown themselves so they are now pushing their kids so they can live their dream. I hope it wasn't as bad as it was portrayed in the series.
@@mayraortiz6778 Yeah i just heard about that...that's terrible that they'd do that to Chris when he really loved her and still does to this day. Thank you for messaging me about this.
The main actress didn’t shine sparkle the way Selena did she wasn’t silly she came off dry you see in Selena interview she was funny and sweet and she was a star!! This was so dry .
Unfortunately that will more than likely never happen just because the family is very protective over her story understandably of course but he has no rights to her story and sadly that means he won't get to make anything. He tried already but was stopped by her father
I mean of course a narcissist would hate the person who their daughter is trying to live her own life with. And Chris straight up told Abraham that he wasn't going to control her and he was gonna let her do what she wanted, and Abraham didn't like that.
@@stormluna5136 not only that when Selena get her star on walk of fame a few years back Abraham got mad Chris got invited! Chris even gave up rights to Selena’s music to the family and Abraham still treating him bad ! The dad has a horrible attitude
@@jjpayne92879 Exactly, making him sign those papers literally just months after her death while he was still grieving and in shock...absolutely despicable
They should have just called this series “AB and Suzzette” because we barely even saw Selena. Plus she was too skinny but I’m sure it hard to find someone with a body as perfect as Selena’s
Well I think is was fair to show A.B and Suzette’s part because Selena y Los Dinos was about them as a whole and how they integrated themselves into the Tejano music market. The lip syncing and the acting was bad. What I felt that they really messed up was the love story between Chris and Selena, their love story was speechless and always made me cry every time I saw them, but in the series it was bland. It was not their true love story.
I think A.B. and Suzette getting more screen time was good. They were a part of Selena y Los Dinos but you never hear about them. I liked that they got shown and not just Selena, I feel bad for A.B. always having to fix his dad’s mistakes and I liked Suzette’s scene with the young girl it was the sweetest scene in the whole show.
I also like that we saw more of AB and Suzette, they deserve credit for all their work but.. I didn’t watch this series for them. Here’s hoping Netflix ups their budget next season (esp the wigs) and give us more of the charismatic Selena.
Yes! I really got the impression on the show especially. She did not seem happy for Selena and Chris at all and then in that scene had the nerve to talk about being so sad she couldn’t be with the guy she liked, totally disregarding how Selena felt. Definitely shady as hell.
Yesss it was terrible! They could have hired any one off RU-vid to slay those wigs. Selena deserved better, so did Chris. The only one who had a decent wig was dude from Los Bad Boys, like wtf?? 🤦🏻♀️
Please do yourself a favor and read the book that her husband Chris Perez wrote “To Selena, with love” and you will get to know sides of her you never knew
I've read the book so many times and I love it. It's honest and shows more sides to Selena than just a smiling singer. They had a really strong relationship, even when it felt like they were going to divorce, and it's a great tribute to her.
I’m just confused how the quality and acting and overall feel just felt so much higher quality in the 1997 movie than this 2020 version! How is it that they went backwards! The casting was horrible imo! The father actor was way off to me! He didn’t act or look anything like Abraham! They almost made them look too wholesome, like a family sitcom or something. The vibe was just really off for me especially in comparison to the movie where it seemed so much more real! I couldn’t get through the series because it was extra extra cheesy to me!
Yes! I didn't know how to describe it but that's exactly it. The way they portray everything is like some corny family sitcom from the 90s. Like Full House or something lol.
@@laurenbray8314 yes I got full house vibes too!! It definitely is hard to believe it’s the story of a real life person especially Selena. I’ve seen interviews of the whole family especially Abraham they don’t act like that!
@@LunaLaVenuslet’s hope it’s a least some what decent. And that means they are going over when selena hit real fame so maybe it can??????? Idk anymore just let’s hope for the best
Selena is a true icon!!! That ending of the movie is a trigger for me because it’s was so well done yet sad! The show is real different for me .... it was meh!
@@kaymaldo i feel like the whole project was rushed, before I deactivated all of my social media there was a hashtag trending about the casting for the role of Selena I saw so many girls who looked just like her and had both singing and dancing chops it sucks they gave this role to someone who just doesn’t fit the role.
I swear they could have given the role to someone who resembled her not only physically, but her charisma & overall personality... still baffles me how they chose this girl.. ZERO charisma & star quality
Binged it, it sucked. Bad writing, editing, direction, production value. The character development is non-existent, it's like a surface level story. Imagine a summary of a story and then just running through the numbers to get it done with loads of random scenes/shots thrown in. Selena deserves better.
omg, I agree. I wanted to know more about Selena than what we already knew. They also needed a stronger actress and dancer who played Selena, as Serratos' performance just wasn't it. I did like the casting for the dad tho. So disappointed in this Series.
They shouldn’t have called it Selena they should called it everyone else but Selena because they hardly even showed her and the father was mostly the main character
I feel the same way, it did not seem like selena was the main character of the series despite her name being the title. I think they should have called it something related to the whole family
Id rate the series 6 out of 10. Jlo really set the bar high with the movie. One thing that really irked me was Selena was a very good dancer on stage...The actress in the series was a bit stiff.
Man yall put JLo on a pedestal as if she was amazing at everything she did especially the Selena movie. Fuck no, JLo sucks in everything she does. She's just a big latina and thats why she's so supported
@amani raye tbh I dont understand why they would agree to this either. The movie was great and left everything on a good note. They should be grieving by the fact that they lost their daughter not a celebrity. It seems as if they're using her death for money, plus out of all of them I feel as if chris went through the most pain and got the most backlash for no reason. Rip Selena 🕊
@amani raye the family or at least her father literally is doing that. It’s obvious he’s greedy. Y’all always question why this why that. It’s the father!
Critics have said the show is more about Abraham and her brother than it was about Selena. The family wants to promote a "Disney" version of Selena rather than humanize her and I will not be watching. Enjoyed this video!
Yes so much is more of Abrahams story and about him also they definitely do more about her brother but it’s always the same issue over and over which is hurry up and write and produce more songs and he’s under so much pressure it was played out and over done
I felt like the relationship with Chris was skimped over, it didn't really show how it progressed. I just read his book so it bothered me. Thank you for saying what we are all thinking.
It has Abraham and his controlling tendencies written all over it. He’s still holding on to the fantasy he wanted Selena to be portrayed as. And he’s still trying to write Chris out of Selena’s history. I can’t stand that man!
Exactly how I feel but I did like how they showed some more back story of Selena like her being in school, how she tried to find her identity as a Mexican-American and her look.
I'm just a bit cynical about people who tie Selena to the movie. No offense, but so many of millennials basically see JLo as Selena, and that's just not really a fan of Selena. It's a fan of the movie.
I’m a fan of Selena always have been since I was a very young child and I don’t see J Lo as Selena yes she played the part as Selena in a movie but that doesn’t make her Selena pretty sure anyone with a brain knows that but I don’t think that means someone isn’t a fan of Selena if they see J Lo in that light especially after the movie i can see how it would be hard not cause she definitely resembled Selena in so many ways in the movie
@@kaymaldo I know what you mean, I just think it's hard for people who have the Selena movie tied to their first experiences of Selena to see anyone else playing her. I think it just doesn't "feel" right. That being said, I finished watching the series today and I'm surprised as to how accurate it is in several details. I share your concern about the production value but really like how much better the storytelling got as the episodes continued. The last episode really was the best one. I did on video on this on what I enjoyed and what I thought was lacking. Really glad they didn't give her story so many fake storylines like the did in the movie (bumper pulled off, etc).
I think maybe an unknown actress could’ve been better as Selena but also felt the storytelling and character development was weak and hindered the whole series for me.
I feel like they just got a recognizable name in Hollywood to use as Selena so it would draw people in. There are plenty of impersonators out there that look like Selena who perform Selena songs for a living and they move just like her. I just feel like it was completely rushed through and they didn’t take the time. The show seemed more focus on her family and not Selena herself. Which is fine, but you can’t call the series Selena and have it be Selena on the front page but then only tell the family story. They did such a poor job on touching on Selena and Chris’s relationship which was so important. It just seems like they were in it for a paycheck and didn’t want to actually tell her story.
The series isnt based solely on Selena but showing the struggles her and her family faced on her path to stardom. Chris was only a small part of her road to fame. No need to include to much on that 🤷🏻♀️
My thoughts exactly! Selena felt like a guest star on her own series named after her! They could’ve gave us something more and her sister is an executive producer who was with Selena every step of the way.
This was not it on all levels. They could of did without this series. It was dull boring, and I couldn't connect to any of the actors. Christian just didn't embody Selena at all. I couldn't get past the 4th episode. I'll pass on the rest of the series.
I’m more mad that they watered her down(meaning whitening her up) she was Mexican she was brown and that’s was part of what made her so gorgeous. Besides the wigs.
From a fully Mexican perspective Selena was considered pretty light skinned. It’s common for us mestizos to vary between skin tones and I experiences something similar where I was more tan as a kid but got a little lighter when I got older (as least in some pictures). By no means am I calling her white but Selena was still seen as light. Id be happy to elaborate more if you’d like! :)
In terms of character they did white-wash her a bit. Christian’s Spanish diction wasn’t too great which wasn’t a huge problem for Selena due to how long and how young she started singing in Spanish.
That's my issue too. I fell in love with Selena through JLo and she wasn't totally light tanned in the movie. I wish they found an actress with a tan toned skin and more of a woman face and figure. I have nothing against the actress, but it just isn't there for me. The entire show wasn't for me at all. Some moments were funny. Honestly, it's not inspiring like the movie.
They really should've called this show "The Quintanillas" or at least "Selena & the Dinos" rather than just Selena... it's like, we're obviously here for Selena but they're trying to tell the whole family's story... But this project was tainted from the start after what happened between Abraham and Chris 🙅🏽♀️ We're forever robbed of what could've been with the potential series based on Chris's book.
I think the family just wanted a series for themselves (but ultimately they knew that the general public wouldn’t be as interested in their stories as they would be in Selena’s) so they came up with this excuse of a series. ANDDD they wanted to run those checks LOOOOOL. I agree that it’s a wonderful thing to keep her legacy alive and to continue to introduce her to each new generation, but it’s so blatantly obvious at this point that they are almost as cash hungry as that witch Yolanda 🙄. Especially considering the fact that her HUSBAND played a significant role in her story, yet he was excluded for the most part 😒 I just wish she had better people around her so that she could still be here today to also enjoy the fruits of her labor
He had all this smoke for Chris but my thing is, why didn't he call the cops on Yolanda as soon as he found out she was embezzling the money? Why did he keep her in the family for so long if he knew she was coo coo?
@@deepmindofx8148 LMAO Gregory Nava is a great director and I just think he really captured family chemistry, love of all kinds, and characterization so much better, also bc he's a Latino. Mi Familia, another of his, is also a really great film. Plus, 20 million dollar budget makes one hell of a difference as well. So no Jlo having a similar banging bod is just a plus, she did her thing 😂.
I really wanted to like this series but damn it’s boring AF and I wish they got a girl who can actually SING Christian’s lip singing is just god awful I’m surprised Netflix allowed that lol
Christian CAN actually sing. She was supposed to sing all the songs herself but she decided against it for respect to Selena. Lip syncing doesn’t define a persons talent 🤷🏻♀️
@@Purplecolors88 y’all keep complaining about that but I mean why is that such a issue? As long as they’re not casting someone who looks COMPLETELY different from Selena I didn’t see a problem with the casting for who played Selena looks wise
Huge selena fan but believe me when I say I haven't watched the series just saw the trailer and can't help but cringed ... gonna have to agree with you on that
Is it crazy how the movie gave us much more and digged deeper in 2 hours while the SHOW gave us nothing. It lacked, it wasn’t fun. And I don’t want to compare the two but I just can’t sorry
Completely agree, I believe it’s missing a lot from Selena, looks and her story in general there’s so much disconnect. We deserve more than this. Selena deserves more.
I feel like you can tell Selena’s family just did this for a check, per usual. There’s no heart in it. Acting is horrible and looks low budget asf. Selena deserved better
I grew up listening to tejano music, and I love Selena. Why am I going to watch someone “be” Selena when I can watch her instead? I think it’s disgusting how people keep making profit off her life and legacy. It’s not cool. We have enough videos to watch her performances. We don’t need to know all their secrets and family issues. Respect for Selena. 🌹
And it's disgusting that there are some people who are still making up rumors about her and her family. Like, daaaamn give this woman a break. She's not even here to defend herself. It's one thing to make up rumors about someone but to make up rumors about someone who's dead, you just a different type of low.
The thing is Chris was not involved in the series which made me mad. If Chris was involved then the love life between Selena and Chris portrayed in the series would not be weak at all. I was disappointed in part 1 it could have been better
You really nailed everything. I was nodding along with you the whole video! No disrespect to the actors, because they did their best, but I felt like the vibe was too wholesome. Selena’s family needs to take a step back on these productions, I think, because they want to rewrite Selena as this angelic sitcom character or Disney princess. Here’s the real tea: Selena was COOL. She performed in a bra, for crying out loud. She had a forbidden romance. Her story is so much grittier than this. So much more drama, emotion than this series allowed for.
Finally, an honest review! I'm a die-hard Selena fan and this was just awful. There were SOME good moments... like, her writing My Love (one of my FAVORITE songs) but knowing that Suzette PRODUCED this trash, just breaks my heart.
I wish they didn’t make this series it’s off. I wish it was more like documentary where the family said their stories about Selena and the experiences preforming with her . And what happened after . You know how it all unfolded with the Kumbia Kings . And how different things were after she left .
Seriously I am on my second episode and I don’t feel like this series is about Selena but of her father. Yes I get it’s about the family but I don’t know. I am not convinced. Btw JLO portrayed Selena better.
Especially for the Actor playing Chris perez's Chris had long curly hair they could at least made the Actor grow his hair put and maybe give him a curly perm
I’d be much more interested in an adaptation of Chris’s book. He showed us a side of her that we’ve never seen before. The imperfect, funny, human side of her. Her family keeps pushing out this carefully curated image and that’s fine, but we’ve seen it a million times. It’s 2020, we’re ready for the real shit.
This series was so disappointing!! I have no problem with the actress it’s just she did not look nothing like Selena!! The Quality was no good at all! And yes the wigs were horrible!!! I’m disappointed on Netflix for the quality of the show they could have done better like they do with there other show they go all out on them!!!
I’m going to watch it today. But the problem is that they chose an actress that people knew already. They should’ve gone with an unknown and people wouldn’t be so critical.
I really don’t think it has anything to do with knowing the actress or not it’s more about the fact that nothing about her represents Selena the actress looks body type mannerisms attitude is nothing like Selena’s so it’s off putting and just doesn’t seem right to use an actress that doesn’t in some way resemble Selena
It’s not that she’s already know because tbh her most prominent role was that of Rosita on The Walking Dead and she was mostly a supporting cast member. It’s the low production quality of the series, the lack of chemistry between the characters, the poor storytelling and Christian’s lack of charisma as Selena. If she and the series had everything else, fans wouldn’t be as critical or as upset. But it doesn’t, so now in addition to all those flaws people are also criticizing the fact that the actress’ dancing is stiff and unfortunately her lack of curves and light skin in comparison to Selena. Also the lip syncing and wigs really were terrible. Like I get 80’s hair was an “experience”but those wigs don’t even look like actual hair.
Honestly I had never heard of her before this series so, for me, me not liking her as Selena is completely based on how she did this role. She just didn’t embody Selena AT ALL!
I agree with what you said that they portrayed this with rose colored glasses. The wigs were horrible. To me it was more to tell the story if the dad, the brother & Suzette. The way they introduced Chris & the relationship is so ugly in the way that they made it seem like oh look at this loser drummer just coming in going after our daughter. There was no capturing the true love they had. Idk it was a no for me.
Yeah I agree the way they portrayed Chris made him seem unimportant to the story. In general I think they did a bad job of introducing the characters and even diving into their stories. The whole thing with Los Bad Boys was interesting to see their addition but then they didn’t even have screen time so it felt like a waste
you put my thoughts into words like I feel like the family wants to keep themselves so much in the spotlight that it just becomes "quintanilla: the series" not about selena anymore. and can we get a version where they actually show just how awful abraham was to chris like how he called him a "cancer to his family". just feels like a series built on rumors and wanting to make themselves more important than Selena tbh but that's how feel about it
I had high expectations for this series. I marathon all 9 episodes, and although there were some parts that did not deliver in my opinion, I was happy to hear Selena's music again. One of the greatest talents of all time. I will still watch part 2.
I saw someone say they should have called it Selena y Los Dinos and I agree. Selena felt like a side character on her own show. The emotional depth was not there at all which the movie really did an amazing job at. I felt totally disconnected from it and I agree this wasn’t a good first impression of Selena and her legacy. Felt really basic and underwhelming. Not even excited about part 2! Bummer.
As a die hard fan for 12 years, I struggled with this series. I appreciated the gaps the series filled in. It was nice to see a more detailed transition into stardom as well as some depth into her family. But it did seem like Abraham and AB's storylines took up more space than needed. Instead of having multiple family meal scenes, how cool would it have been to see more Tejano bands and artists like La Mafia, Shelly Lares, David Lee Garza, people that were longtime friends with Selena? This was an opportunity to not only highlight Selena, but the music she represented. And I wanted to know a little more about her bandmates too. Los Dinos was a badass group of musicians, each of whom brought a distinct style of Tejano that made their music stand out. They were a one of a kind band, but you would never know that from that series. I also think they white washed her identity a bit. Even though she struggled to speak the language, she did appreciate the music and had several favorite Latin American artists - it wasn't all Whitney and Janet. Lastly, I did want them to spend more time developing her relationship with Chris. While he is in several episodes, their scenes seem short and rushed. For those who aren't as familiar with their history, you might be left wondering why exactly Selena was willing to risk her career for Chris because it isn't clear from the series how he stands out in her mind. There needed to be more development on that front, though watching their chemistry was one of the highlights of the series. All of that being said, there were a lot of hidden gems to like, including performances of their earlier songs and showcases of various costumes.
The movie and the series make it seem like Selena couldn’t hold a conversation in Spanish at all which is far from truth. It’s annoying tbh she was very fluent by the last 4 years of her life
i know its bullshit she knew Spanish as a kid growing up she spoke it like your typical chicanos do there is a video of her at the age of 7 singing in Spanish cant post link here
@UThink UCan not buying it sorry you believe that i just dont . Selena grew up around people who spoke Spanish all her life. you know when a person doesn't know jack in the way they sound and Salena speaks like most chicanas do you are not going to convince me. go listen to Salena Gomez speak Spanish she doesn't know jack she didnt grow up around people who spoke Spanish you can tell you cant hide it. if you think Salena never spoke in Spanish as a kid growing up you are delusional .
@@soloM81 she learned Spanish as a child like around the age 7-8 when they first started singing and putting the band together if I remember correctly she always understood Spanish she just couldn’t speak much of it until she was taught as an older child
I am a xennial. I saw her at the Poteet Strawberry festival in 1988. I have conscious memories of this. Christian Serratos and all of those wigs... THAT WAS SELENA!!! Everyone who is a surface fan (i.e. people who only know Selena through the movie - through J.Lo's portrayal of her) was probably expecting something along the lines of the movie. To me this series was raw, it portrayed not just Selena's struggle and story, but that of the family and other artists in the band. If you're a tejano fan, this is probably the first time you've heard the story about Pete Astudillo's breakaway from the group, and how he got his start. This was EXCITING and COOL!!
I'm on episode 2. I already think its utter trash. The cast is awful and the acting... lmao I am not going to even go there. I wish Ryan Murphy did this series instead. At least we know he would have amazing lighting, colors, outfits, GOOD ACTORS.
I watched this series not knowing much about Selena's life story, wanting to know more about her. When I finished watching it, I still felt like I didn't know much about this iconic, talented woman. I watched the biopic and felt like I got to know more about her. I'm glad I watched the biopic and Selena interview/concert clips afterwards because she was truly a wonderful and talented person. I agree with everything you said. They could've totally done more with the series!
I think this series would have been different if Chris would have had control of the project. You can by the reading the first page of his book where he mentions that he will talk about Selena as the woman that he loved, and not as the Entertainer. Meanwhile, the Quintanilla family is very aware of their image among the fans, and I felt they wanted to portray all their hard work and sacrifice. So they wouldn't look like the money hungry people that they are.
I’ll be honest. The thing that made me upset aside from the actress playing her, was the costumes and WIGS. Girllll. Selena’s hair was ALWAYS on point, as was her clothing. She was literally a fashion designer. I’ve seen women here on RU-vid SLAY wigs, to the point they look like real hair. Your telling me they couldn’t get a better hairstylist??? Netflix couldn’t get a better wardrobe stylist?? They had our Selena out there looking busted. It was NOT cute. I appreciated the story line. But the dancing was off, the lip syncing felt forced, the wigs and clothes were not even close to antiquate, and the actress playing Selena did not capture the personality of Selena. The vibrancy, the warmth that she brought. I am disappointed but I’m praying the producers take notes and give us a better Selena come part 2 or we can just throw this whole thing away and start again. 💁♀️
Tbh this series wasn’t really needed tbh. I understand they’re trying to introduce her to a new generation but I know many young people who still love and admire Selena. She’s a legend and her legacy will never die. They should just of stopped with the movie.
I think real Selena fans were satisfied that they didn’t glamorized the series as they did the movie. One thing we got from the movie was “Jennifer Lopez ‘. It wasn’t about Jennifer Lopez or the quality of the wigs or the quality of the production! It was about telling Selenas story and they DELIVERED. They weren’t trying to make a name of Christian serratos, or win an Emmy. You can clearly tell that their main focus was telling her story right. The movie got so many things wrong because that’s what it was, a glamorized movie version of her life. Nothing else. If you weren’t so busy making the wigs or production your main focused, you would have learned so many new details about Selena that you didn’t know. I personally think they did an amazing job telling her story and can’t wait for part 2.
Tragically I’d say her Fans are keeping her music and legacy alive. Her father is just riding the coattails of her success and cashing in on her death. Great review about the series overall!
Fort Worth Texas in the House !! I don’t care what any body says ! I cried and cried and will keep crying the whole show! I’m really enjoying it! The thought to be able to keep our girl Selena alive! The effort as actors to portray our girl Selena ! You go guys ! Keep up the good work !! Long Live Selena !!Be Blessed ✝️and Be Safe🦠😷I give it five stars!!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!! Órale Raza ! Make it a numero uno ! 🌟
I wasn't a Selena fan but no doubt she deserved better all around. She deserved to age well and enjoy her life. I'm glad that she is still getting recognition and still has loyal fans.
The series is just real bad, it doesn't give me Selena vibes. Why didn't they just give us a documentary of her live performances and home videos without interviews. I think Abraham lived through Selena's success, being successful in music was his dream not his kids. It seems to me since Abraham didn't make it and Selena didn't make as far as she could have, he's desperately still trying to make it. He is not satisfied with her legacy as it is.
@@deannamccrimmon7805 I didn't even dislike AB or Suzette but the series made them unlikable. Abraham kept thinking only about how the family would look. He didn't think Chris was good enough for the family.
Wow, my thoughts exactly! They have really went out their way to make sure her legacy never dies. Constantly selling merchandise with her face and name, she has a museum, makeup line, Wax figure, Hollywood star. I mean it’s a lot lol. Not saying Selena didn’t deserve all the recongnition because she did but you hit the nail on the head. The new series is more about him and Selena’s other siblings. It’s like they wanted to tell their stories and they just took the spotlight off Selena.
Phenomenal review. I think you captured how a lot of us felt in a very concise way, so good job!! I agree. The show did NOT capture Selena's personality at ALL, and you're right for the newer generation who wants to learn more about Selena, you do not walk away from the show understanding WHY she was so popular/loved. The show did nothing to convey her magnetism as an artist but also as a person. I remember being deep into ep 3 and being like "wait a minute i still know NOTHING about selena" Why does she feel like a side character in her own show?? Yes, the show definitely played it way too safe and missed out on countless opportunities to explore her deeply interesting life and different themes. So sad!
Awww man this is slightly disappointing! It sounds like that had a large opportunity to explore the experience of crossing cultures but didn't dive too deep. Maaaan! The movie was a good one growing up. I like that you spliced in those examples from your interviews! Great review as always, Kristen! Might be best for people to start with her music and the JLO movie haha
Thanks, Leo! And yeah as much as I wanted to LOVE this, I think Selena's music and even the JLo movie is what I'd stick with. They could've really taken this to the next level, but they just left it so surface level.
In the early years, Selena was not yet an icon and a legend, not until the early 90’s. Selena y Los Dinos were a struggling family band from Texas in the beginning. Selena was destined to be a star, but she and the family put in a lot of hard work before she was discovered by Jose Behar. A lot of years of hard work and struggle went into it for 10 or so years before Selena really had success as a solo artist and became the icon and Tejano Queen that we know today!
The actors did do not look like the family QUITANILLA AT ALL SELENA THE SERIES. THE FRIST MOVIE OF SELENA WITH JLO ALL THE ACTORS LOOK LIKE QUITANILLA FAMILY💓💓💓
They really don’t tho. In the movie no one looks like the family. Aside froma big butt Jlo doesn’t even resemble her at all. Casting wise the show did 100% better
I went in with an open mind and I’m just gonna say it wasn’t the worst thing ever but it definitely wasn’t the best I def think they could have done a better job and had the opportunity get real creative and make it more about what wasn’t shown in the movie
@@kaymaldo just finished binging selena the series part 1 minutes ago. It wasn’t a bad binge but not a great one. This show would’ve benefited from a tighter script, a boost in production (this is Netflix we’re talking about), and maybe some original music. I’ll give credit and kudos to Christian Serratos because she had some big shoes to fill and I think she did a serviceable job. I’m back listening to Selena’s music, this series renewed my interest in the Queen of Tejano music, I want to know more about her and how she influenced and continues to influence people to this day.
The production must have been on a Covid budget...I swear those wigs were purchased at Party City in the Halloween section, after halloween. The story line was ok (it started picking up in Ep 7).... the actors not looking anything like them, and low budget production killed it for me. I'm not saying the actors are bad actors, they just weren't the right actors for those they tried to portray. I kept praying through each episode that Selena's hormones would kick in, and we would see that beautiful hour glass figured woman Selena was. Her contagious smile & laughter was not there at all.
