Self-Care Isn’t Selfish: A Guide for Single Moms of Autistic Kids

I will be the first to admit, I had a very naive understanding of what “self care” really means. I thought because I didn’t have access to child care or money for facials and massages that it was just not going to be a thing for me. But after my therapist pointed me in the right direction, I have a much more healthy understanding of what self care really is. And the cool thing about it is that it looks different for everybody. Taking the time to invest in myself and find ways to fill up my own cup has been a game changer for me.

Hi Kaitlin, I glad you had a breakthrough regarding what self care means for you. I think what's really interesting is also leading up to the point of where you know I've got to do something to take care of myself for me it's being overwhelmed and that's something I have due to complex ptsd. And I know that when I feel overwhelmed and stressful I must, literally must, take sometime to relax and NOT PUSH. Pushing is a trigger for me to get wound up and Stressed. For me it will cause an inability to regulate my emotions. You are a wonderful person and mom. I don't understand this but I have not been getting my notifications of you uploading. So I unsubscribe resubscribe and hit the Bell to all so hopefully I won't miss any more videos because I love your videos. ❤❤

Yes, waking up 20 minutes earlier really makes a huge difference. I like having a little bit of quiet time by myself, before I need to take care about my son

Many times I hear what else could I do for my child. I think there's always something more that we could do. But there's something like "good enough parent", which is way better than "burned out parent"

Another RU-vidr I watch says , “Self care is filling the cup you pour from.” Not only is it true but it makes me feel less guilty about doing some things for myself. In order to be the best mom for my little boy, who is also on the spectrum, I have to be my best self❤❤❤.

I'm really enjoying these last few videos you've posted since you returned from your break! Self-care for me looks like doing something creative - coloring, sewing, playing my harp. On Fridays hubby has off from work so we drop our son off at school and then go for a long trail walk as walking in nature is very calming for me. Then we'll go out to breakfast/lunch together and spend the entire day together before picking up our son after school. That's how we get around the no-babysitter problem. Also, county disability services and respite services may be something that can help you and give you more self-care opportunities. I love that you said church is part of your self-care, and I would also say seeing a therapist is self-care too! And OMG yes special needs Sunday school class! Perhaps you can make friends with some of the other parents in that class and offer to watch each other's kids for a few hours to give each other some respite time! Man, how hard it was to find a church when we moved to Oregon where I felt like people would understand and be flexible with our son. We found a great church but they didn't have a special needs class. I did tell them about our son, and they were understanding and accommodating and he sits in the regular church classes/services now 🥰

That's amazing! I love that you were able to provide that for your son:) And I love all your self care activities. I've been wanting to get into sewing but it seems intimidating. Trails walks are the best!

I have a hard time with this… my son is 18 and I too, have no childcare or anyone to watch him. I do realize that I need to put my mask on first, but in real time, their needs are so great!

I completely understand❤️ maybe just start by trying to find a way to dedicate part of your day to you and make it part of your daily routine so you have something to look forward to. Even if it’s like listening to a 20 minute podcast on your back porch alone with your favorite cup of coffee or something.

@@Kaitlin_and_Kaidale Thank you Kaitlin. I actually get up in the middle of the night (when it’s quiet) and enjoy my coffee then. 😉 We have to make sacrifices right? Also, I work as a full-time Para. My love is with these kids and my son. It truly takes a village!

Great video! I"m not a mom, but the idea of finding self care goes for everyone, cause we all have busy lives with times of stress and burnout. I hope you do a video where you update us on Kaidale's life more about his schooling/therapy. He's a teenager now, how are things changing, and what do you see in his future. Does he have any friends? Is that a future goal, for him to have a buddy to hang out with. I know he hangs out with his cousin. But he's never really had a playdate right, like when you invite a kid over and them do things together. Are you keeping up any of his extracurricular activities? Gymnastics? Sports? Any new activities he might be interested in trying? How about yoga or anything like that? Also am curious why you didn't want him to go public school for middle school? What are some of his academic goals?

Yes that's true, my son's father didn't want to participate in our life anymore, when he couldn't talk with his son at 3 years old. He thought I was hurting him and didn't want to have anything to do with him, as if he was broken toy, not the perfect child he wanted :( But now when my son is doing great, developing great, speaking, reading and writing, he's back in his life. But still, he's not very nice and my son doesn't want to visit him.
