This really makes good sense to me. Very thought provoking as well, especially the part about questioning the systems in place/areas where we might have some power that would be a kind of conflict of interest.

Grateful to hear this, Travis - I agree and stand with you in the common sense that what we are seeing as the world and it's problems are symptoms of a deeper issue... as you say, a systemic problem and it is our responsibility, by virtue of our participation, to change it on any level possible and I think it does start with ourselves. Seeing what systems I am upholding and asking, "is this best for all?" We have a lot of work to do, but I'm grateful to hear it's coming through in many places... this understanding of what's really going on.

Sounds like Systems Theory how you should look at a person and how they interact with what systems they identify with (micro=family, friends etc, macro=cultural norms). Loved hearing about his patient examples. Important theory for social workers.

Thanks for giving this talk Professor Heath. I agree larger issues around systems, structures, policy and all around public health problems are key factors. WE all play a role. More education, acceptance, breaking down barriers including but not limited to stigma of mental health are starting points. This is not just an individual or male issue as you've beautifully stated. These series of unfortunate events have and are leading me not only into therapeutic work but also into the study of public health and epidemiology. Thanks for the work you do as a theripist and being a wonderful educator and human.

Hi, the best you can do to be a good cell in the cultural organism we all live in is to be happy, be yourself. I agree society puts pressure on citizens, however, society does not teach how to be happy, at least because people don't really know they want to be happy, they did not wake up saying : "From now on, I want to be happy" and somehow, that's sad. I understand that Travis Heath critizes the cultural society, however, I think that it is useless to do so if you don't act to change society in the best way possible and surely Travis Heath does so. In two words : great speech

This most-viewed TEDx talk of last week inspires me to think of applying narrative therapy to nationalism-afflicted communities throughout the US and Europe. Though, the difference between perceiving gun violence and the fear of the foreign might be a step too far, requiring perhaps foreigners in the community to join in the process. Any examples of this conciliation? Perhaps in participatory budgeting community deliberations?

Is the speaker saying redefine the system? Or do we have to care for those who get distressed because of the system? I think a lot of our systems cannot be redefined to make it perfect for everybody. That's why we need a community that cares. Ideally, we should all be part of these communities. But somehow by that, we didn't solve the root of the problem and we are in a vicious circle.🙄 Good that there are people talking about this matter. It could provide gateways. Thank you 🙂

@δτ : To be fair, he didn't say the mental health of the individual or of the society. From having read many of his comments over the last month or so, I can be fairly certain Gurudra understands that the mental health of society is to blame to a larger extent. Now I could be wrong, but then many of his previous comments I've read wouldn't make much sense. Regardless, I wish you both peace and prosperity. ^-^

Sometimes self care is not a option.. sometimes no pain is where the best place is. And the world has no answers for it
@barbarabryonwisdom2331
@barbarabryonwisdom2331 5 лет назад
Which suicide is the only option. Why stay? Why? No one is here in person! No one calls ! Family ? No. I can't talk to them. So why not suicide? Why does society as us to engage and give our best, our last dime to what? More kids of relationship? For God? Stay for God? Well I live Him but it seems I can't feel it now. So. If a psychologist wants to pump pills in nevtk get me to measure up to what it wants? Without the one I adore , nothing matters because he is married now. And sure isn't here.. so.. self care doesn't matter because it didn't help in the first place

@@pvonich6202 I figure it like this: I've lived a decent and hard life. I have. I've lost everyone who matters to me. So .. I've helped others, and I just can't stop seeing me do what I keep seeing me do to me. I don't want to live without love. And I pray God forgive me because His love keeps me here. But I can't feel anything now except to see what my mind won't stop replaying. They call this suicidal ideation and usually happens with trauma. Well. I've had that recently.. I pray I get through this .. I know there is light... I just can't feel it

Is it only me who senses a whiff of academic/intellectual dishonesty when listening to this talk as the speaker gives the impression that this is a new fresh and innovative approach that he personally developed yet what he described here is basically the humanist theory approach which dates back to esteemed psychologists and sociologists such as Carl Rogers, Abraham Maslow and Talcott Parsons. All it would have taken is one sentence to accredit these brilliant minds for their input into developing this method of practice. I know that i may be being pedantic but plagiarism even unintentionally is greatly frowned upon in the academic world.
@alecgwin1443
@alecgwin1443 4 года назад
Yup, just you. Dr. Heath clearly isn't stating he's magically come up with some new theory on his own here. This seems like a rather brash response to a **15 minute** lecture.
@markbrae1599
@markbrae1599 4 года назад
@@alecgwin1443 in academia it is generally accepted that you put citations and references in any presentation you give. All he needed to say was one sentence mentioning any one of those psychologists and sociologists and it would have been enough. But I respect your opinion Alec maybe my having a high regard for academic honesty is a bad thing but we will still have to agree to disagree on this matter if you think it is a bad thing 😉

@@markbrae1599 Having followed Dr. Heath for a while, I have zero doubt that he upholds the highest academic standards, and that any material requiring citation has it, just not in the lecture itself. Thanks for the chat!

This is all bull! He really thinks we should all change just because a nut acts like a nut. On the other hand, he fails to recognize what "self" actually is, and it's not based on what society tells you to be. Self describes that you think what YOU think about guns, about masculinity. In fact, it is trying to fit YOU into someone else's mold that causes the trouble, but not being YOU is the problem.

All I know is you are pissed off and it seems to be because you are asked to do something uplifting for the wellbeing of the planet but I think you don’t get that and are reliving a past trauma because you are so far removed from his message
