Nice video with some great ideas! Nice to see you starting the channel. One thing I like to do is put the sawyer mini in line with my bladder. That way I can just refill the bladder and go. I only use only water in the bladder because it's harder to clean well. I use nutrition in the flasks.

Yep I’ve thought of that, but the flow isn’t very fast through the mini sawyer. Plus I need more tailwind and carrying packets doesn’t work great for me, but that is a great idea! I’ve got a great brush I use to clean it out, and the sanitizing solution for home brewing works great too! Thanks for watching!

This is an awesome run-through of what you bring with you on the trail. It's evident you have given good thought to your kit and are well prepared for any foreseeable issues! 👍 I was about to comment that you didn't have a headlamp, but you caught it! 😄

I have one 100K under my belt and made garlic mashed potato burritos for it. I'd love to know your rice and chickpea burrito recipe if you are willing to share.
@UltraTrailSteven
@UltraTrailSteven 4 года назад
It’s really simple. Just cooked white rice, chickpeas cooked in bbq sauce, topped with guacamole and salt. That’s it. Lol but they are really good! Thank you for the support!

A very nice video. Very informative about different gear. However, I did not catch what your "long run" is? 10, 20, 50, more? I don't know what distance a double FKT is.
@UltraTrailSteven
@UltraTrailSteven 4 года назад
Thank you and good points! My long run is 20+. But I’ve done 22 mile long runs 8 out of the last 10 weekends. Often with back to backs. So for me a 20 mile run really isn’t much effort. I’ve used this setup for 30 and 40 mile long runs as well. I am attempting to set the Fastest Known Time (FKT) on the Smoky Challenge Adventure Run double. Which would be 143 miles with 72,000’ of elevation change.

Do you feel like this might be on the heavy side at all? Do you need the bladder if there is plenty of water? Do you need a rain jacket over a cheapo $1 stadium poncho? Sawyer mini + bag needed over water purification tabs/drops? Also I know everyone has their own individual levels of risk, but InReach Mini, FAK or emergency bivy needed when you're that close to civilization? Again, I can understand these specific items based on individual level of risk, but it just seems like a lot.
@UltraTrailSteven
@UltraTrailSteven 3 года назад
Its completely a personal preference, so take what you are comfortable with. The bladder was a yes for me as I sweat a TON and drink a lot of water. Rain jacket in my opinion is an absolute must! I only filtered water once. Doing it again, I probably would leave the filter. You're not really that close to civilization on some of these segments. These are for worst case scenarios like I mention, so if someone was to fall and break an ankle or leg, the bivy could be the difference between life and death depending on time of year and weather. If you want to do the entire SCAR carrying only a handheld water bottle, then that's your choice. Like the video says this is just what "I" carry. Not to say everyone must carry.

I’m planning my longest run in a few months as an unsupported adventure. It will likely take 12-14 hours. I’ll be fine on water (with a filter), but my concern is food. All you take for up to 40m is tailwind, gu’s and some burritos? That seems pretty minimal. Any other ideas?
@UltraTrailSteven
@UltraTrailSteven 3 года назад
What have you been using in training so far? I take gels, tailwind, fig bars, might make a pb&j. That’s about it. I just did a long 50k this past weekend (33 miles). I used gels, tailwind/sword, 2 small bags of potato chips, an orange, and a popsicle. This was a race though so I wasn’t carrying everything.
@ScottRunsnStuff
@ScottRunsnStuff 3 года назад
@@UltraTrailSteven I use gels, fig bars and nuun. The longest solo stuff I’ve done is a few marathons (4-5 hours) so I haven’t needed to carry hardly any real food and rely on aid stations and drop bags for the longer stuff. It’s more a concern on how to carry it all and picking things that are easy to pack
@UltraTrailSteven
@UltraTrailSteven 3 года назад
@@ScottRunsnStuff well burritos are easy cause you can wrap them in foil. Pb&j are also pretty easy. My wife puts boiled potatoes in a bag too.
