SELLING MY BIKES to The Pros Closet... This is what they Offered

Well, that didn't go as expected. Trying to sell 4 bikes to The Pros Closet only resulted in 1 of 4 bikes getting sold to TPC. Their customer service chat was amazing, helping me get an even better deal on my Stumpjumper and once I did sell my S-Works Stumpjumper to The Pros Closet the process was super smooth and paid out quickly. I'll certainly be using them in the future to get the market price and possibly trade-in a bike as well.

Didn’t trade in a bike with them, but bought a rear shock from them and actually spoke with someone that was both helpful and knowledgeable. Seem like a decent company!

I sold a road bike to them this summer and had a great experience. The funny part was I had it on Facebook too, and in an effort to be transparent, I said in the listing that I was selling to Pros Closet in X days if I couldn’t sell it local. Obviously that was my preference so I wouldn’t have to pack it up and everything. The EXPERTS on Facebook let me have it about how that was a weird flex to say and how I was a jerk for trying to sell it for way more than I could get from them since their offer would be terrible. I eventually posted a screenshot of the offer and they all stopped commenting. I made more from Pros Closet in that instance, but sometimes it might be worth it to take a little less to not deal with all the idiots online?

It looks like a cool service. The "store credit" or "trade-in at a participating dealer" tells me they have some type of deal worked out with certain shops to get discounts on the bike you buy. And of course, if it's store credit, then they've already made their made their money. Pretty slick operation, I think. Everybody wins.

Thanks for showing what it's like on the selling side. I bought a new rear road wheel from them last year for a pretty great deal. They were really helpful and had great customer service. I'm also really interested what they sold the bike for. All my stuff is too old to sell with them, and their sale bikes all seem to be very high end, and thus very expensive. It's really hard to find a good deal on a decent used MTB bike.
@Jamesthebikeguy

Happy to share your experience, and thanks for sharing yours on buying a wheel. Yeah, I got tired of waiting to see if I could find the bike listed. I've got to guess it went w/o me noticing or they updated the part spec. Someone is riding a fun bike!

Really appreciate you covering this. I was skeptical too, to the point that I wasn’t going to even explore their offers - but based off your vid I went ahead and sent them pics of my for-sale bike - and I was really surprised by the strength of their offers. I’ve noticed on their site that they ask full retail for a number of their newer-but-used bikes, sometimes even above retail. I don’t know if they’re actually selling them for those numbers … but they must be, right?
@DaveCM

I've looked at their bikes for years. I've noticed their prices have went way up during Covid. I am guessing that they are taking the opportunity to make some extra profit. Bikes are still hard to come by and so the law of supply and demand rules.

Thanks for this. I think the Pro's Closet is a great way for some people to unload a newer bike that is in good condition. I tested them out last year when trying to sell my 2020 Niner RIP 9 RDO 4 star build with updated i9 wheelset and DHX2 coil . It was a $6600 build when new + extras. Bike had no damage or marks on it and was well maintained and super clean. However their offer was lower than I expected. Around $4000, $1200 less than what I sold it for locally. It did take me a couple weeks to sell, but $1200 is a pretty big difference and goes a long way to getting a better kit on my next bike.

I bought a blemish bike at a great price from a local dealer with a 2mm paint chip. Otherwise perfect brand new condition. Was a $5.5k build. Hadn’t even been ridden. Submitted it to TPC just out of curiosity. They offered $3000 credit or $2600 cash. 👎🏾

Found out that they won't take bikes that are repainted, as it can make it harder to verify serial numbers if they're buried under aftermarket paint. I guess it's all in relation to dealing with stolen bikes and such and proving prior ownership.

@Jamesthebikeguy
@Jamesthebikeguy 2 года назад
I bet I will, will report back if that's the case. Even if you do, my understanding is that you can write that down by creating a schedule for the amount you got paid vs. the original price you paid for your bike. Being that it's unlikely that you will get more than you paid originally it wouldn't be taxable. Of course that requires a little extra work as well as a copy of your original receipt but whatever you do consult a tax professional and don't listen to me. Second, I don't see a list on their website, but asking at my LBS they do participate the Pro's closet partnership and I suspect most would.

Pro you get a really nice bike, one that puts a smile on your face like nothing else. Con you're out a lot of money. Don't think too much into it, if you're having fun on a less expensive bike then awesome. If you want to step up to the next level it cost a few dollars but you will always be happy you spent them.

@@Jamesthebikeguy Thanks for the prompt response... For decades, I have put thousands of miles on box store bikes... High end tires were a game changer from flats every ride and doubling up on the inside of tires. I rode a friends half broken stump jumper and was blown away by the hydraulic disk brakes. ( Almost over the handle bars)... What is the best place to buy high end "obsolete" bike components? ... Even worn out or broken. I usually feel right buying things at 80-90% off. I am looking for something like the Pros Curbside Trash. 🗑️. Or the (Pros Best Friend who works at the restaurant and sometimes hooks him up with yummy food.) A downhill mountain bike would probably be up my alley. If I could find the repair parts for my Vertical NEXT full suspension bike from 1999, I would probably still be on it. Thanks again.

I'm surprised they offered you under $1K for those two bikes, as I don't see a lot bikes for sale on that site for under $3K. Maybe that was just earlier in COVID when stuff was REALLY scarce, as I see that they at least have 2 MTBs under $2K right now. Maybe they are parting them out???

Heard nothing but horror stories about them! Did a few test look ups myself (during the pandemic last year when bikes were impossible to find!!) on my 2019 Cannondale Synapse SE Carbon Ultegra. In mint shape. They offered me $800 yet had other used ones listed for full retail price $3,600!! Does that sound fair?? Plus I heard nothing but horror stories from people buying used bikes that were scratched/dented and no where near described condition. Maybe its different regions or resellers. Did you tell them you were a RU-vidr with followeres and would do a review before dealing with them? Like everything else folks, do a Google review look up on the company using the word REVIEW at the end. It will give you a very good idea about the company.

Firstly NO I am not pompous enough to contact TPC and ask them to do anything special. They don't know my channel, or anything aside from the normal process, (A channel as small as mine is virtually inconsequential) Coming from working for a company that did vehicle trades, they would often use price as a controller of supply. I.e. they had to many of one model, then they would reduce the trade values. To few of a vehicle they would increase trade values. So if when you looked TPC had a bunch of similar bikes maybe they weren't wanting yours? Or values are adjusted based on time and difficulty selling the bike? All I know is 1 of 4 of my bikes were a better deal to trade instead of sell my own. So 25% chance in my small experiment. Getting a quote is a "free" service so why not use it as a benchmark. I know I do when I go to sell my car. I always get a quote from Carvana to know what my base price should be. Then it's up to you to decide what is "fair".

The irony is that nearly all frames are made in Asian factories. Don't understand the stigma attached with a Chinese manufacturers. That bike looks pretty capable with nice components.
@Jamesthebikeguy
@Jamesthebikeguy 2 года назад
There is no irony regarding where the bike is. The stigma (well earned) is due to the lack of QC and post sale support. Sure brand XYZ has their bike made overseas, but most of them have QC staff living and working in the country. Then when it gets to the end user there is a company to spare parts, warranty the product, and most of all care that their name doesn't get tarnished. Country of origin does not always indicate quality. But lack of responsibility certainty does. I'd much prefer to pay a few dollars more to get a bike from a company who knows they are responsible for the rider's safety.

@@Jamesthebikeguy Man, I have ridden Specialized bikes since they welded their own frames here. I understand, but an aluminum frame is an aluminum frame. That's a 40% margin without expenses. I got to imagine w/ all the shipping costs, clean-up ect, photos, & overhead would add about $300 to the cost. That leaves them with a 34% margin and that's totally normal. Business have to make money, otherwise they are no longer in business.

Pros Closet low balls big time. I’ve priced two bikes with them. They had one similar to mine, one year older, and in worse condition, for sale on their site for over 40% more than what they offered me for mine. I sold it on pink bike for 30% more than what they offered. This is the second time trying to sell them a bike and will never look to them again as a potential buyer.
@Jamesthebikeguy
@Jamesthebikeguy 2 года назад
To be fair they do have to sell the bike for more than what they paid for it. And depending on the price of the bike 40% is a fairly reasonable difference. Of course you will often be able to sell your bike for more individually, but thats not really what they are offering. Its a easy, clean & fast way to sell a bike. Not to maximize the amount you get. Just like in this video only 1 of the 4 got sold to TPC as the others I thought I could do better on my own.

So I’m back to say they are absolutely lowballing me. I have spotless 2021 epic evo expert with less than 40 mi and their offer was absolutely disrespectful lol. The store credit was almost 2k less than what I can gather anywhere else. Then for fun, I submitted just the frame and I just laughed. So 60% less than the current value in cash for the whole bike and about 35% of the frame value. So then I went to look at their pricing on bikes. Interesting how all of a sudden they know the value of bikes! A 2019 Stumpjumper with a LOT of visible blemishes with a fox 36 elite fork and coil is 6599!!!! Go look for yourselves. I wouldn’t buy an accessory from there even if nobody else had one. I spoke to someone on pink bike that said he got 3200 for a 2018 Scott spark in cash lol. My offer was 3600. That’s the last time I will even give them a hit to their site. Garbage. Lol So if anyone is looking for a specialized epic evo expert, (xl) hit me up! I’m not trying to get over on price like everyone else. Just need to get into a bigger travel bike.

You do know they can't buy your used bike for the same price as a new bike, right? You also understand that you can sell your bike yourself for more than you'll get a trade in price, right? It's unreasonable to believe that a company that makes money on buying a bike at a low price but easy, and then sells for a high price but easy. Will do anything but give you a lower price than you could otherwise get, but you don't have to do any work.

Time = Money so it depends what it is worth to you. Clearly in my video 1of4 got sold to them, i.e. 25% of the bikes I felt like was a better idea to sell to them instead of sell on my own. Infact as I described I tried for a week to sell the bike at their offer and didn't even get a single low-ball. I did however get offers on the other bikes and sold them locally. Considering its free to submit, and you got to take pictures anyways to sell your bike, why not use it to get a base price? That's my opinion at least.

Its another of those companies where when you the customer is selling something its unimpressive and worth very little, but when they're selling the same exact thing its like solid gold with diamonds. The current scarcity market and their exposure via advertising allows them to get away with it.
@Jamesthebikeguy
@Jamesthebikeguy 2 года назад
Businesses charge money for their service. They charge the seller by making it quick and easy and thus provide a low price. They then charge the buyer by providing a clean bike, with minimal risk, and lots of selection and they increase the price because of it. Those two services equal a business. Sure you can get more selling on your own. Sure you can get a better deal finding it on your own. But neither of those are as easy and hassle free. That's what your paying for and if that doesn't feel like a good deal than your better off doing the work yourself.

Man, there must be a lot of schmucks out there (or people who are either desperate for $ or just want to cut their bikes loose, no matter what) because 99% of The Pro's Closet's bikes are considerably overpriced. That, I'm sure, is why they are able/willing to pay up when they buy a bike from the owner/seller. I have found them to be consistently at least 20% higher than realistic market values.

Or a lot of people interested in the safety and security of purchasing a known quantity. The ability to return or exchange if you don't like the bike. And no chance of a weirdo showing up or a deadbeat leaving you waiting in a parking lot. For all that, a slight price premium is well justified.

My experience with them has been hit or miss. They bought a road frame from me for a decent deal, however, they low balled me so bad on my mountain bike that I won’t give them a second chance. 2021 Kona process x with 2 rides on it, fox x2 factory (new), fox 38 factory (new), TRP DHR evo brakes, oneup carbon bar, i9 stem, oneup dropper, loam lever, full 12 speed xt drivetrain, absolute black oval chainring, dmr vault v2 pedals, Stan’s flow ex3 rims laced to i9 hydra hubs, maxxis assegei tires.
