On July 17, 2024, the JICA Ogata Research Institute convened the seminar
“Frontiers of Health Policy and Systems Research (HPSR)”.
2024 will be a pivotal year for Japan to promote health policy and systems
research with global scope, as JICA and Nagasaki University are hosting the 8th
Global Symposium on Health Systems Research (HSR2024) in Nagasaki, Japan, in
cooperation with other collaborators in Japan and the Health Systems Global
(HSG) in November.
The Government of Japan (GoJ) has demonstrated significantleadership role in
setting the global health agendas in recent years through various diplomatic
channels. One of the prominent examples was G7 Hiroshima in 2023 with its
leaders’ communique highlighting their commitment to universal health coverage
(UHC), pandemic prevention, preparedness and response (PPR), and increase
application of innovation, in line with the Japan’s Global Health Strategy
announced in 2022.
Despite Japan’s active political and diplomatic role in influencing and leading
global health agendas, academic and analytical contribution from Japan in global
health has a room to develop, especially in the growing field of health policy
and systems research (HPSR). HPSR with global scope, with particular focus on
the challenges faced by low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), is expected to
be further strengthened. This webinar will provide an opportunity to reflect on
the promotion of HSPR efforts by the Japanese research community together with
global and local HSPR experts.
