Fantastic vid! Thanks for the comparison. You're the only video I could find comparing these two mics so thanks for making this.

Hey Joseph, It was a pleasure, I'm glad you found it useful. Which mic did you end up going with? Thanks for watching, All the best. - Stefan

@@decibelpeak I grabbed a couple tentacle lavs along with the Track Es. Truly, it was hard to hear a significant enough difference between the two mics to justify an almost 50% price increase. I work in weddings, so I may eventually upgrade to the MKE-2s just for the form factor, but as far as audio quality goes, I have 0 complaints with the Tentacles.

What type of adapter do I need to plug ME2 directly into camera?

Hey! You’d actually need to cut off the jack and solder on a new one (one without the locking trs). Also, I wouldn’t recommend connecting this mic directly to a camera. But, changing the jack would make it possible. - Stefan

Been taking some time to figure out what best to use for my (echo ridden and often changing) room where I'm planning to record talking head videos. Been lured into the shotgun mic territory, however, I just keep getting turned off by the echo that seems to come along with 1. untreated rooms and 2. if not talking directly into them (the whole point of hanging it outside the frame). Lav mics have turned me off due to sound quality in many samples I've heard. However, there seem to be a different league of lavs that actually perform rather well. Been considering the Sennheiser ME-2 as well, but also the Deity W.Lav Pro. Very curious to hear if you have some initial thoughts on those already give your plans to acquire one. If I can also ask your thoughts on this setup for a basic (echo-y) talking head studio: - Proper lav mic - 3.5 mm extension cable - Y-splitter (to use with IEM for video calls if needed) - Into Macbook/iPhone (used in conjunction with the Continuity camera feature)

Hey Roderick, It's true that using a shotgun mic (even at the optimal height of max 1ft from the sound source) will give you echo in an untreated room. The only way to mitigate this in post is to use a de-reverb plugin. As for lav mics, you can get better results if you conceal them under the clothes (like they do on film sets) because the clothes will absorb and reject some of the reflections. The deity w.lav pro is a great option! You can also consider the Sanken COS-11D or DPA mics if you have ore budget. However, if you can combine both the lav and a shotgun mic, you'll get the best results! I hope that helps, let me know if you have more questions! - Stefan

@@decibelpeak thanks a bunch for your thorough reply. After sending back a bunch of equipment like shotgun mics and pencil condensors, I’m now testing a Rode Lav 2 + Rode AI micro setup. To be honest, I’m positively surprised at the quality. Especially in my untreated room. Combining with some OBS and/or post editing makes it completely workable for talking head and it is signed off as ‘professional sound’ by anyone I’ve asked so far. Edit: pencil condensor (AKG P170) combined with a audio interface (Vocaster or Volt1) worked quite well. However, all the extra equipment, cables and booms just didn’t work for me in my room as I’m moving a lot lately. Also, the sounds quality difference isn’t shocking when compared to the lavalier setup (some plusses are crossed off by some minuses in my opinion)
