Hear me out: There was never any tension build-up because the ship always missed every shot which didn't really give any emotional connection to him running. If he got shot which paralyzed or hurt him and the enemy ship was really close to killing him then the escape would have a far better payoff. If the weapon was found near the skeleton/dead body of a former victim with like the number 000 on his bone/skin the end scene would also have a better build up. Otherwise great visuals especially the ship and effects. The cinematography and lighting were fantastic. Sound design was 👌. Anyways I hope you guys give some feedback to this comment.

my 2cents on the numbers: Situation is somehow like Hunger Games, the difference is that the subjects have to survive a certain time. Had the same thought as you at first. Time running out would be just like "In Time".
@savonlofton
@savonlofton 6 лет назад
Okay how would he have escaped if he would have been paralyzed? Leaving it to a simple blaster injury where he's bleeding out is fine, paralyzing him wouldn't allow him to escape and this short would've been a lot shorter. Everything else I can agree with just saying paralyzing wouldn't be a good idea.

Had the exact feeling about it. Also, one of the edit points after the character procuring the gun really cut the thrill of the scene. That cut was at 3:21

Knowing what they're capable of and seeing that they managed to pull this off only seems to me that tightening it down a bit was in fact plausible. I guess this is one of those things which you won't know until it is fully finished and till you get some initial reviews.

My favorite thing about this short is how you made us feel concern for Justin. Since we're used to his comedic and neat-constant injury and death, that's a significant accomplishment for actor and director. Great work all around. Someone else speculated this might be the same world as "PROXiMITY." I'm inclined to agree. It would work.

This was a fun 5 minute diversion. Not to disparage the guys that think story is supreme -- it is! -- but, sometimes I want to watch something that is short and sweet. This was just as satisfying as a bag of salty potato chips, not very nutritious but still very tasty! So what if the sentinel was the worst shot in history, maybe it was programmed to tease the quarry a little bit before shoving the BIG gun up his a**! Who cares if the count down timer was superfluous? It added a bit of backstory intentionally left incomplete and presupposes that there's more to come. I don't care that the guy found the weapons so quickly, he's got a gadget that provides that information. He's in a life and death situation -- he survived! That's all that counts!

Really good work, I've always found your projects pretty fucking well achieved in a cinematographic point of view. You learned and inspired me so much since more than 4 years now! And I am myself making short movies today. Even though being entertained by your fictions, I have never really found an enough-captivating story in you films, which is absolutely not to worry about, and this is of course under an absolute personal point of view. I am not going to say that you have brought this passion of mine for filmmaking into my life, but you have definitely learned me so much about what I really, really wanted and needed to know about making movies, and I must admit: it gave me hope. Andrew Kramer has been quiet the same teacher and inspirer for me into the VFX domain, and watching a Film-Riot/Video Copilot production is just AMAZING! I hope, I really hope that one day you will see MY big project, which is a short-movie, that I care and prepare for almost 3 years now, simply because I remember me developing my first bigger projects while learning from Film-Riot, and at the time it felt like such an excellence and privilege to have kind of your lessons at my disposition. I am developing my filmmaking skills by doing films, and here is my 3rd short-film ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BlG7yOB2hLg.html ), completed 2 months ago, a sci-fi story (SENTiNEL made me thought of it) that I define as my bigger(completed)-project of my life. I am an amateur and I make a lot of mistakes (that’s why it’s so good), and I don’t have a good English, which is not my birth-language, so forgive me if I cannot be well understood. I want to thank you, and go watch my short-film if this message has developed an interesting thought about me, or if you are simply curious to see what a 18 years old boy like me with a camera, a micro and some friends can do for putting his imagination to the screen! In all sincerity - Diogo Consolado

Well, this was a cool short. But, I know I don’t have the skills or the years of practice that you guys have, I want to make a critic. Ryan, I am a huge fan of film riot a long time, but looks like after “Epic Summer” (a long time ago btw), your shorts are just that: something or someone chasing someone. After ES, the best short you made was with the osmo gimble. Feel like your shorts are becoming routine, that it is just to show what you can do. Don’t have film riot face anymore. I love the show, every thing you teach us (thank you very much), but your shorts seens some kind of obligation, is mandatory you made 1 short at least, and it isn’t. Take for example TELL. It was the best short you made until today. How long it took? 4 years? But man, that had context, a background history, something to hang on. I am not saying you are doing a bad job. I just saying you are losing the “Disney magic” kkkk, you touch are missing. Please, come back with the good and film riot style short film. Thank you for everything you done for us, all the lessons and God bless you all!

Is the sentinel's secondary weapons not properly calibrated? Sentinel tracks target perfectly, however missed 8 shots at a target running mostly a straight line. All shot are rather high 50 degrees angle. Interestingly, sentinel flew not faster than a running man.

AMAZING! Being a filmmaker/editor myself, I know this is really, really difficult to pull off, and you did it fantastically. Just explain to me - what is the tie-in between this, Ballistic, and Sentinel? There is one, but I can't get fully invested if I don't know the story fully. I know that's the point, and that we're supposed to be left asking questions as the audience, but you leave to many questions. Only leave a few, not a dozen. Please explain!

I think the point was to leave the viewer confused. Plus, from what Ryan said in previous videos, they only had 2 days to shoot this, 3 hours each. For what it's worth, and the time acquired to do it, I think it was done really well.

@thedifferent14
@thedifferent14 6 лет назад
Ryan is plunging us into the middle of the action. Also, what he has shown us isn't a self contained story; its more like a moment in time and IMO what we saw was the beginning of a larger story. We may not know why the ship and him are enemies but they clearly are, hence the hostility. And due to the time clock on the guy's arm we know he's limited time to complete whatever mission he came to do. His landing in the beginning may have been roughly executed, probably due to being pursued by the ship, but arriving where he did was no accident. He was prepared with tools ready to help him get the ship off his trail. That's what I gleaned from it anyway.

FX were nice though the "story" didn't make sense. So the machine with tracking and a laser is unable to hit it's target running in a straight line stays still while the much slower target aims at it and destroys it.

I like this. I like this a lot. I was getting a bit tired of your short films always having that cheap "funny lulz xD" twist to them. This is much better and actually engrossed me into that world and what the heck was going down. Also what lens did you use to get that swirly bokeh? I don't imagine it was one of those CCTV lenses or a Helios lol
@xWood4000

The Dead Immortal I didn't even notice that bokeh.

Almost definitely the SLR Magic 1.33x anamorphics. Not sure what model but probably the PL mount ones.

Great video as always! Of course everyone is going to make the argument that the writing is bland and shallow, but I don't think it was Ryan's intention for it to be otherwise. I think it's very well made, from a technical perspective, and leaves us wondering what the further universe is like.

Yes. People are always out to say the story is not great or the character wasn't developed but at the end of the day, the movies and tv shows that entertain us have some of the worst storytelling in all of hollywood.

Story was very average. expected a better ending that makes people think or something. You guys are best in CGI and VFX but lack of good and strong script makes every tough VFX thing kind of not worth the time.

Great VFX, really well made. No story. Also those lens. For me, they look very bad. The ones you shot Ghost House - those were amazing, Kowas if I remember.

As cool as it would be... probably not. Justin (the main character in this) played in Proximity and died I think.

Yes...but...why? Whats the point of this? Whats the message you want to convey? You have the resources filmriot...use them wisely...produce meaningful shorts...

Thank you for this so much. It's a bit shocking to see them doing so little meaningful in that way! It disgusts me when people say they are "writing" a short only to produce something rushedly written - where's the substance!!!

Whoever made this: great job on CGI. Holy cow though, you don't know much history do you? In the late 1960's my dad worked at General Dynamics. He didn't work on the mini-gun that went into the Cobra helicopter but he knew guys who did. They had a field about the size of a football field. They fenced it off. So we're talking an open field 100 yds by 50 yds wide. They'd turn a rabbit loose in the field and he could run anywhere he wanted. They make one pass with the Cobra, coming in an 100 mph. It would blaze away with that mini-gun, with a 3 degree sweep. One pass. Kill the rabbit every time. That was back in the 1960's. Your Sentinel can't duplicate that 50 years later? How did it miss the human when he was running in the open field?!?
