One thing I tend to notice about your videos is that you really do a good job at being respectful when representing other people's cultures. That isn't always the easiest thing to pull off, so it shows that you both are mindful and I'm assuming quite intentional with the manner in which you create these great videos! Carry on! Love from Austin!

@GabrielTravelerVideos
@GabrielTravelerVideos 7 лет назад
It depends a lot on which country you go to. Thailand is cheap, Japan isn't. Not sure about Korea but I would guess it isn't particularly cheap, especially in Seoul. The Vagabrothers need to make some videos showing how much things cost, that's always interesting and super useful info.
@AudroneStorm
@AudroneStorm 7 лет назад
I wouldn't say that Seoul is very expensive. Transportation is really cheap and very good. Food isn't very expensive and portions are big (at least to how much I normally eat). Attractions (e.g. palaces) are not expensive at all but you might need to buy tickets in advance because in some places access is limited. Accommodation is really affordable especially if you are staying in Airbnb or hostel. Probably the most expensive would be flights.

Seoul and the whole country of S. Korea are both awesome! Im glad you're showing people how amazing and overlooked it is by alot of western foreigners. I lived in a countryside province teaching english for a year. I am stoked to watch your Korea series! love all the videos though, no matter the destination! Y'all probably have left korea already, but for anybody else who might read this and is planning a trip, a templestay (you live with buddhist monks for a few days) was one of the most amazing cultural experiences we had wile we were there.

Tiggerrrun 1020 how did you guys plan the trip? I kinda love to do that. Understanding and learning other cultures are the best!
@Tiggerrrun
@Tiggerrrun 7 лет назад
Google 'templestay Korea' or go to eng.templestay.com. That's the official english templestay website for South Korea where you can see all the different temples to choose from, where they are located, what's included in the templestay, dates, registration forms, etc. We did a weekend at Guemsansa because it was close-ish to our house and had a special emphasis on introducing foreigners/tourists to Korean Buddhism. We went in April when the cherry blossoms were blooming and it was beautiful, but there are so many temples and different programs to choose from! Besides being an amazing cultural experience, one of the best parts is that most templestays cost the same as hotels! Good luck!

The sculptor is showing kids playing game. Korean kids are playing that. We play divided 2 teams & decide which team will ride on another team's back by rock scissors papers. The winning team ride on other team, and lost team should stand not to fall down. Then the kid riding at first does rock scissors papers again with the kid standing.. & if he wins, they change poses but if he loses, his team should make "horse" pose again Hope this is helpful for you to understand ;)

The kid centipedes as you called them is a replica of a korean childhood game similar to "horse game" American kids play. Kids link together and opposition team must jump on the back of the kids linked together and try to break or collapse the link.

Love seeing you guys out of your element. And I gotta say that watching the changing of the guard ceremony made me tear up a little bit. Seeing the artistry of the costumes and how they honor their past - it's so human and I love it so much. Even though I know very little about Korean culture, it made me feel connected to humanity in a way I've so been craving but have struggled with lately due to difficult family relationships that leave me feeling empty and isolated. You guys are awesome - thanks for reminding me of the beauty that exists in the world and how much I fucking love travel.

About the strange sculpture you saw in the middle of this video, it is Korean traditional game called "Hammering Horse Posts (말뚝 박기)." You make two teams and one of the teams get defense side, which you called "human centiped", and the other team runs all the way and jump on the back of defense team. When the defense team fails to withstand the attackers win, and after all the attacks, the first person of each team play rock scissors paper and that makes next round's attack & defense team. This is short description of this game, and I think the sculpture takes after the game. It is not a horrifying human centipede in front of the old palaces of Korea. ;) thank you for making this gorgeous video about my country!

Hey Vaga brothers, the spot where a family took pictures mounting on the backs of kids statue at 5:02 is to show one of the plays that Korean kids (usually boys, maybe until 1980s)did around the neighborhood. I still remember that I was looking for my younger brother for dinner and found him playing the game with his friends in a corner of streets.

Love that old city wall! Here in the U.S. you just don't get as much of a sense of history, so I always love seeing old architecture when abroad. Also, I wasn't expecting to see so many girls in hanbok, I had no idea it was trendy in Korea to rent them and wear them out and about. My stepdad's family only breaks out the traditional wear for family photos, weddings, and 100th day celebrations (celebrating a baby's 100th day is traditionally very important in Korean culture, as it means that the baby is likely to live into adulthood if they make it through those first few months. Infant mortality rates were no joke!).

Do you have any backpack recommendations for a carry-on sized bag, if you plan to travel with only that bag?

That "Human centipede" sculpture ls portraying kids playing a game. Human Centipede is the sickest movie made by the way.

That weird human centipede sculpture is actually a depiction of a fun little Korean street game - usually played by boys. Players get into that human centipede position. Once they have, other players will try to dash and jump on top of them, like how the locals were taking a picture with the statue.
