My massive empties videos from the first 2/3 of the no-buy year have transformed into still-exciting but very reasonable empties videos! It’s mostly skincare because I’m a skincare junkie and I go through a lot of high-end skincare, but I have makeup empties, and haircare empties too this month!

I love when makeup makes it into the empty videos! It’s so satisfying to use up makeup because it does take so much longer than skincare. Great video! As always, I love your thorough reviews and the way you talk about products.

I couldn’t sleep tonight and I was so glad to have an HLP video to watch! I have three different deluxe samples of illuminating moisturizers, and I love them. I have the exact same feelings as you though about it. It just doesn’t “fit”. I can’t use primer with it, and it also disrupts my use of SPF. So its a no go for me. I also used up a toothpaste this month. AND I learned that a deodorant lasts me 8 weeks, so I don’t need 3-4 back ups. I also have a deluxe sample of Benefit Porefessional and I am NOT a fan. When you take an alligator out of the swamp she gets dry skin, like myself, and the Porefessional does me NO favors in that area. I am so unbelievably excited to see your hair video. When I finally finish my last 3 hair products I want to try the curly girl method. I think that it will do my wavy hair a world of good. Have you heard of this method? I am also trying reusable makeup “pads” after my cotton balls are done. (Yes, cotton balls. I tried to go cheap and I GREATLY regret it.) You should totally make washable cotton rounds and sell them on Etsy. Side hustle girl! Side hustle!- Sorry for the rambling train of thought in this paragraph, insomnia is a hell of a thing. On a personal note, your last video inspired me to start writing again for the first time in 5-6 years. A bad young marriage followed by a few years of fining myself moved me away from one of my true loves. I’ve spent a minimum of ten minutes writing every day for a few days now. I know its not much, but I’m very excited to have started wearing those grooves in my brain again. I’m hoping to rebuild this habit to get my spirit up a little.
@HannahLouisePoston
@HannahLouisePoston 6 лет назад
Cecile, ten minutes a day is EVERYTHING! That is fantastic! Congratulations. It's so hard to start writing again, but you are already through to the other side. Your life is changing, I love it! As you go on, my recommendation is to read what you want to write. If it's essays, read the best essays. Poems, read the best poets. Etc. I just uploaded all of the hair footage onto my computer and it's massive :) I think I might have to split it into two videos. If you have wavy/curly hair it will be great for you. I've heard of the curly girl method, some of my friends have had great success with it!

Haha, The Lash Princess is in fact spectacular 😝 It smudges under the eyes like no other does 😃 Ambre 114! I love that scent 😍 I have a feeling that you have such a good taste in perfumes. Maybe someday you could show us your collection and tell more about your perfume history, favourite notes or types of scents. I was so into perfume, much much more than into makeup. Now I'm out of my internet theme forum (because I had very bad spending habits and need to chill) but I still love perfume and enjoy what I have doing a sort of "project pan" 😀

I started using reusable cotton pads this summer. Bought mine from Etsy - Maggie at Curious Sparkles recommended them. I like them, but...1. You have to wash and dry them in a load without fabric softener, 2. They’re stained, even after washing, from taking eye makeup off, 3. I find if I’m not careful, that I use more toner, micellar water, etc. because it take a few extra seconds for the liquid to absorb into the fabric, 4. I only bought 10, and use them up every 3 days, so I’m still using cotton pads until I do another non fabric softener load of laundry. I want to do exactly what you’re suggesting and make some of my own. Still think it’s a great alternative from buying the ULTA Premium Pillow pads (which I will always buy to remove nail polish...they’re the best!).
@HannahLouisePoston
@HannahLouisePoston 6 лет назад
so far I'm loving mine. But all of what you say is true! it's more labor. But I like how big they are and how I can use the front of one and then use the back of it later (if Im using it for micellar water both times, which is 99% of what I use them for.)

I panned 7 shades from my all I see is magic colorpop pallette. I started this year April. I finished almost two shades. I am happy with the progress and I am taking a break. I am enjoying the light eyeshadow (HM single shadow. It's is a dirty milk shimmery color). I also hit pan on my essence blush. (I have been using it ever since June this year.) I am becoming conscientious about my relationship with makeup. For the most part, heavy makeup don't look at on me. There is need to rush through what I already have!
@HannahLouisePoston

Wow, seven??!? That's amazing! And a blush? Good work. I'm right there with you with heavy makeup, it doesn't look good, especially in person (except for eye makeup in my case. I'm all about the strong eye and bare skin).

I loved the way that the ceramidin liquid made my skin feel, but it freaked out my acne and caused a lot of extra breakouts, so I gave it to my grandma. I was so bummed out because I wanted to love it and use it so badly. My grandma adored it though.

I wonder if it was the alcohol content? The ceramidin cream that Dr jart makes has the ceramides but not the alcohol. If you loved it, that might be worth trying. I also had good results for my redness with the tiger grass cream.

I've decided to buy re-useable cotton/bamboo rounds as well. It required some consideration of my no-buy rules, because I currently use disposable rounds both for makeup and for removing nail polish. I'm obviously going to continue to use disposable rounds for nail polish, so I had to ask myself if buying reusable ones was effectively creating a new category during my no buy. But when I considered some of the goals of my no-buy, goals which include saving money and being less wasteful, it was clear that buying these re-useable cotton rounds was in the spirit of my no-buy even if its place in the rules was slightly unclear.

Love the idea of cotton rounds, but really don't like them in practice :( Maybe it's just the set that I bought (I got them on Etsy but they seem to be very similar to the ones that you have, where it's 2 layers of material hemmed around the edge to keep them together) but they absorb so much of whatever I put on them that I find I have to use 2-3x the amount of product that I normally would with disposable cotton rounds. If anyone has found a brand or technique that sidesteps this issue I would love to know, because right now I'm having to decide between essentially wasting product, or wasting cotton
@HannahLouisePoston
@HannahLouisePoston 6 лет назад
good point. I find them useful for cleanup but I might not enjoy them as much for product application if that's what I was doing. maybe when I make my own I'll try making smaller ones to see if they absorb less.
@azkaland
@azkaland 5 лет назад
I make and sell my own cotton rounds, and I don't really have this issue. Of course, I've used them for so long I can't exactly remember how much product it uses compared to the disposable ones, but it doesn't seem like a lot. I would suggest washing and drying them without fabric softener which may help some, they'll be a bit stiffer.

I laughed out loud when the cat meowed! 😹 You’re so great at explaining perfumes!! I was totally with you when you were describing it. I really want to try the Hada Labo Essence. Is it thinner than the Belif Essence? @HannahLouisePoston
@HannahLouisePoston 6 лет назад
Hi Jess! Yeah those alley cats are out of control. We have 10! The Hada Labo is not thinner than the Belif, it's pretty viscous and becomes a bit sticky when you pat it in, but it does fully absorb. I'm checking out your video right now, it's awesome. Congrats on finally doing it (both the cancellation and the video!) Thanks for the shout out! Are you search engine optimizing your videos? Your channel is beautifully done and I feel like so many more people would love to watch you but your videos might not be showing up in people's feed or in searches? If you’ve never tried the Ciaté London wonderland volume, it’s great. It’s the only high end I’ll pay for. It’s $22 on Sephora. I tend to apply it and run a disposable wand through it and it’s like having mini falses for me. I rotate it and the wet n wild MegaVolume as my only mascaras.

I really love empties videos! Feel like I’m getting the most thorough review of something and it helps me decide if it’s something I want to pick up as well 😊 Just uploaded the first video in my yearly empties series, it’s my third year doing them and I learn so much! I would really like to do a no buy in 2019 and have been wanting to do it for a long time but I always chicken out! Even a month is very long and I want so much 😂 but I think that’s exactly why I need to try it - to get out of the consumerism cycle 😬 Anyway, I haven’t tried any of the products you mentioned but there are several on the list I’d be curious to try 🙈
@HannahLouisePoston
@HannahLouisePoston 6 лет назад
Thanks for your comment! If you are interested in the impact of the no-buy, maybe start with a month? A year is a lot to bite off all at once. But you can definitely start feeling the effects in just a month. I also want so much :) The amazing thing about the no-buy year has been developing comfort with the state of wanting buy not buying. I've spent the whole year wanting things but not buying them, and now it feels like no big deal. There's no pain in it anymore. I think it's really going to help me budget going forwards.
@renatetalks3984
@renatetalks3984 6 лет назад
Hannah Louise Poston yeah I think that as long as a month is, I need to go through several paychecks because I always mess up and pick up a ton if I’ve been “good” for a couple of months. So I’m thinking a year would really help me break that cycle. But I could take it month by month 😊

Just bought the Lash princess, it is good basic mascara. I got bored of washing cotton bads so i just use my hands to wash my face. I take oil cleanser on palm of my hand and rub it on my face, wash it off and take water based cleanser and repeat the wash. Easy, no dirty pads or extra waste.
@HannahLouisePoston
@HannahLouisePoston 6 лет назад
That's how I wash my face, too, but I use the pads with micellar water when I'm at my vanity and I need to clean up fallout, etc. I also sometimes use them to apply toner. I'm excited to get to know the re-useable ones!
@Puglover130
@Puglover130 6 лет назад
I’ve contemplated reusable pads (already transitioned to reusable mop heads, kitchen towels, and sanitary supplies) but I’m wondering if they’re worth the effort, if I’ll misplace them (I really only go through one giant bag of shiseido a year).. do the reusables take more essence/ toner? I’m wondering if I would go through product faster because the pad would absorb more product ?? I wouldn’t be using them to wash my face. Mostly for micellar water and eye makeup remover .

Hey! I have an explanation about your toner I think you could be interest in. Alcohol is actually really drying. So it can be "usefull" (I mean that it works, even though it's not really the best solution) for oily skins, acne prone skin or oily hair. But since it's drying, it has nothing to do in a mosturizing toner, especially if alcohol is one of the first ingredients in it. Lot of love :)
@HannahLouisePoston
@HannahLouisePoston 6 лет назад
yes, that is what I was referring to when I was saying that I wasn't happy with having alcohol in the product! I should have been more specific about its drying qualities. I prefer not to use it in products that are meant to sink into the skin, but I don't mind it for "surface" products like setting spray. Thanks, Priscille! xo!

Hannah,thank you for sharing this beautifull empties video,I love to hear you talk about your empties and if you Will purchase them or not.i do that also with every product I use up,and if I like it a lot I Will write it down,because I am only allowed to repurchase when I totaly ran out of a catagory,and it helps me to write down which products I like very much and why because I still have a lot to empty first.Essence and catrice have multiple fantastic,mascara’s,I used from both brands multiple mascara’s because they are sisterbrands,and I loved every single one of them,and they are also very cheap,but if you want a hijger brand mascaras that’s totaly understandable because you are only allowed to purchase one and then you are sure that you have a mascara you Will love.❤️

Hannah Louise Poston that is realy a fantastic mascara,I hope you Will find one,here in Holland they are very easy to buy,because multiple drugstores sell this brand.It’s my favorite brand with lot of make-up,because it’s very cheap and a great quality.The browproducts,highlighters,and foundation are realy fantastic,The shaderange is horrible but when you have a pale to medium skintone,than they work fantastic,the lippencil and eyepencils are also great.I think that about 50%from my make-up is from essence and catrice,my eyeshadowpallets are from different brands and Some lipproducts and a few blushes and a few bronzer are from different brands.I love to try a lot of brands but I can’t help it that I have so much fav’s in essence and catrice,and that’s why I write down which product I like,and than I can make a choise which product from which brand I like the most,qualitywise,and pricewise❤️

Hannah! Those masks were very economical- I got them in a bundle at Costco, 12 for under $20. 3 of each pomegranate, honey, aloe and something else. So funny about the porefessional. I also hate it, but I have oily skin and I felt like it made my skin extra oily. Like it combined with my natural oils and then almost literally slid off my face. Gross! I know many people like it, but if it sucks for dry and oily, maybe it’s only suitable for normal skin.

Btw may I ask.. most or all of your perfume favourites don’t seem to be common accessible ones. How do you first smell them to know you like them? I’ve tried SO many mainstream ones and I’ve only found 2 that I love. It seems like they all are under the category of orientals or spicy orientals. But I also like clean scents, oud and Amber. I looked up one you suggested a few months ago and was SO tempted to order, I can’t because of my no buy, but the one with the custom fragrances?! Oh yes. And I ordered from glossier and love “YOU” on, but only ordered the solid because I didn’t want to pay for a big bottle I didn’t like . I feel like there’s all these hidden favourites out there for me but since I only have access to smelling mainstream scents, idk how people get to try the HTF /rare scents to know they like it? I hope that was clear lol. Re mascara, I love Lash Princess (green writing) and was going to include it but because it’s not in packaging (doesn’t even have a plastic band) I was worried you might be hesitant since you didn’t know for sure it was unused. I like that it’s package free though, for myself. I also like Roller Lash by Benefit. Badgirl bang is pretty nice too. I had a sample of superhero and I just found it too messy and clumpy. When I used it my lashes touched my lids so mascara would get all over the place. That histoire d’ambre fragrance, if it’s French it’d be pronounced eas-twoir 😎

Hi Tara! Ooooh, amazing info about the masks, thanks. I don't know if I've mentioned it yet on camera but I love Costco. We go twice a month like clockwork. Re: perfume, I will tell you! I order tiny decants. There are two companies I use, one is called Surrender to Chance (surrendertochance.com/) and the other is The Perfumed Court (theperfumedcourt.com/). You can get samples of anything, or even decent-sized decants in small spray bottles. I mean, I haven't done it this year, but this is how I have smelled niche perfumes in the past in advance of buying them, and also tried them on my skin (b/c you can't tell how it will go with your body chemistry until you try).

...but I just searched both sites and neither one seems to have Ambre 114. I actually smelled this one at a shop in LA for the first time and then at some point bought a sample set of the whole range from Sephora, that's how I fell in love with it.

I wouldn’t recommend the essence mascara as your only mascara. It’s really beautiful when you apply it but it transferred terribly on to my eyelids throughout the day

good to know, thanks! Maybe I'll wait until next year to try it.

I can tell that you have good taste in perfume and that your preferences are somewhat similar to mine. I'd probably struggle more with a fragrance no buy than anything. I think it's the most difficult thing for me to resist because it just provides a much more engaging, evocative, transcendent experience. Makeup helps you look presentable and sexy, but perfume transports you. Even though the money wouldn't go nearly as far, I'd rather drop $1000 on fragrance than on makeup any day. If someone told me I couldn't buy makeup for an entire year, but could buy all the perfumes I wanted, I'd smell every perfume I could get my hands on and buy every one that I loved. It would be terrible. And unlike makeup, perfume is one of the few items I like to have around even if I don't regularly use it on my body because I like to have the option of smelling it at my leisure.

I worried about addiction transference too, that's why I included all of my problem categories (makeup, skincare, clothing, homewares) in my no-buy!

I usually see people use the smash box primer oil to mix in with foundation. It could be helpful since you have drier skin?. Buuuuuut since you already finished it and you don’t seem to wear foundation that much, it’s probably fine that it’s done haha
@HannahLouisePoston

I wish I had tried that! I only wear foundation on photo shoot days, but when I do it does become very drying. If I can ever get another sample I'll try that :)

I need to check out that essence. I’ve been using one of the Blithe Vital Treatment Essences for the 7 skin method - it’s amazing and makes my skin glow like nothing else but it’s £40 and I go through it so quickly. On a related note, I have a bad habit of picking my skin so I think I need to look into good ingredients to aid healing. Do you have any good sources for learning more about ingredients? I’ve already subbed to Gothamista and plan to binge her videos this weekend.

my best advice for skin healing is to take a collagen supplement! When I take daily collagen my skin heals a lot faster. I use a powder and mix it into water or blend it into matcha tea in the morning.

Hi Cindy, I don't have a PO box yet, but I'm going to get one next year! A few subscribers have sent notes to my sewing studio, though, by finding my work address on the Poema website (the link is in the downbar). If you send something there it will get to me!

Did I detect a whiff of Rich Lux in this video? LOL 😂Btw, Lash Princess is a really wet formula, you will need to let it dry out a bit. Also if you have sensitive eyes, this one might bother you when you take it off.

I've never had that issue with the cotton rounds. I make mine from cotton flannel, not bamboo, and they stick together pretty well. I imagine that would be slightly annoying to use. I know I'm a bit late to commenting on the video but if anyone else is looking for the washable cotton rounds, check out my Etsy shop (crueltyfreestitchery)! I sell them in packs of 14 and have the mesh washing bags. 😁💚

If you want to track how long lasting a product, just write the date when you open it on the bottom of the tube (e.g. mascara) with permanent marker. Maybe, it will help to spend less time to back search when you make this type of videos. Sorry I'm a data junkie so I assume everybody enjoy 'use up time' tracking. :)

Anna, I have started doing the same, partik with drunk elephant/Sunday Riley products because I want to know how long the bottles will last (it’s hard to figure out the real “price” without knowing how long it will last) but I need to also start marking my mascaras! I just cracked a new one last night so I will mark it. A tip I started when my kids started school and needed their name on everything but lots of it was dark/black- I’ve found silver- metallic sharpies work so well for showing up on dark colours. I keep one hidden and only use it for labeling and for Santa tags 👍🏽

Just fyi to anyone out there, my 16 year old daughter has had great results and loves the ordinary niacinamide in her routine and definitely notices a difference, she is quite acne prone right now.
