Well, Ive received and started usint both ky lsrge and small Septekber Leather notebooks. I thought I'd come back to add my experience for others benefit. For this pocket notebook, it's junped straight into my daily pocket carry. I have the pen loop which I keep a Moonman A1 click fointain pen on with an EF nib. The paper os very well behave with fountain pens, including medium and broad nibs. No bleedthrough, but heavier showthrough with broad nibs, i havent tested a stub but suspect the same. I also got a zip/card holder insert which has a pen loop, and on that I insert an additonal Tombow multi pen / 0.5mm pencil. I copied youe idea of numbering all the sheets (1-32 instead of each page 1-64). I keep an index in each book using the 0.5mm lead pencil which allows me to wrote very small write onto the inside of the cover. I also ordered a monthly organiser insert, from elsewherez and its a smaller size (same width but a bit shorter. Works well and essily holds 3 inserts plus the zip/card holder behind them all The lesther itself feels nice in handz its supple, gains some character, and it feels durable so you dont feel as though you have to be precious with it. I may do my own review at some stage, friends and colleagues have been encouraging me to do so 😂 Anyway thanks again!!
Thanks for coming back and giving such a detailed experience, I’d love to see how you set it up in a video. Great to hear you are passing the joy on to others at work too :)
Thank you so much for this review! You go very in-depth with the comparison and answer some of my questions with the notebook sizes between the two of them. I have a better understanding of how they will fit. I'm in the same boat as you, with having a small backlog of Field Notes. I'll definitely tune into that Field Notes cover video!
I have the September Leather and like the size. The leather is meah. I usually want top quality but this will do. The best discovery was the cheapo notebook included. As you mentioned, nice paper. I’ve compared to Field Notes and Goulet Pens “Field Notes” with their 68 gsm Tomoe River paper. The cheap notebook from Amazon is shockingly better. It handles fountain pen and ink with little to NO ghosting. The notebook cover feels cheep but the paper has me questioning ever buying anything else.
The note books inside are brilliant Ive just ordered a couple more packs as they are so much cheeper than the Midori ones and brilliant for everyday use :)
Based on what I heard about the "leather" this product. It's the cheapest type of the "leather product" that is made of the different layers of "dust or leather particles". There are some factories that produce a leather product that looks like leather, smells like leather, etc... But it ain't a leather at all. I'd say it's a good option for those who want to tray a TN system but don't want to spend $50+
Thanks for the video, not a lot of difference between the 2. I guess if cost was no issue we would choose the traveller company version. From what you have shown not much difference albeit the expensive one slightly smaller . Not sure I would buy one of these in addition to a standard size Midori cover. Let alone having 2, says he with numerous fountain pens I can’t use at the same time!
Hey mate, I don't usually comment. I just wanted to say I appreciate your videos and reviews, and I hope more people discover you and your content! I discovered you through your Midori and September Leather content I'm a fellow addict of pen, ink and paper. I have eyed the OG Midori notebooks over the years but I couldn't justify the price, not knowing if it was going to suit me. I've now ordered this and the regular size notebook from September leather along with some refills. I don't think I would have without being able to see your videos. It was valuable to have you compare these with the Midori, and also to see and hear how the paper behaves with fountain pens. I'm looking forward to seeing some more of your videos. It would be great to see more content about your pens and inks. I think if you did some more "how to" and explainer videos in general, they might be well received and appreciated. You've got a nice manner of explaining things and you're clearly someone who appreciates and knows about the items you talk about. Anyway, thanks again for your efforts. If I remember, I'll come and report back on my experience with these notebooks for the benefit of others in the comments Cheers!
Thak your for taking the time to comment its great to see my Ramballing online helps People. Ive been a staitonery geek for so long and watched hundereds of hours of video i hoped muy content could be diffrent enough to help :)
Absolutely! Me too, it's been something I've been enjoying for a long time as a hobby. These September leather products for example are a niche of a niche 😂 one thing I liked is on their website they do a comparison between Midori and their own "fauxdori", and it's pretty honest! But yes thank you for the content ☺️
Fyi, if you like the more standard size of the Spencer/newster but the fountain pen paper of midori there are a few options. Clairfontaine (rhodia), goulet pens (tomoe river), write notebooks, zequenez, moleskine, and maybe even midori (not travelers) make a 3.5x5.5 field notes size. For non fountain pens, field notes, standard composition in most stores like CVS, waterproof rite in the rain, and lots of generic Amazon brands make 3.5x5.5. I haven't tried it but leuchtturm 1917 make a 3.5 x 5.9 that *should* fit. I personally wanted a little more room per page than midori and didn't like being stuck in their ecosystem. I've been using the thicker clairfontaine 3.5x5.5 as my daily planner and notes book with a thinner goulet pens tomoe river behind it for longer on the go journaling or stories etc. Fits wonderfully and works great with all my fountain pens.
Also, newster sells replacements of the insert that comes with the Spencer leather cover for a pretty cheap price if you liked the one that came in it. I was turned off by the paper color, personally, but otherwise it was good
I use FN exclusively and have struggled with the fact that they dont quite fit in my Travellers passport size. Can I ask where your bigger one is from? Thanks - good video!
