The Prophet 5/10 rev 4 has both the SSM and Curtis filters available. Each filter has a distinct sound. In this video, I play examples of both.

It's really nice to have both filters. The SSM sounds a bit more open and less muddy in the mid-lows. On some sounds I prefer the Curtis filter, but in most I like the SSM a little more.

Although they are different, its remarkable how much they sound alike. The SSM filters seem a bit harsher/overdriven, but it is remarkable how much an orignal rev2 and a rev3 sound alike considering they have totally different filters, and oscillators. I've had a rev3.3 for 15 years and for several years I kicked myself for not buying a rev 2 since I heard they sound a lot better. although the rev3 is more reliable and CEM ICs were easier to find. There is a difference in the sound, but regardless of SSM or CED ships, it still sounds like a Prophet-5. I don't know the cost of adding dual filters was worth it as far as price is concerned, but if a CEM chip goes bad you can switch to 2040 mode and have a fully functional synth that sounds very much the same.

The first arpeggiated chord,,, love that ,,, reminds me of the best camera shot, or shots in movies... At the end of " THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY " , when Clint, Eli, and Lee, had their showdown.

Another peach. So vintage. Thanks for taking the time. (nice wood, again). I bias towards the SSM (SSI) chipset but I'm glad it has the CEM for certain settings, there have been a few patches in your 2 videos that I might like the Curtis (3) setting more for that application. But mostly Solid State Micro (Sound Semiconductor, Inc.)

The Curtis filter sounds really good for certain sounds (it's very open and detailed, where the SSM-based one feels fatter and more squashed/overdriven). I assumed I'd prefer the SSM one but I actually use the Curtis filter for a lot of sound design. Very cool that it has both!

Great filter demo there, Jim :-) With filter tracking on higher resonance settings, the peaks appear more clearly per note for the SSM filter. Great to have both filter though, as they give you more character options.

With the SSM filter you tend to get sharper, more aggressive attack to the sound. With the CCM filter it tends to be a smoother attack, more smooth continuation of each sound through to release. Interesting gong and chime sounds, as well as pipe organ sounds and electronic piano sounds and how they all sound just a little different between SSM and CCM filters. Then, there are all of those synth sounds that some sound better with SSM, and others with CCM, but that is all personal preference for the performer as well as their listeners.

does the changing of the rev filter also change the envelope slope? wonder if 1/2 had one sort of envelope and rev 3 its own. felt there way on the first gong patch!

Oh blimey. I now have to sell some gear and get a P10. Such a definite, solid sound, whichever filter you choose! I had the P6 & OB6 but found them upsettingly uninspiring. This however has blown my socks off!

The SSM seems to have more ‘vintage knob‘ inherent. The Curtis sounds snappier, tighter.

any filter stepping with the knob like on the prophet 6 ?
@JimAlfredson

Yes, when using the knobs. This is the same as the vintage Prophet 5, too. No stepping if the envelopes control the filter.

The filter stepping is actually really useful for dialing in a specific note on the resonance (if you're using the resonance as a sound source). I found that the Prophet 6 filter doesn't track well, so I couldn't use the P6 filter as a sine wave for like electric piano-type (or organ) sounds. To my surprise, one of the Prophet 5 filter modes tracks perfectly, so I get that pure sine wave tone. :)

@@auxorion it doesn't make sense, you can dial in your resonant harmonics on a Minimoog or a Dm12. The filter stepping is not helping anything, it's a defect.
