I think Flamme says something like how Frieren will be able to kill the Demon King and Serie couldn't. It's also mentioned many times that in matters of magic it's not just the amount of mana that determines who will win or lose. Just like how it's implied that Frieren will probably die to a human mage, and how Fern is capable of killing Frieren (implied by both Frieren and Serie), it makes sense that there is some other factor required to defeat the Demon King that isn't just having more mana. The series also mentions the importance of imagination as well. There might be a reason why Serie is unable to imagine beating the Demon Lord, and Frieren is able to imagine killing the Demon Lord thanks to Himmel and the party maybe? Either way, I don't think it's as simple as "Serie could've killed the Demon Lord but he didn't cause he couldn't be bothered". The series goes to great lengths to show that magic is more complicated than that.

Putting all the scenes together, we have no idea how much of Serie's power is suppressed. Only that it is, at a level of control that is nearly flawless. Her own supposedly best students don't notice it, to her disappointment. Then, when she pauses in her judgment of Fern to ask what she sees, and Fern blatantly calls out the fluctuation, she immediately wants Fern as her personal student, impressed by her ability to see it so easily. We can only assume the far older Serie is far more powerful than Frieren, but the difference is currently impossible to judge.

The fact that Fern could see it leads me to believe Frieren might be suppressing a greater quantity of her magic than Serie. Even then raw power doesn't always win the battle.

@@devonjardine9603nahhh, that lot of mana is serie suppresing it.. and it's already equal to frieren when she battle aura Plus, serie is much older than frieren.. and much more experienced in terms of magic (even frieren admitted it) I feel like fern can already see the fluctuating from frieren and just cool w it cuz she already know frieren mana is alot but to see a person who has a lot of mana on him/her while supressing it is terrifying. Hence why she's in awe when she met serie

@@misterplunderer9734 yes. Because people don't lie. The entire premise is frieren has been downplaying herself for over a 1000 years. When Serie made the comment that she's disappointed in Frieren I got the feeling it was relating to how Frieren still hides to this day the depth of her power. Like Serie can see something. And since Serie believes in living to get fullest but suppresses herself for fun even whilst bad mouthing it as a useless skill tells me the only thing that would disappoint her more than anything else is even then she can't call frieren out on the double layer suppression because she's the only one that can see it. It's the same concept in that time I got reincarnated as a slime at the first walpurgis where rimiru noticed guy and luminous were hiding their ultimate skills by taking a slow leak of mana instead of directly suppressing it.

@@devonjardine9603 for me, i think she's disappointed because frieren is not taking magic learning seriously, hence making her more "free" than serie. Making her the duality of frieren in terms of lifestyle (except the laziness). I don't think Frien has more magic power than serie but what makes her stronger is her takes on visualization of magic. Because of her freedom, frieren is more practical w magic whilst serie is more on the technical side... And i feel like serie already tried battling demon king but failed maybe because of her tryna solo the demon king but yk? Demon king is demon king and w demon prowess in magic, makes her lose to him but still alive to tell the tale.. maybe she's a hermit now because of trauma event w the demon king but yk, gotta wait til the author starts authoring the story to know.

@@lastraven7205 i've watched the anime and read the manga but i don't remember this being mentioned anywhere, so i think Frieren can't see Serie fluctuations. For example Serie mentioned how difficult is to see thru Frieren mana suppression, but the demon lord and few others managed to see right tru her. Imagine how special Fren must be if she is the only one able to see the fluctuations in Serie mana. Not surprising that she wanted her as a discipline right away.

Actually, Frieren is truly powerful. The barrier is not supposed to be destroyed; even Flamme can't destroy the barrier Serie made. In episode 21, Geno said, "The barrier can't be destroyed. It's impossible; there is no one greater than the great mage Serie." In the comics (spoiler alert): It will explain why and what the Holy Emblem is in Frieren and her speciality when it comes to magic.

In the anime, it is said that "magic is a world of imagination." Frieren's imagination and ideas in magic give her the ability to comprehend any magic that exists in their world. An example of this is Serie's barrier; she analyzed it and created a magic that can destroy it. This is why Serie emphasizes that she can't retire due to situations like these, where magic can cause even heaven and earth to turn upside down.

Serie have more mana but this is not everything in this world. Frieren can lose to someone who has less mana , and serie too. Because the most important thing in magic is the imagination , that changes ways of fighting and facing the world. The best example is the ubel’s cutting magic . because of this frieren is the magician who defeated demon king and not serie , her imagination can reach beyond war . Im writing this to talk about how frieren’s world is balanced and the humans have the greatest potential due to the large number of ways they live.

Serie is also called the Living Grimoire as she knows virtually every existing spell. She didn't kill the Demon King because she loves to fight, and didn't want to bring an era of peace. As it is, she is the strongest being in the world of Frieren.

For anyone who doesnt get the implication, fluctuations= supression. Serie implies she too has fluctuations. So simply do the math. Its also important when viewing this to remember that serie is like a dozen times older than frieren who is basically an elven 20 something. So its inevitable that her magic should be monstrous compared to frieren

Absolutely this! Serie has a lot more mana than Frieren. She also heavily implies that Frieren could know a lot more about magic than she does but got too caught up with killing demons. The biggest implication though is that the demon king was on a level similar to Serie or even stronger but was still defeated by the hero party!

It has been stated that mana and age go hand in hand. The longer you life the more mana you will likely have. (If you train it that is) To humans, Flamme comes from ancient times. But to Frieren, Flamme was a teacher. Serie is the ancient one to Frieren.

Mana does play an important factor to a mage's power, but it's not everything. The mages said that the battle between them is like rock-paper-scissor, only more complex than that. Frieren herself said she lost to a number of mages that had less mana than her before.

some comments here are goofy asf. Serie probably wouldnt be able to beat frieren in a fight despite having TONS more mana because how how the power syste, works in Frieren. Serie is a living grimoir, her entire being is meant to hold the knowledge of the world while Frieren was literally raised as a demon killer. They a have differing roles, and to say one is stronger than the other (while factually correct) undermines what their entire existence is used for in the story. its like comparing a body builder with Usain Bolt. Usain bolt doesnt lift as much as the body builder but wins in a track race.

How exactly do we know that fluctuations always equal supression? Yeah, several characters mention they didn't see fluctuations when discussing Frieren, but as far as I know, nobody ever said supression is the only thing that can make one's mana fluctuate. For all we know, Serie could have a minor case of magic flu.

This is what I was thinking. I'm confused how everyone is saying Serie suppressed = Frieren released. It's not really clear how the old man would know what Frieren's mana was to even make that comparison. Infact he even mentioned that he noticed she was suppressing her man's which implies he had only observed her mana while suppressed. I don't doubt Serie is stronger, but I'm not sure how people are coming to their conclusions.

@@davido2161 serie suppressed = frieren released is based on the visual representation of their mana at different points in the story. when frieren fought aura, she released her full mana. the size of frieren's mana at that point matches up pretty well with the size of serie's mana in her suppressed state. and the size of mana is equal to the amount of mana. so that is where it comes from. whether that is true is another thing

Serie suppressed mana is equal to Frieren’s full power mana, along with the fact that Serie has FAR more experience and is supposed to know every single spell in existence. "That boy never saw the fluctuations in my mana either." Remember, the fluctuations in one's mana is a symptom of suppressing ones mana. Frieren has trained for so long in it it's extremely hard to see any fluctuations. It's implied here that the fluctuations in Serie's mana is even harder to see than the fluctuations in Frieren's mana since there is 1 first class mage who can see Frieren's fluctuations but who can't see Serie's (and the other first class mage's can't even see Frieren's fluctuations). Anyway, we also get confirmation that Serie really does have fluctuations in her mana later from Fern. So what she's putting off here (which looked comparable to Frieren's unsealed mana in the Aura fight) is with mana suppression turned on.

Frieren spends hundred to perfect suppression. But Serie thinks that is stupid and one should just focus on raw power. I think she is not good as frieren in suppressing her power so her mana level being still big is because of that.

You can't say that Serie isn't better than Frieren at suppression. Frieren just able to suppressed a small amount of her mana if you we're compare it on Serie. It just Serie has overwhelming mana and it's state that (Serie has the greatest mana reserve has ever seen) 10 to 100x Full Power Frieren = Serie unsuppressed mana. Sure.... Serie might unstable her mana quite a bit but Frieren will never suppressed a mana who's equal to her full pool mana...

Wrong. We never knew how much of Serie's mana was suppressed. Also, Frieren's mana was suppressed to 10% a thousand years ago. So it is possible that Serie only suppressed a smaller fraction of her mana. Also, Frieren's mana suppression improved compared to a thousand years ago and possibly could suppress her mana to less than 10%. Lernen's estimate was just his opinion so nothing is certain as of this moment. Also, Serie's strength does not come from her vast mana but her plethora of spells. Unlike Frieren, Serie has no use for mana suppression and practice could be attributed to her adoring Flamme.

Serie is warmonger and she's better than Frieren. He said Serie isn't like Frieren. He said (Serie has no use for mana suppression) which it isn't true. Heiter and Lernen able to see Frieren suppressed mana but Lernen couldn't see Serie suppressed mana. Serie already using suppressed mana state and it literally show when Flamme as a girl. I bet that Serie is doing the exact opposite compared to Frieren. While Frieren suppress her mana, I beieve that Serie keeps her mana expanded to it's limit, that's why Fern wasn't fazed when she saw it.

Didn't it exactly show that Serie had tried to suppress her mana?? Literally at the end of the vid and when Fern saw it herself and passed as a 1st rate magician. So unless I'm missing something here, it's either that Serie is unimaginably stronger than Frieren or that she just has bad mana suppression

Nah fam, Serie's actually suppressing her mana it just her mana pool was godly that she could only suppress it 0:36 at that level. Frieren's did have a large mana pool but you cant compare her with Serie's, the problem isn't who has the greater mana but who controlled it better....in this case Frieren's were better since Flamme taught her and she has been doing it for a millenia (cmiiw), Serie though didnt really "liked" the idea of suppressing mana but hey this is our tsundere-grandma waifu.

@@divinitylain7790if serie is not as good as frieren at hiding her mana, her student would have been able to see it long ago. Thats why serie as dissapointed that her timid student compared her mana to frieren without ever seeing the fluctuations. I like the idea she’s doing the opposite of frieren, may be she’s over expressing here mana than it actually is!

@@divinitylain7790you forgot that serie is flamme's master. serie definitely has better mana control than both frieren & flamme.

@@dilzyone8035 no man i didnt forgot, you see Serie didnt really "liked" the idea of controlling and suppressing mana (tsundere elf grandma did it anyway). In their world power scaling by comparing and ask who is the better mage/character was not the main factor, yes they are strong but they have a weakness and yet they still strong. Yes, Serie could suppressed her mana but it fluctuated and Fern was able to noticed, being "better" at it is different matter since she's not really put the effort to it. That is what i thought, really love this discussion and bring so many prespective about the characters
