Serie is a complex character. She says one thing, but then acts (sometimes) the opposite of that. It's fine for most things, but one thing might prove to be painful for her. Anime: Sousou no Frieren / Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
Exactly. The way she has spent her life is itself a tragedy. Not because she did something wrong, but because she doesn't even get to cherish what she loves doing for a measurable period of time in her life... Its like everything just fades away for her in a few blinks.
Serie pursues the pinnacle of magic, she is disappointed that no matter how talented her disciples are a human's life is so short that they will never reach the heights she is in. That doesn't mean she hates them, it is what it is. Imagine, and this is an awful metaphor but bear with me, that rats were capable of higher thought and rationale. You're an acclaimed scientist and you take a rat and start to teach them everything about physics, math or whatever science of your choosing so it can understand how everything goes as well as you do. Unfortunately, no matter how talented said rat is, they will only live for 3 or 4 years so they will never catch up to your level. And you repeat the experiment a few decades and, of course, the same story repeats itself. By the time you're 50 or 60 you might have had half a dozen or more rats that never caught up to you, it doesn't mean you didn't care for them or you forgot them because you, genuinely and in good faith, just wanted them to understand the universe as you do. That is Serie. Her dislike of Frieren comes precisely from that: as a fellow elven mage she is the one that could potentially be as powerful as Serie because she has basically unlimited time at her disposal, but instead of pursuing magical prowess she has decided to procastinate and "waste her time" wandering around.
@@ХорхеГарсия-э5е Also that you actually care about the rats but you're afraid to admit that and just lie to yourself that it's just a rat and you don't actually care about it and hope that it stops hurting so much.
you also need to add the fact that she burned and disagrees to flamme's last will and yet she fulfilled it by being the head of the magic assosciation ahhaa
Consider the fact that flowers symbolizes ephemeral beauty. And why she found the flower spell stupid (and yet in this scene she clearly loves flowers). The flowers represent her relationship with humans. She loves taking care of them and watching them bloom to their peak. But she also hates them because she will also have to see them decay and die. Just like Flame, and all her other disciples.
What's funny is that the latest episode cemented the idea to me that Serie is just a nerd who has lived for too long. No one understands her nerdish jargons so she acts all high and mighty. Yet the moment someone got even a glimpse of understanding of what she's passionate about. Like a warhammer 40k nerd who heard someone say "Astartes" she practially jumps on the person.
its more of an obsession with potential she got excited because of Fern's potential being the only mage (we know of) that saw through her mana constraint she is also sad about Lernen because he has same potential as Frieren but would die soon she is petty against frieren because she feels like frieren isnt using her full potential, restraining her mana and collecting "useless" spells
@@0927kiraTldr; Serie loves magic more than anyone and wants to see those with potential reach their peak but everyone keeps dying too fast and Frieren is a loot goblin not a min maxxer.
@@pandabear1576 I think yes, but it's more like Frieren wants to find new exciting beautiful spells not be given them. Serie wants to see just how far magic can go so she wants everyone to push it to extremes.
In Serie's eyes, her disciples were more than students. They were her sons and daughters and she had to lose them, either to combat or the ravages of time.
I re-watched the episode of Serie remembering Flamme. Even though she said one thing, you could tell how much Serie cared for her just by looking into her eyes.
Serie: What's your favorite spell? Fern: ..... Serie: It better not be a spell that grows a field of- Fern: It's a spell that cleans clothes. Serie: ..... You're definitely banned for 75 years.
Teaching disciples on a whim and remembering them and their favorite spells and saying she doesn't care about them as they die too early is bullshit😂😂😂
@@HoaTruong-km9rk I worded it wrongly. He is the first, First Class mage, he is the first one she began teaching since she decided to do teaching for the humans.
@@Light-on9qi they are. Serie always offer first class mage to be her student. The whole reason she created this organization is to seek out potential mage so she can make them reach their height 💀
Also, Serie's outfit style hasn't changed much and I feel like is also a reflection of Serie's personality and her inability to adapt and change. Unlike Frieren, who has adopted a more "modern" outfit (even though she's been wearing the same clothes for like 90+ year).
Serie’s fashion has most certainly changed she wears a blouse and booty shorts with a massive fur collar cap that’s way different from the nightgowns her and frieren used to wear
Any elf in Frieren's setting is a tragic figure. The elves are practically extinct, and the only other species we know that's even close to long lived enough to have a relationship that seems "long" to an elf is the demons, and, well, yeah. They're all doomed to die alone, in the end.
I can understand her, I used to emotional full of dreams etc but then the negative society beat me down and then I replaced my emotions with Rational thinking and suppressing my emotions, this made me stoic as a result, the higher your intelligence grow the stoic you become, emotions become pointless for you. But it takes live out of you, life becomes boring.
The only one that could understand elvin life is an elf, and perhaps she is afraid to understand herself and refuses to be told by someone that understands.
i got different opinion, in her conciousness she wants to reach the top of magic, she wanted to beat the demon lord, so she took disciple that potentially could reach her level and more, she still thinks that flower magic is useless and she doesnt like it, but the heart, she loves all her disciples, thats it, not the useless magic like Hana-batake but flamme
As mentioned before, elves live a very long life so we(humans) just can't comprehend them. Frieren on the other hand have been studying humans for around 80 years so she can express her feelings better than Serie.
For her though I don’t think it’s real suppression. It’s not like “ugh I really want to be able to like those easy spells” it’s more like she actually has a very serious sense of darwinistic morality to match reality. She is realistic but gets sentimental, she’s a borderline villain/hero and only leans hero due to the fact she cares a little bit. She has only one sentimental thing about her and that’s regarding her students. It just makes you wonder how she got that way, what horrors she witnessed to make her think that her version of good is “good enough” and it’s certainly relative to a past filled with just plain immoral war mongerers
She ironically placed herself in a position where magic can be taught throughout the ages - though she will watch many of her students grow old and die, there will be plenty who line up the ranks. Unlike the ancient way - where finding a student was insanely lucky. But you can say - the chances are just as high - Fern wasn’t saved by an immortal, but an old man. And it just so happened Frieren was in the area early as she had been prepared to find Heiter dead.
"the people who tried to avoid suffering are going to suffer the most" -Me :) (You can fix this quote I'm not really good at this) Edit : thanks for the compliments i appreciate it
Serie has huge complex with Frieren, Serie admits that Frieren is to strong for the first class mage exam stronger than any candidate but stil refuses to pass her out of spite. She knows Frieren will never be the kinda mage that Serie wants her to be. Frieren spend to much time persuing "useless spells" and wondering the world and not enough time looking for ways to become more powerfull. Serie is shure she cud defeat Frieren in a fight, her mana experience and spell pool is vastly superior jet the mage who defeated the Demon lord was not Serie. it was Frieren and her partty. Just like her diciple Flame said she woud a thowsand years aggo. Flame allso asked Serie to guide humanity's magic pursuits but she never did UNTIL Frieren's partty defeated the Demon lord. Onlly then she abandon obscurity and founded the Continental magic asociation Maybe she finally saw that the era of human mages was upon them And she cud try to stop it in vain or leed those mages like Flame asked her to do she chose the latter. Her biggest flaw is her pride.
Serie was probably powerful enough to defeat the demon king. But doing so would have created a more peaceful era, and she's war hungry to the core, so She couldn't envision herself in a peaceful time. And in Frieren magic system if you can't envision yourself doing something you already failed.
@@leonardocontin937 I dont think she cud defeat the demon king even if she tried. Power is not so straight forward in Frierren, some mages hard counter others and warriors have an advantage at close range. We dont know how the demon king powers worked so maybe thers a reason Why neather Serie or Flame cud see themselves defeating him. The fact that Serie couldn't envision herself in a peaceful time may have something to do with it. if you think defeating the demon king will bring peace you dont know human kind. A cinic like Serie woud not have passed the chance to beat the demon king just becouse "it may bring peace" she tought peace was not posible to beguin with I can't see her avoiding a fight she tought she cud win for over a thowsand years. he must have been beond her powers. Allso Serie seam to be genuinly jealous of Frieren becouse she is the mage from the heroe's partty she manage to defeat a foe not even she was able to. "That useless mage who dares to refuse my invitations and wasted hundreds of year in useless persuits was the one who did what i cud not?" she still salty to this day
@@Ballard258 Serie just didn't really bother to defeat the Demon King. But when Flamme told her that she won't be able to defeat him because she can't imagine living in a peaceful era, she thought like "Ahhh I see, that will be really inconvenient for me so I won't kill him cuz it will lost my source of entertainment in this world." It's like you don't want to kill the final boss in an rpg game cuz once you defeat him, the game will end and you will have no fun anymore cuz there's no more enemy defeat. Also Serie will probably bring some vanguard in the fight against the Demon King cuz even though Flamme told Frieren that she will defeat the Demon King, she didn't do it alone. Honestly if Frieren and Serie switch places Himmel's Party will have an easier time defeating the Demon King.
@@vertex6586 Maybe, but then again, Serie is like a stampeding elephant. Even while suppressing, demons will sense her from a mile away. Marching straight into the demon king's domain on the back of an elephant seems pretty unintelligent. A straight fight isn't the only way to win, after all. Why would the demon king's forces fight Serie directly instead of just assassinating her in her sleep or something? Whereas with Frieren, she can suppress to near nothing. The party can move relatively undetected with Frieren. So, IDK if they'd be better off with Serie. That might just make the demons play cautious and smart instead of being overconfident like usual.
@@djx7134 That was an interesting take but we already knew someone like the Hero of the South managed to fight the seven sages of destruction alone even managed to kill two sages and Schalt, how much if he had help from the others. And Serie was seemed to be stronger than the Hero of the South. And idk why you ever think of them managing to sneak up on Serie when she even detects someone like Lahn from very far away from his home and she even had an idea what he was doing at the moment. This shows the level of her mana detection. That's why let alone a spell that could completely masked your mana will be no surprise if Serie had it. Remember Frieren was only suppressing her mana via practice, it's not a spell.
It is entierly possible that she is just a very bored god. We see how effortlessly Frieren does everything and Serie outclasses her as much as Frieren outclasses everyone else. Seiren is the obvious choice for some sort of antagonist. The show already set up how far weaker mages can defeat stronger ones with enough tricks and strategy. We already saw human pleb mages do massive spells like that large earth pillar or the fire tornado so Serie could probably do things like reshape the continent or some other such spectacle. This being said, there is currently no hint of Serie having some reason to become an active battle antagonist. If she had evil plots in mind she had thousands of years to do them already. There is also another possibility. I would be entierly happy if the rest of the story continues being about how Frieren deals with her past regrets and with her new relationships. The final conflict with Serie might as well be something as simple as her offering Frerien a spell that travels back in time and Frieren having to choose between going back or remaining with her new friends.
Yeah she doesnt seem like she'll be an antagonist. While seeming like she doesnt care, serie actually care about her apprentices. Considering peace and advancement of human magic was flamme's wish, i dont think she'll destroy the world that was born from flamme's effort. Plus, she did took over in overseeing the mages like flamme's will requested of her despite initially refusing
Id love to see the two throw down their full feelings. Just have it with a talk. Idc (mostly) how it happens. I wanna see tears, hugging, head patting, and wholesomeness
I see her the same way as myself seeing cute little animals, i do like them them but i tell myself I don't and i try to chase them away cause i don't want ti get attached only for me to outlive them😢
The only reason she despises humans and frieren so much is because she thinks magic is a tool for destruction and combat, while it can be used for simple or casual things; its best used for defeating an opponent or destroying something. Very few humans see magic like this and mostly couple it with the usual sense of wonder and magnificence which clearly bothers serie and why she doesn't let the majority of people pass unless their first instinct was to fight when they approached her. The only time she'll consider respecting anyone is if they see magic primarily as a weapon, have a plan to kill everyone you meet and know when a fight is winnable through your own abilities but she will give a pass to people tooting her horn as well. I'd assume the reason for this is because there's very few people she can relate with and instead of changing herself to fit others, she expects others to change in order to fit her interests and even at that she's still pretty inconsiderate towards them. In other words she's a self centered prick who only sees magic as a weapon and wants people to praise her for the power she holds, while this varies from time to time it more or less remains her primary mindset and uses that to judge if people should become her deciples/protecters.
Think of serie and their desciple like how human and cat. We live a long live, many dont want cat but sometime cat just came into our live, we say we dont care but slowly n surely we love em n moment we spend with them, but cat usually leave us in just few years or shorter time than that. We will be sad when each of them die. And many people, each time just say i dont care anymore or want anymore of em after one died, but sometime cat just come naturally. Many people i met just say they dont wanna have pet cuz they dont want to deal with the sadness that come after they died.
çünkü Serie'nin standartları çok yüksek. Serie insanların kendisini geçmelerini bekliyor. bu yüzden Flame'nin başarıları bile onun için yetersiz kalıyor.
Frieren and Serie remind me of Gandalf and Saruman. Saruman sees great power as a way to fight against evil while Gandalf see the simple things in life as the solution. Both Maiar are affected by the environments they were in. Saruman saw the worst of humanity in the East while Gandalf saw the best of humanity in the West. However, unlike Saruman, Serie would never betray her morals.
