I am Dimitri the watchdoctor and in this video I will do a watch service of a really special watch from my personal collection. It’s a rare Heuer Carrera military watch used in the Belgian Air force in the early 70’s. But before we start with the complete stripdown, I will give a brief history about the watch and why it’s such an exceptional rare timepiece.
We go back in time. Post Congo conflict, Belgium modernized their fleet and equipment, and the air force procured the new “two-seater Lockheed f-104 Starfighter “starting in the mid-1960s and then the Dassault mirage fighter in 1970. As part of the update was a small order for 250 Heuer Carreras with military specified large luminous Arabic numerals and luminous hands for improved legibility in the cockpit. Heuer reportedly produced 300 pieces, resulting in a surplus of 50 civilian units.
This particular watch was made for the "class of 1970” literally for one year only, making this timepiece exceptionally rare as less than 10 are currently known. Also, servicemen were required to return these pieces upon discharge and the watches were reportedly destroyed instead of sold off as surplus like the British and French military.
The early models unusually and uniquely housed the Valjoux 7733, as opposed to the Valjoux 7730, found in other reference 7753 models. The model in this video has the Valjoux 7733 with number 48.
This watch is a deceptively simple connoisseur's piece; as a matter of fact, aside from being a very rare and fascinating watch, it is also a stark reminder that Heuer timepieces were also important tool watches that played a crucial role in military history.
Interested in this watch? I will soon been on sale in my webstore.

This detailed & educational watch repair video covers the Heuer Carrera, running the beautiful Valjoux 7733 chronograph movement.
You will see a step by step tutorial in which will be explained how to completely disassemble this lovely timepiece. Whilst you are watching, you can clearly state this automatic chronograph movement is up for a professional maintenance.
Each part is named and numbered, so if you want to try this yourself and you need a replacement you can easily order it, without any mistake.
In the next video, the re-assembly and greasing of the essential parts will be covered. Also, the fitting of a nice crisp mainspring! With the finished result of a clean and revived Valjoux 7733.
Thanks for watching and don’t hesitate to give a ‘thumbs up’!

Thank you so much for this video. I’ve serviced loads of watches but am relatively inexperienced with chronographs so I’ve used your two videos as step by step instructions. The magnification and quality of your videos is so good and I particularly like that you add the part number and which lubricant you’re using at each step. Excellent stuff. I believe you skipped the removal of the coupling gear in this video and I was a little worried I might loose an eccentric screw but I figured it out. 👍🏻

Great video. On the question of re luming the hands, it makes sense to do that, as the whole point of the restoration is to enhance the functionality of the watch.

❤Since it's an old timepiece and obsolete as a flight instrument there is no need to relume the hands and numbers. It's worth more original than "cleaned and lumed ".

Great video. I have a LeJour chronometer with a 7733 from the early 1970s. It ran great ever since I received it as a gift in 1982. Recently one of the two small hands fell off and the supposed watch repair person I brought it to lost the case screws. When I realized that the movement was loose in the case I took it out to see why - and in putting it back I stupidly forgot to press the detent while reinserting the stem. It looks like the keyless works is now out of line with gears raised out of place. How much damage do you think I did? I want to get it repaired properly. Frustrating to wreck your own watch...thanks DP

I always belived military chronographs were differently oiled. Is it possible that this is a reason why there is so much oil?

can you tell me the reference of the tool to remove the driving wheel
@therealwatchdoctor
@therealwatchdoctor 4 года назад
Hello Rodrigo, Bergeon has 2 number of tools. N30638-3 for driving wheels with 5 spokes and N4079-3A for driving wheels with 6 spokes. I has used a vintage 'PRESTO TOOL' without any reference, so I don't know. I think Bergeon N30638-3 will do the job but I am not 100% sure.
