A great video that shows some real craftsmanship. It makes me wonder what watches Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy and Dennis Nilsen wore? Was Zodiac’s customer database central to the manhunt all those years ago? Interesting and unusual questions to ponder after watching a restoration video.

Thanks! I started wondering that myself actually, but think a feature on serial killers' watches would be a bit too morbid...

Wow what a treat because, I own that watch and never expected to see a repair video on it. Mine is manual wind and probably 10 years older with a dark copper face. Shocking how they get seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month and moon phase all in that little space. More shocking to see you pull it apart and put it back together again. Well done sir. Really made my day! ✌️

I also was very interesting in the works for all the complications. I assume it would be rather pricey, because even the valjoux with all these movements cost a good sum more than their base 7750.

Once again, an awesome display of your talents. So glad to see you removed the cap jewels before it went through the ultrasonic then oiled them properly seemingly effortlessly. They can be a pain in the neck sometimes and its so easy to try to cheat and not remove them. So many people just assume the Ultrasonic will clean them properly without disassembling them, then oil through the hole jewel with an automatic oiler.. Grrrr I hate that. The one thing you MUST do is get those hole jewels and cap jewels sparkling clean and the only way to do that is to disassemble them..

Finally, a watch with a moon phase: thank you so much. Most people will not have realized this, but shortly before and then at full moon many people get really, really weird. You can see and hear this e.g. in car drivers honking their way through traffic or - even worse - in the following road rage. Or people just acting aggressively. Because of this, I have always felt that a moon calendar is absolutely essential in a watch. However, very few of our watch specialists on RU-vid seem to see/know this. A watch like this can tell time to some extent, but more importantly, warn you if the "LUNATICS" are out there - just check it! The reference to the brilliant Zodiac killer movie has also been greatly appreciated here - thank you again.

When I was a young adult in the 1990's and early 2000's I used to read a lot of north-american mountain bike publications, Zodiac wasn't the biggest advertiser but they often had a page or two at the end showing some extreme runner/biker or some poor soul in a survival situation wearing a "unkillable zodiac". After that brief push I never saw any other ads for the brand until recently.

Another great video with interesting history and banter. This is an attractive watch with desirable complications. There are a few of them on eBay currently seeing for between $200-$400. But as it's only a 33mm case it would look too small on my wrist. I have a current 40mm Longines with similar complications I wear often in my rotation.
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 года назад
Thanks Steve! It's a wonderful watch indeed. I think you might be looking at a slightly different model then, this one is 34mm, 42mm lug to lug, so it wears very nicely. They will go for about $1500 even on eBay when in good condition. If you see one for $200-400 you should snap it up right away (or better yet, tell me where they are) 😉 40mm is certainly a bit more in line with today's fashion, and Longines makes some fantastic pieces. Even though they don't make their own movements anymore, they have managed to maintain much of their design language from way back when, and that's really nice to see.

Thanks for that! The month disc is actually only manually set, no automatic switch over at 31 to 1. This isn't as crazy as it might seem, given that even in watches that do switch the month over at the 31st still needs to be manually corrected 5 out of 12 months...

Thanks for yet another great video, Stian! The sexy slow-mo of the caseback sliiiiding into the cleaning solution is a very nice addition to you increasing cinematic skillset. With epilame on the pallet stones and escape wheel, do you let the watch run for a period of time before applying lubrication to the exit stone? I read somewhere a dry run period strips the epilame from the contact points to create a patch for the lube to sit. Thanks again!!

Hello Boyd, I clean them in the tiny baskets in the cleaning machine together with other small parts. If there's still some residue on the cap stones after they come out of the cleaning machine, I rub them against the lint free paper I use and then clean them in a degreasing liquid. They need to be completely clean before adding the oil.

Great video Stian but I was waiting for the part where you super glue the screw back together! Just curious, I've always wondered where you get replacement screws for vintage watches? Are they common sizes like you find at the (watch) hardware store or are they proprietary to each manufacturer/watch? I remember Zodiac watches well as my first good watch, back in the 70's was a Zodiac Sea Chron that I bought at the military exchange store. They were common, especially the Seawolfs. Still have that watch! That's a nice looking watch you have there, thanks for sharing!

Thanks Ricky and you've got a sharp eye! Yes, most of these calibers would have 21 jewels, but for this early version the center wheel and seconds wheel run in metal bearings. Later these would also be jeweled.

If I've seen it well this movement was made by Arnold Schild. Missed the oiling on what we call in the Netherlands the minute pipe. Has this somthing to do with the friction for the minute hand Which is placed on one the wheels from the weeltrain. Normally the minute- pipe is placed on the shaft of the midlleweel, but in this watch the friction Is situated on the wheeltrain. Beautifull watch.Thanks for your explanation.

Thanks for watching and for your comment! The base movement was indeed an Adolf Schild movement, the AS1687, but a conglomerate of companies joined together to create all the complications on top of it. It wasn't just Zodiac, it was also Doxa, Favre Leuba, Girard Perregaux and Eberhard. Back then it cost a lot of money to develop new movements :) It might be that I didn't include the clip of oiling the minute wheel post, but these all get a tiny blob of thick oil such as HP1300 or D5.

I wish I had seen this before I took my grandfathers Polerouter apart, had a screw from the microrotor under the balance wheel. I didn't see it and eventually had to take it to get it serviced, would have been an easy fix if I had spotted it but always a good idea to keep your watches serviced, especially ones like that from family that mean a lot. Unfortunately I scratched a bridge working on it and I am still upset about it. Bugs me to this day.
@VintageWatchServices

Hello Nef, thanks for watching! It is indeed a very common issue, and when you open a watch and see an empty screwhole, there's a good chance that screw has come loose and is blocking something. And keep those screwdrivers sharpened! 😉

@VintageWatchServices

Thanks for watching! I don't think this specific watch had any gaskets, which is quite common for old dress watches. Watches intended for more sporty activities or that would say waterproof or water resistant on the case would always have case back gaskets.

I’m wondering if the moon phase shifter is geared to lunar time ? 13 months versus 12 calendar months? Interested to hear from you. Brilliant video, thanks
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 года назад
Hi Paul, thanks for watching! Moon phase complications are generally quite simple, with 59 teeth which are moved one day at a time, and the disc itself having two identical halves. That leads to the moon phase display being completed in 29.5 days, which is a very close approximation to the moon's actual orbit of 29 days, 12 hours and 44 minutes. This is an accuracy that leads to an error of one day off about every three years, which is good enough for most! Loved you in The Sting btw 😁

Great video ! It happens that I own the exact same watch (though in stainless steel rather than gold plated), which suddenly stopped ! And guess what the movement screw had ended into the balance wheel ! Regarding the winding, interestingly enough my watch is also quite hard to wind, so it seems that these 2 issues are quite common on Zodiac's Triple calendars. Did your fix on the crown tube (small polishing + silicone) work well ? Is the watch now easier to wind ? I will definitely keep this video in my favourites to watch it again the day it goes to service ! Thanks again !
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 года назад
Cleaning/polishing the crown tube and a touch of silicone does help indeed, but heavy winding is very common on vintage watches, as there simply is a bit of wear in the automatic works. For an automatic watch it is always better to let it wind through the automatic works rather than with the crown 👍
@montres1

@@VintageWatchServices Good to know thanks, I tend to privilege the crown winding particularly when I alternate watches and re-put it on my wrist. I will avoid it from now on !

Very nice watch and a good video of finding out what is wrong. I have an old Cyma watch that started life as a woman's pocket watch and was made into a Men's wrist watch. Beautiful watch and movement. Can I ask - is there any cheat to know where each wheel (cog) goes and in which order? I always have trouble with this (normally take lots of pictures)
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 года назад
Hello Matt, taking a lot of pictures is a very good thing 👍 Sometimes it can be difficult to separate between the wheels even for experience watchmakers, so don't feel bad about that :) In general, the wheels will get smaller ad lighter towards the balance wheel, with smaller pivots, but a couple of the wheels can still look very similar. The most important thing is to be very careful when trying the wheels if you're unsure which one fits where, so you don't break or damage anything.

I noticed it was labelled T SWISS T and that the hands had slits in them. Any reason for not adding lume to the dial and hands? Gorgeous watch and perfect service and explanation as usual!
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 года назад
Hello Geoff, thanks for that! The dial indeed is labelled T Swiss, indicating the lume is Tritium. Manufacturers did this to ensure buyers that the dial did not have Radium, given the dangers that had become known about Radium. The dial has lume dots at the outer end of the hour markers, but the lume has degraded and darkened quite a bit so it isn't really all that visible. The same goes for the hands, they are also lume-filled but quite dark and degraded.

Zodiac is such an underrated brand. I have an oval cased Senator with the crown push date change. The finish on the movement is just like this beauty, done to a very high standard. When you think that generally back then these movements would only ever be seen by the watchmaker to me it indicates a certain amount of pride and attention to detail they would go to these lengths knowing only the watchmaker would see the effort involved!
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 года назад
Hello Ian, underrated also means you can buy them for a more affordable price, so it's not always a bad thing! But I agree, vintage Zodiac's are very nice watches with a great value to cost ratio. I have had a couple of Hermetics myself, but not the Senator, but I believe the movement is built on the same base as this one. So if you get a look inside your watch at some point it should look familiar :)

@@VintageWatchServices It's really unfortunate because I really like the watch design otherwise. It was my go to watch for the weekends. Stian, I finally was able to sneak in an ultrasonic purchase just now while my wife is securing hotel/vehicle reservations this morning to surprise our kids with a Taylor Swift concert next year. Thug life. Anyway, I see you put parts in a jar before placing that in the ultrasonic machine liquid. Can you tell me about that? Is that too conserve the cleaner--only the jar liquid gets contaminated? And or are they two different liquids? Thanks so much for your time! I emailed about the tweezers, but haven't heard back yet.
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 7 месяцев назад
Well played, sir! 😂 I use jars with different solutions in them. That way I don't have to constantly refill the basin. For a watch, the parts are so small that filling the entire basin for them is also a waste. You still need to fill the basin with water, of course, to get the ultrasonic waves moving.
@ForestWoodworks
@ForestWoodworks 7 месяцев назад
@@VintageWatchServices She found out at 12pm EST about the purchase when checking that the reservations went through... "Hunny?!" lol I figured the jars had to do with getting the most out of the fluids but that's a good point too that it keeps things together. Okay, so you use quite a nice watch cleaning machine and so does another channel. This watchmaker said he used an ultrasonic to clean movements before he could get the actual cleaning machine, but said it's more cumbersome to use an ultrasonic. Couldn't I send movement parts through different stages of cleaner and rinses in the ultrasonic using designated jars? Basically I could have a separate jar for each stage. And I could still put the small parts in the cool little tea sift baskets throughout each stage. Does that sound like it would work to get me reasonable results while I'm just getting started? One last, would the watch cleaning fluids, the ones used in stages in the watch cleaning machines, also work in the ultrasonic machine or could I get away with ultrasonic fluids or dilutions like water/simple green? Or do you have a suggestion there?
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 7 месяцев назад
You can use an ultrasonic cleaner for watch parts in the way you describe, but you need to be careful with very think parts and also with the balance. I've never used an ultrasonic for cleaning movements myself but as long as you're careful and do not run the machine for more than a couple of minutes you should be fine.
