When Fuses don't work correctly they can lead to fire, but how do home owners bypass the fuse in the fuse box? This video will discuss the risks associated with fuses.
Let’s get one thing clear. Fuses are not designed to protect you; they are designed to protect the wires in your walls. A fuse will not save you if you are being slowly electrocuted, but hopefully a fuse will save you by preventing your house from burning down by making the ultimate sacrifice.
Fuses are by nature sacrificial. They are designed to be used once and then replaced. Thomas Edison first made fuses back in 1890 and houses were commonly wired with fuses until the 1960’s. If you house still uses fuses, then your electrical system might be over 50 years old.
Household fuses have an Edison base which means they have the same style base as a lightbulb. The fuse would be screwed into the circuit and if the circuit were ever overloaded the sacrificial metal element inside the fuse would melt or burn before the wires in your walls had a chance to do the same. Have you ever seen the wires inside of a toaster? That is what can happen in your walls if your electrical system is overloaded without a fuse or circuit breaker. This can happen if you have too many electronic devices plugged into a circuit, think about the mess of wires behind your TV.

In Wisconsin, we could not use Edison base fuses because they are light sockets (A 10 watt or a 300 watt bulb have the same size base). We had to use Type-S fuses. They have different sizes, 15 amp is smaller than 20, and a 15 or 20 amp would fall out of a 30 amp socket. Also fuses can have a time delay element in them. A fuse with no time delay like a 15 amp will pop just a fraction above it's rating, depending on the size of it's heat sink a time delay fuse will hold a few seconds before blowing.

Nice explanation for the younger generation particularly millennials and Gen Z who may be trying to buy a fixer upper for their first home and skip inspections in this wild market. Because circuit breakers have been so widespread since about 1960, many younger folks may not know or understand what to look out for, if they are purchasing an old house, and this can spell danger. Even if an older house originally had circuit breakers, there can still be danger lurking. From about 1950 to the late 1980s, Federal Pacific Electric, often labeled as Stab-Loc, were popular, but are well known hazards. The two pole versions are especially dangerous. They often fail to trip, even on a dead short. Another brand that is problematic is Zinsco, rebranded as GTE-Sylvania in the mid 1970s. The breakers sometimes fuse to the aluminum bus bar, and fail to trip. Other brands such as challenger and Bulldog/pushmatic also are questionable, but Federal Pacific Electric is the most notorious as a new jersey court has found them guilty of falsifying they met the UL standard when they didn't, and the manufacturer used a hidden remote control to trip the breaker if it wasn't tripping on its own, fooling inspectors.

Fuses are better protection than circuit breakers but you must use the correct type of fuse. Never put anything in that fuse socket and use the right size fuse. Number 10 wire is 30 amps, number 12 wire is 20 amps and number 14 wire which I refuse to use in house wiring is 15 amps. They improved fuse boxes with fuse stats you can only put the right fuse in the hole they were sized for the circuit used. And you could not fit a penny in the socket and it wasn't Edison anymore. The one connection was on top of the socket and the other was in the center. With Common sense fuses are better protection than breakers and especially the new ones manufactured today in China. 73

I have all 30 amps fuses. How do I determine gauge of wire if I can't see them? Ty

I have Square D QO breaker box and everything is fine. I only had to replace one water heater breaker. The breakers in that old box is much better than the new ones they make today the quality of manufacturing went downhill probably because everything is made in China. I will keep my old but good breakers and box. I don't have GFCI in my home because they didn't have them then but I can add a couple of GFCI outlets in the two bathrooms. The main thing is not to overload the circuits in the first place. It's a no brainer but these young kids think they have to use a hair dryer to dry their hair I remember people never used hand held hair dryers growing up. Bottom line don't overload circuits. The only time the breaker should have to trip is a short circuit. Common sense will tell you not to overload a circuit. 73
