Today, on this 2004 Toyota Rav4, we're going to be installing the Tow Ready wiring harness 118389.The first step is to open the back door and gain access to the rear of the vehicle. There is a panel right here on the driver's side that needs to be removed and we'll be removing the interior trim panel to access the tail light wiring. On the inside of the cargo compartment here, there's a little door you take off and you can see the tail light wiring right inside there and once you see the tail light wiring there's a little clip that you have to pop off to be able get it out and make your connections. Next, we'll go ahead and disassemble the panels on the passenger's side. Now we're ready to go ahead and install our wiring harness starting on the passenger's side.First thing to do is disconnect the wires from the vehicle tail light by pushing in the pad and pulling out. And on the passenger's side we'll be connecting the green and red wires in line with that gray and yellow light connector.
When connecting the connectors make sure that everything snaps in and locks. We can audibly hear the lock click when it's locked really good. Then you can just connect your original connector right back to the spot on the side of the vehicle.First thing I'm going to do is remove this ground stud and put the ground wire from the wiring harness on that stud to ground it. To do this, I'm using a 10-milimeter quarter-inch drive ratchet and socket. Our wiring harness comes with a ring terminal already attached to the ground wire for this application.
So for this application, we're going to mount the double sided tape to this really nice flat surface here just inside the compartment on the passenger's side. Before doing that, we're going to make sure all the wires are routed nicely down into the compartment so that they are not in the way when putting things back together. Next, we're going to route our yellow and brown wire from passenger's side over to the driver's side and make a connections over there. On the driver's side we're going to disconnect the tail light wiring that matches the connectors on our T-connector.At this point we'll go ahead and reinstall all of our trim panels. Now that our wire harness is completely installed we want to show you how you would use it when you array the attachment to the trailer.
So you'll just pull off this panel, the wiring is stored inside, pull it out and take your cover off your four-way connector, route the harness out of the back door to the trailer head. You want to keep the harness flattened just get it about the right amount and set it there and on a Rav4, the latch is on the side so you don't have to worry interfering with the wiring harness and pinching the wiring harness and when you close the rear of the vehicle the rubber trim will help protect the wire. And there you have it for part number 118389 on a 2004 Toyota Rav4.
