There's an interview with the head practical SFX artist for The Thing reboot on the Comicbookgirl19 channel and it's very eye opening to how delusional Hollywood is. He says he was in a meeting halfway through production and the producers asked him "Would he be able to create a practical effect that could simultaneously convey the emotions of pain, lust, confusion, melancholy, anguish and panic all within the creatures face and have each effect seamlessly blend in to one another. Like what does any of that have to do with The Thing? The SFX artist says he knew the second that conversation happened that the studio was purposely interfering with the SFX because they had already decided to replace his teams work, yet they were propositioning him with an unfeasible task to justify their decision. It's a really interesting interview and I'm not sure if it's still on her channel or if it's "unlisted" but you can still get to it through an annotation at the end of the mini interview with Alec Gillis of Studio ADI on her channel.

Didn’t see DC since The Dark Knight Rises. I’m guessing Superman has a mustache that they didn’t like. Well are they gonna pull a George Lucas on the Cesar Romero Joker too? A mustache may not be such a bad thing: You may not have the looks, You may not have the dash but you'll win yourself a girl If you’ve only got a mustache, A mustache, a mustache, If you’ve only got a mustache 🤣
@Numbuh1NerdX
@Numbuh1NerdX 5 лет назад
@@joenesvick7043 They had to do reshoots for JL, but Cavill was working on Mission Impossible, which insisted he had a mustache. They bargained back and forth over whether WB should CG off the mustache or if Paramount should CG on the mustache, and I guess WB lost. Tbh, there's like three scenes where they do it, and it's not that big of a deal. If Black Panther can get an Oscar nom for special effects, you know Justice League is just getting shit on for the logo in front of it.

I know Clu from Tron: Legacy is sometimes mentioned, but I think for the time (2010) they did a good job at de-aging Jeff Bridges. It was really the first step to what would eventually become a young Hank Pym in Ant-Man.
@Mukation
@Mukation 5 лет назад
It was seemless in the first shots that where a flashback to the 90s, and it was visible when the shots lingered on Clu, especially when he was speaking. Michael Douglas as Hank Pym in the 80s was close to perfect. It was like seeing Gordon Gecko from Wall Street :P It will be interesting to see it on Samuel L Jackson and Clark Gregg in Captain Marvel, since they will be de-aged for the entire movie

He's an actor. He is supposed to be pretending. What was he expecting from a fantasy movie? Was he also crying about not being able to fight a real demon? George Lucas essentially invented computer generated special effects for use in filmmaking way back in the early Star Wars days, so he's effectively used his Lucasfilm properties as a sort-of test bed for the technology throughout its development. Of COURSE his name is going to be near the top of any "bad CGI in movies" list. But, without his vision, and the imaginations of other independent filmmakers like James Cameron, etc., the quality wouldn't be anywhere NEAR what it is today. Because there's been such a steady and incessant march toward perfecting the craft ever since effects studios like Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic were created. It's easy to call out "The Phantom Menace" and "Attack of the Clones" for their cringeworthy computer generated effects, especially when comparing them to more recent movies, but most of the CG technology used to make those movies was in it's formative infancy back then. I mean, Jar Jar Binks was the very first fully computer generated character in any live-action film, up to that point. Followed closely by Watto, who appeared in the same movie! If you watch how those movies were made, there's actually a quite surprising amount of practical effects. A vast majority of the locations, creatures, droids and vehicles were all scale models, miniatures, etc. My point is, we all have so much fun laughing about the CGI in the Star Wars prequels, but that's only because George Lucas is the one who was bold enough to use his movies to actually push the technology in the first place. He could have played it safe and not taken the risk, but if it was inevitable that the technology would be added to the filmmaking toolbox once it was developed to a certain standard, it HAD to begin that process somewhere. And it just happens to have been by George Lucas, for HIS Star Wars cinematic universe. But don't take MY word for it lol it's all widely known information which filmmakers they were who were responsible for starting us on the road to experiencing our cinematic entertainment at the quality we enjoy today. Without the foresight and imagination of that handful of pioneering filmmakers, 99% of the movies that we love to hate so much nowadays wouldn't have even been possible to make.
@AndrewBehm
@AndrewBehm 4 года назад
Yes, thank you! People give Lucas so much shit, but without him who knows where the industry would be today. In addition to the CGI stuff that you mentioned, he was also an early pioneer in digital non-linear editing, which was the predecessor to the software used to edit this very video. Dude was a visionary and we ostracized him for it.

Peter Jackson gets a bad rap for the Hobbit - but he shouldn't. Before LOTR he had an entire year of pre-production where they created the props - real armour/swords/sets/prosthetics - so by the time they got to shooting, minimal CGI was needed because a years prep had created real versions of what they would need. After Del Toro left the Hobbit, Jackson was called in last minute, the studio refused to allow more prep time which led to the 3 average and poor films we now have.

Lindsay Ellis' video on it, which you reference in the video, is fantastic. Honestly, in regards to CGI, I think the biggest handicap wasn't so much time but that stupid 48 frames-per-second that Jackson was doing. It essentially doubled the CGI workload since you're not doing the standard 24FPS of movies. And, for what? I honestly didn't notice a difference and the 48FPS version isn't available outside a cinema so all that extra time and money spent for smoother animation that was short-lived and little-noticed.

I can forgive the Matrix fight for looking fake and having slightly weird physics since, even in universe, that fight was not really happening anywhere in the real world.

Haha the irony of Maso saying it was "obviously" Will Smith's human head but not on his body when it was never his head at all and it was entirely CGI all along! Guess the CGI was more convincing than they thought

Ahhh small error - you used concept art of Steppenwolf from Snyder's cut - VERY different to what we got! That concept art looks awesome and you can see it realised in the scene with Lex Luthor at the end of the BvS Ultimate Edition.

I'm pretty sure the CGI Scorpion King they used in the movie "The Mummy Returns" was the only appearance of The Rock. I don't think The Rock actually was ever in that movie by himself(or non CGI'd. He was just in "The Scorpion King" as a non CGI character.

Them doing CGI for the fight in the Matrix showed that it was in fact a computer program and the world was trying to render all those agents joining the fight.

If you want a terrible CGI character from a recent movie then look no further than the robot in Replicas starring Keanu Reeves. That movie came out last month (January 2019) but the CGI for that robot was not only legitimately offensive but also genuinely terrifying. It looked like something out of a cutscene for a PS1 era game.
