SEVERE Turbulence & Thermals En Route From Sandown, Isle Of Wight To Ashcroft Via Oaksey Park

This is the return leg from our trip to Sandown. The thermals were very intense and a lot of pilots we spoke to were experiencing the same thing. Being only in my second year of having my licence, I found this challenging and a bit daunting at times, but I consider every experience a learning curve that will hopefully shape me into a confident and safe pilot for many, many years of safe flying to come.

Really good flying video again Nick. Nice to see how the three axis coped with all the different weathers thrown at it

Great views of the island Nick. You may have gathered from my channel that my daughter and grandchildren live there. I know it was a good filming day but 4K gives so much more detail than the 1080 I use. Flown there and back with you today, excellent viewing (can't understand 5 dislikes!) Looked like a hard work day but fun flights and a perfect landing to end the day. What more could you ask for! :-)

Jodel Flyer it was absolutely stunning! What a lovely place the IOW is from the air. It’s beautiful it really is! I think the dislikes were my use of the word “severe” in the title. I got a few messages off people saying that “I didn’t have a total loss of control therefore the definition is wrong”. They are correct but it felt severe to me and this channel is supposed to be a bit of fun 🙈

Great video. Reminds me of trips in my Eurostar! There were times when I've turned around and landed because the turbulence got so bad and it was no fun. Landing for a rest was good pilot decision making; the eurostar is a tough little bird though and brilliant to fly when it's not too bumpy!

TR Admin thank you! Yes I was laughing about this. I am only in my 3rd year of having my licence and have only started to stretch my flying legs over the last 12 months and back then I probably would have turned around! It’s all character building though and the experience is making me a better pilot. Eurostar’s are a fantastic and highly capable aircraft!

john tomlinson thank you! Yes for a fairly new pilot (only in my 3rd year) it was as Charlie described it, “character building”!! And I will be better mentally equipped to take it in my stride next time but after a while it just got a bit tedious! Totally unlike the “hands off” journey down! It was definitely worth it though. I think the GoPro’s did a fantastic job of capturing the beauty of the island.

@@LetsGoFlying I do exactly what you do and use the old method as a back up Skydemon has fantastic stability not only that you have multi device access, im convinced there are less positional mistakes as a result, I could not have read a map well in those conditions good video and well done for diverting and taking a break good call !
@LetsGoFlying

Lars Bjart thank you! I’m pretty new at this compared to a lot of pilots so it was a little out of my comfort zone it being so rough and still having such a long way to go so I just needed to know I had a bit of respite coming up! I look back and I’m definitely better for the experience of those kind of conditions though!

Love the aerial shots of the Eurostar at the start! Also impressed with the climb rate. Sandown looks like a fantastic land away. Will have to keep it in mind for when things are a bit more normal and a trip down from Scotland is more practical. Good comms with your mate. Looks a bit choppy! Lovely landing. Camera quality looks great. What GoPro models are they?

Always seems to be thermic and nasty going through that gap over the New Forest, especially as you have to stay low through there. I normally avoid it during the summer months.

Hi there. What freq are you on to have a chat with your wingman? Great video mate...can't wait to get up...1 hour left on a conversion to a PA28 from Duxford...so annoying because of 2 meter rule!
@LetsGoFlying

Thank you!! I was using 129.835 which is an air to air frequency reserved for microlights to improve situational awareness in the air! I hope you get up soon - I don’t think it will be too long now!

Appreciate this is an old vid. But I’m really enjoying working through your back catalogue… couple of questions- Did you need PPR to land at Oaksey park - did you get that via radio in the air, or did you have to get your mobile out? What made you swap your Eurostar for the Skyranger?

Nice video but didn't once see the pilot looking at a chart. Over reliance on GPS?
@LetsGoFlying
@LetsGoFlying 4 года назад
Keith Brown good to see someone raise this point! I always check the NOTAM’s first and then plan my route on Skydemon as it allows me to zoom in very well. I then copy the route onto my chart and do “backup calcs” should my GPS fail. The chart is in the baggage compartment behind the passenger seat so is accessible should I need it. I also take note of the towns, cities, landmarks & VRP’s around me so I know exactly where I am at all times!

Very nice video. Well done. I noticed that the camera on the rear is connected to a power cable. Witch camera model is it? Do you use a special wire? I got an Hero 7 Black and in order to power during use I have to remove battery, but using cables longer the 50 cm I encounter some irregularity in powering and sometime fail switching on the camera.
@LetsGoFlying
@LetsGoFlying 4 года назад
Attilio Bellachioma good eyes! That’s not a power cable though, it is an audio adaptor - that’s how I record the audio directly onto the camera without having to record it separately!

@@LetsGoFlying I've been using it too but yet to hear anyone else hence the question! A friend heard a couple of others on 129.830 a few weeks ago and they were 200 miles away. Good to see it .835 in use!

It's a shame you couldn't get above that level of the cumulus clouds in the background... Would have been a lot smoother above those from experience.
@LetsGoFlying
@LetsGoFlying 4 года назад
Chris B I know! They were so high though and I have honestly never seen so many gliders around! At one point we counted 8 above us circling around the base of the clouds! Superb day for glider pilots!
@lashamgliders
@lashamgliders 4 года назад
It was one of the best gliding days recently. At least 3-400 gliders flying that day, 120 alone from Lasham. Some were doing 500km+ and 6 hour long flights. A day out in a glider would probably get you over your thermal fears and teach you where to avoid!
@LetsGoFlying
@LetsGoFlying 4 года назад
lashamgliders wow that’s fascinating stuff! It was incredible how many we could see which is why we didn’t attempt to climb above them, I wouldn’t say that I “fear them” as such - They were quite aggressive and it was mostly rather uncomfortable. But it does sit in the back of my mind as you are being thrown upwards or hit a patch of sinking air that “I hope this isn’t over stressing the airframe”. I must admit, I do wonder what it must feel like riding the thermals in something that is designed to do just that, however, having only one attempt at landing does sound daunting!!
