Thanks for including the stretch stitch. I’ve been machine sewing for most of my 75 years, but didn’t know about this stretch stitch. Your demonstration was excellent, both the visual and your commentary. 🥰

Thank you so much for actually including what to do when you're running out of thread, I don't think I've seen that in a video before and it always freaked me out 😅 And thank you for including the stretch stitch, and showing why it should be used and stuff! I definitely hadn't seen that one before!! I'm nearly legally blind, so I think machine sewing would be a bit difficult for me, and with hand sewing I can have my work close to my face. I'm wanting to make a superhero costume, which that stitch will be perfect for! Thank you! I'm glad I found this video :)

Thank you for your clear instructions. I knew two of the stitches, but I didn't know why they're used. And I learned a new one with the stretch stitch. That will definitely come in handy. I'm trying to get back into hand stitching because it's nice not having to power up the sewing machine and not having to be stuck in one place while sewing small projects.

Thank you for this! I was looking to understand how to sew gathers by hand (I just had a baby and he won't let me put him down long enough to pull out my machine to finish a project I started before he was born) when I came across this video. I especially love the tip about marking a line for where to put stitches. I've detested hand sewing for a long time because my stitches come out ugly, so I'm hoping this will help me not hate hand sewing as badly. I also never knew about the stretch stitch, which is super handy to know for mending. I have 3 boys, so mending is a big thing in my house.

Several thoughts: You have a very soothing, relaxing, hypnotic voice. Have you ever considered doing audio books? I appreciate your video. I'm really amazed, perhaps stunned, at how easy sewing really is. I believe I was originally "taught" wrong by my mother. I think it's difficult for someone to teach someone else anything when they themselves really have no idea on what they're doing. I like the idea that I know, now, how many possible stitches there are, not that I would use all of them. I like the idea of quick and dirty. This video helped for that goal. My other goal was to break out the Boy Scout handbook to review my knots. I only wanted to learn knots, because that's at the heart of sewing. I noticed with sewing, it's not really knots, but a series of loopings. Again, thanks for the video, and I did subscribe.

Anytime I use thread the knot ends up going through the fabric, even when I use a tiny needle. I learned the little bit I know using dental floss as thread which I love because of its flexibility and stiffness. I know some people say I can wax upholstery thread but it doesn't have that nice flex that I like. Do you have any suggestions of something that might be stronger than dental floss while still allowing for that little bit of stretch?
@JanHowell
@JanHowell Месяц назад
Have you tried making the knot bigger. You can also just take several small stitches at the beginning instead of using a knot.

Hi. I'm trying to learn how to stitch and I am planning to use the Stretch stitch then I saw the Overlock stitch. In your opinion, which one would be better with constant tension? My goal is to stitch two white clothes on the edges and use them as a projector screen and will be hanged on all sides and stretched constantly to eliminate wrinkles on the edges. Any inputs would be helpful. Thank you in advance.
@JanHowell
@JanHowell 11 дней назад
What kind of fabric are you using? If it it just woven fabric you won’t’ need a stretch stitch. I’d go with an overlock stitch.

@@JanHowell Hi. Thanks for the reply. I'm using a Peach Twill on top but I don't know the other one underneath it but it's stretchy. I'm sewing the new one over the stretchy old white fabric. I went with the Stretch stitch before I got to be able to see your reply. But it looks good and strong. Thanks!

I have a question about the stretch cross stitch shape. What if I have to sew across the stretch of the material? For instance shortening across the top thick shoulder straps of a dress or top when the stretch is actually going the other way ie up and down the strap, or even a four-way stretch? Does that still work well? Sorry if that’s a dumb question.
