This is the BEST tutorial on RU-vid for making bias tape!!! There are tons out there doing this same process, but your makes the most sense. The videoing is spot on so that we can clearly see what you are doing. Thank you a million times for this! ❤
When bedsheets got torn or stained (usually bleach or rust stains), my Mom would cut down the good parts into bias tape for her aprons. She said the earlier brands weren't always colorfast or too costly. She always wore aprons to do housework but didn't want to spend lots of money yet enjoyed the look of bias tape. 🍄🍄
This method gives you 5 yards of Continuous Bias tape which gives you 180” inches of bias tape. An average queen size quilt is at least 90” sq meaning you will need aprox 360” inches of tape plus an extra 10”-12” to go around the corners & for the ends to meet up. If you do this to a yard of fabric then you will have more then enough for a Queen quilt plus some left over for a throw or pot holders, etc
I have been making my own bias tape for years using the bias tape maker, but have always cut strips and sewed them together, Excited to try this. Looks so slick. Thanks.😊
Great tutorial. My mom taught me years ago when the red card was first sold. I found out the hard way that if you match the other two sides of the cut square, the strips will be on the grain. The binding is flatter if the seams are set before pressing open. I am smiling. So many of your tips were taught to me by my Mom. Miss her.
Before you open the seam allowances to press open the seam, press the stitching. The heat (and steam if using steam) flattens things out, and in the case of natural fibers, "shrinks" the cotton thread and material to regain the shape before the seam was stitched." @@Carolyn-qd8mj
You are showing every single project so..... so nicely & make them so easy for us to understand. Also you never hide the measurements for us to buy from the PDF. All your tutorials are very interesting and perfect. Thank you you so much ma'm. Thats very kind of you. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I saw this done once on a TV show years ago and of course could not remember how it worked. I saved your video and I’m so happy you made it!
WOW! I love all your tutorials, you are so easy to watch and learn from, you always make it so simple that beginners can pick up lots of tips. Definately inspiring titorials. thank you so much from Australia. 🤗🤗😊😊
Your rock sister!!! I have never seen anything like this. I can't wait to make my bias tapes for my next project!! Thank you sew very much!! God bless you.
I've known how to do this and actually tried it a bazillion years ago but didn't have good results. I'm going to try it again - I have tons of fat quarters to practice on! Plus I have a ton of comic boards. I'd never thought to cut them up. Also, thanks for the container link. Do you use an FQ to make other sizes - like 2.25 or 2.5"? Or have you ever put two different fabrics together for a scrappy look? Sorry for so many questions!!
Yes, you can make others sizes too. Small tape, you'll get more from the fat quarter. I have scrappy tape and trim on my upcoming video list. Stay tuned.
That small piece of fabric you use at the beginning of your bias tape seams is referred to as an "onie-offie". I'm sure there are other names for it, but that is the one that comes to mind. Great tip!
Best bias tape method I have ever tried! So glad I thought I would go see if YT had someone with a less tedious method than what I have used. You are amazing! Thank you!
❤ love your presentation of not only yourself but your work as well. Peace and blessings stay encouraged and encouraging 🙏💜🕯️Ms. Piper and The Powers's Family USA 🇺🇸
We all agree…you are a great instructor, making it simple for us to follow you and have nice pro finishes to our projects. My oops was using a Frixion pen to draw the lines…I “erased” them when I pressed open the seams! Easy fix and lesson learned!
I’ve been a quilter and a quilt teacher for 28 years. This is the best demonstration I’ve ever seen. If you prefer using your iron in the upright position you can disengage the horizontal mechanism. Check your instructions. Love your channel.
Oh my, how simple!!!! I have a tape maker gathering dust, and a bunch of various fat quarters in christmas patterns. Have you cut different ones and mixed and matched the triangles? Would that look ok?
Hi.. great tips! You mentioned getting it at the fabric store. That would be great if they actually had any to pick from. JoAnn’s to be exact. After several trips over a few wks… it’s 25 mins away so not super convenient, I finally asked how often they ordered it. The display had not changed. The girl shrugged her shoulders… & said that wasn’t her job so she didn’t know!! And what they had was $3.49 a pkg w/ only 3 yds ea. I make mine as well!! Much cheaper & what ever color I choose. Thank you for sharing you work ❤
In Australia it is $11.99 for a similar sized pack. Patterns if not on sale are $20 to $40 each ( current sale has some at 3 for $25 dollars ) and I just got some fabric on sale to make some little girl dresses for charity $231.00. The cost of everything post covid is insane but it is always cheaper to make your own bias binding and easy too.
I just wanted to say thank you for this tutorial. I watched several videos and did not have any success. The lines were always off after the final sewing part. It was so frustrating! It was the 1/4" tip that finally made my lines, well, line up after sewing them together! Thank you!!
Your video has been the easiest to watch, very enjoyable. How do you communicate so concisely? The most "aha" moment was the 1/4” extra at the start of the matching the stripes. Thank you!
WOW! I love all your tutorials, you are so easy to watch and learn from, you always make it so simple that beginners can pick up lots of tips. Definately inspiring titorials. thank you so much from Australia. 🤗🤗😊😊
Why is readymade bias tape so very costly? I have never bought one. Because it’s pretty costly. But I have seen my mother using readymade bias tapes. Thanks 🙏
I finally understood how to do this technique! After all these years, I really appreciate all your techniques. It is always a pleasure to watch your videos. Thank you❤ so much.
What a great tutorial! Many thanks for taking the time to make the video. While I’ve been using this method for years, but I still learned a lot. I had never thought to store my bias tape on cards. No more ziplock baggies for me!
Excellent method which I will use to make my bias tape in future. Simple instructions, easy to follow and great time saving tip. I really appreciate you sharing this method which makes this job so much faster and precise.
Great tutorial. I've been doing mine the other way you mentioned and the slow way. So I will be making mine your way now. And I think I might as well make some other colors at the same time. Love your tutorials as you seem to make things easier to understand
When I used to go to the different fabric stores where I live, they NEVER had bias tape, I went to a Pooja store and they had SOME but when I learned how to make it, when I 1st started to learn sewing I made LOTS 😅
Does anybody know how width to cut bias tape ? She cuts a 2" bias tape in her video. However, my larger bias tape maker is 1", so do I just double the width of my bias tape maker ? Thank you for your help ! ( Width of my bias tape maker: 1", 3/4", 1/2", 1/4")
Decided to try Temu and ordered a set of bias tape makers and try out some of their fabric that coordinated with a fabric panel I had picked up. The fabric was meh and lost a bunch because it wasn't squared by a full 10 degrees. Since it was off already, i decided to just make bias tape out of it, and ohh, do I love that bias tape maker set. I just got back into sewing after a 10yr hiatus and found some bias tape in my old stash and still havent used it since I like making my own now. 😊
I'm glad that your video is one of the first that came up, because I think I much prefer this method. I've been washing the fat quarters before making the bias tape. Is this correct? I'm getting 3 yards and about 5 rows of 2 inch strips from the 18x18 block. It is working beautifully! Thank you!
My lines did not add up… Is it because I made a different size? Don’t know inches… I cut a square 80 cm * 80 cm made strips 12 cm wide… So what did I do wrong? @janhowell
This was an enjoyable step by step tutorial which was presented at a comfortable speed so that it could be followed easily. I recently chose a pattern that called for bias tape which I had never been taught how to sew using bias tape and I had to wing it . However, I did my own thing and to my surprise I was successful in getting the project to look really good. This video was so very helpful for my future projects. And now I may be able to make my own bias tape. Wish me luck. LOL. Thank you for this video.
I got a vintage set of bias tape makers for a dollar at a church sale. It's nice to be able to make the size and colour i like. Thanks for the great tips.
Too fussy.. Jenny Doan's method gives 200 yards of continuous tape from one half yard of fabric. No sewing and you cut the tape with a rotary cutter. Easy peasey.
I learned this like 40 years ago when I was making cording for furniture I was reupholstering but after not using it for years forgot how it worked. Haven’t been able to find directions. Do you have a transcript of this? I’d like to copy and print it so I can find it when I need it. Thanks.
Here is the blog post for it. However, there isn't a printable version. You could copy and paste the information if you really wanted to, or just come bact to it when you need to review. youmakeitsimple.com/2024/02/16/make-your-own-adorable-bias-tape-binding-the-easy-way/
Love the Video. Best Ive watched. Questions: 1) When you cut your initial fat quarter into a square and then flip & turn join at the top for your 1/4" seam - you show the left edge hanging over with a 1/4" tail and the right edge flush. I don't understand. Ive cut a square in half, both edges should and do match up. should I have a 1/4" tail on both edges? 2) After you've drawn your lines, Is there an enlarged view of how you join the lines for the second seam? Ive tried matching the lines and I come out with wonky cutting lines.
That is why you have to have that 1/4 inch overhang. You may be able to understand better by reading the blog post. youmakeitsimple.com/2024/02/16/make-your-own-adorable-bias-tape-binding-the-easy-way/
This is Excellent! Thank you for providing the link. So much easier to enlarge the photos from the blog post than freezing the video at the right spot. @@JanHowell
Thank you so much for sharing these tips. Could you please teach us how to measure the size of the cloth necessary for a set length and width of biais tape, reminding us of the maths formula?
I knew you could make Bias tape just didn't know how...!! Thanks for mentioning the cotton bunching up, now I know why my fabric does that. I gotta get me a bias tape maker. Great tutorial & so teachable. Thanks so much 😊...!!
hello very nice lady please kindly film a special request video about how to operate sewing machine electric foot pedals please kindly let me know ok?thank you very much 😊
If we only need a very small amount of bias tape, can we start with a smaller square to make less? Does it scale down properly that way? Great tutorial!!
