If your sewing machine is not turning when you put your foot down, then you will want to check a few things, including drive belt tensions.

Many sewing machines use this type of drive method with slight differences. I'm using a Bernina Record 730 (75th Anniversary Edition from 1965) as an example in this video.
The first thing to check is that the machine is getting power, then check the clutch is engaged. You can then check if the machine is jammed or seized. If the machine is still not running then the likely cause is a loose or broken motor belt.
