If your sewing machine is not turning when you put your foot down, then you will want to check a few things, including drive belt tensions.

Many sewing machines use this type of drive method with slight differences. I'm using a Bernina Record 730 (75th Anniversary Edition from 1965) as an example in this video.
The first thing to check is that the machine is getting power, then check the clutch is engaged. You can then check if the machine is jammed or seized. If the machine is still not running then the likely cause is a loose or broken motor belt.

Thank you so much for this video. I opened the panel for the pulleys and the belt for the lower one is frayed. Now, I know what's needed to get the machine humming. It is time for a servicing but I will be able to identify the "fix" (hopefully no others needed) for the technician.

Thanks for the video. It allowed me to help tune the belt tension on the drive motor. I purchased a new replacement pedal and replacement brushes they may not be needed now that the tension is better.

yes ! I am 25 seconds in and this is what my Brother machine is doing, very difficult to take anywhere to get serviced at the moment with lockdown, I have started looking at videos and have been very carefully taking my machine apart in the hope that I might be able to fix the problem !

Thanks for the video. I'm wondering, where is the idler pully bearing to be oiled? Seems like a good time to do it when tensioning the belts.

Thanks for the video. Unfortunately, my bernina 730 record must be older than when they started using this system! Instead there are two big slot-head screws in a similar position. I'll try fiddling with those to see if that does anything

Well, that was harder than expected, but it worked! 1960s Bernina 730 Record. Its has two screws holding the idler wheel bracket. My screwdrivers were just gonna mush the heads because the screws were seized and they didn't fit the slot well, so I used a thin piece of saw-blade as a scredriver that fitted better. It worked! I thought I'd broken the screws or the "screwdriver" when they came loose, but they just needed breaking free. Two screws and manual adjustment only, no spring. Its a pain because the belt ends up going over one of the screw heads as well. But loosen the screws a bit and move the idler, and it tensions the belts! Success!

Where can I get some Bernina 720 drive belts, please? Mine have broken and need to be replaces.

I hopethis gets an answer, it would be helpful, but it sounds like he's a kiwi so he may not have an answer for another country if you are from somewhere else to NZ

I think the 720 takes the same belts as the 730 so your closest sewing machine repair person should have them. You can't get the originals but there are good substitutes available.

I had to make some for my 707 from an industrial fusable round polyurethane belting. I had to purchase 99 times more than I need. I bought 100 feet. It work very well replacing the V belts. To fuse it you heat cut ends to 200°f, I checked a soldering pencil with a no contact thermometer. The ends melt, do not burn them, promptly touch the ends together, wait one moment, then put it aside to cool. Trim the joint with flush cut craft snips or a razor knife. Each country probably has a different brand. The kind I used was made in Germany. Look up small industrial polyurethane fusable belting.
