Sewing Zippers 102 - Bind & Slit Approach

The Bind & Slit Approach is the second zipper video in the Sewing Zippers Video Series that demonstrates a zipper installation which is often used in an enclosure panel on a boat. The Bind & Slit Zipper Installation does not require excess material for hems and thus is a great way to install a zipper where the size of the panel must be maintained. It warms my heart to see an executive of a company be so expert at the assembly of his own product. Great companies are successful when the leaders know what happens where the actual work takes place. Outstanding work.

As a retired builder/contractor person I wholeheartedly agree with your comment, Sherry! I have seen so many businesses that are run by MBA types that have no real clue what happens in the backroom or in the field, which can lead to endless possibilities of confusion or failure and clueless finger-pointing. When getting an estimate or interview for a job I will look for the person I am talking to, to be the person that will be on the job and know what is going on! Less ultimate hassle, higher odds of stress-free success!

Used this method to add a zipper to my wheel/pedestal cover. It was a pain in the butt to take off and put on. I finally figured out I could use this method to solve the problem! Thanks Sailrite!

We are using a V-92 Polyester thread for this demo. In some of the other videos we use Tenara Clear sewing thread which is a lifetime warranty thread. The V-92 Polyester is a good UV thread, but is not as good as Tenara.

You should make a notation, tenara is not compatible with the LSZ-1 machine 😔

Just a thought... it would be helpful for some of us new "professionals" if on all your sewing demos you could edit the description text and list the needle info (type, size) thread and fabric used (perhaps with links to your catalog for immediate purchase). I for one would appreciate it.

@AKingZWldAQu33nZUnVZ Thanks for your interest in this video. No, the double sided tape is not water soluble. The double sided tape will in fact help to prevent water from penetrating the needle holes (if the needle penetrated the area where it was used) and thus helps to make your canvas job a little more water resistant.

I plan on self teaching myself with all sailrite videos to save me a couple thousand on new Windows. But have two newbee question? What does one do if material is much wider than machine? What keeps stitch from pulling out? (Guess I don't understand how a stitch works)
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 8 лет назад
+cnvw974 Q: What does one do if material is much wider than machine? A:Most of the sewing is done around the outer edges (especially for vinyl curtains (windows)). So, you will not have as much bulk to go under the arm of the sewing machine. However, when you do, you just scroll (roll) up the fabric as best as possible and feed it under the arm. Q:What keeps stitch from pulling out? A:The stitch that a lock stitch machine does does not pull apart like a chain stitch that is often seen in a dog food bag. When you start the stitch and end do some reversing (about on inch) to help lock the stitch ends from coming apart.

When you cut the slit through the sunbrella material won't that material fray over time because it's not cut with a hot knife?...Thanks love your video's!
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 4 года назад
True, that is why we covered the front side with two strips of binding to help hid the slit in the Sunbrella fabric. The zipper on the other side will also help hid the slit which will unravel. If possible use a hot knife and carefully touch the edges of the cut Sunbrella fabric to help prevent that from happening.

So your working on pieces that run through the machine because there small. How do you deal with a big panel? Roll it before you feed through?
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 5 лет назад
Yes, when feeding large panels of fabric through the machine you must scroll the fabric up so it can fit under the arm of the sewing machine. Usually you are mostly sewing the outer edge of fabric panels, but when sewing panels together they must be scrolled or rolled to fit.

I thought it was not ok to turn the wheel backwards but it looks like that it was when he was doing a bartack stitch at the beginning of sewing.
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 4 года назад
You are correct, do not turn the balance wheel backwards. However, if it is done in small increments, like when removing a project from under the foot or to position a stitch, it may not cause issues.

You can see the plastic is scratched from rubbing on the table and sewing machine. I wouldn't want to see that on my finished window after spending all that money on materials and labor.

* * * It was a demonstration of a sewing technique... it's really up to you how you protect your project during construction. * * * I wonder if it comes with a protective sheet of paper that peels off... especially IF it comes in a large roll... hmmm... * * * Yes it does... 𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞. You'll have to have some sort of protective surface to make windows with that vinyl/plastic material. Until that time...

You should redo this video carefully. It's not that helpful to watch demos with bad technique brushed off as "good enough for these purposes" since the whole purpose of watching is to learn how to do things better.

The way you guys sew is stupid because in a regular sewing you would stop the sewing and turn it and continue to sew.
