Shadow Man: Remastered Review 

I wish we'd get a Souls Reaver series remaster like this.

i played this game as a kid and i'm amazed it didn't mess me up. re-watching it at 33 years old, i'm horrified at how disturbing it is at times.

This game is a masterpiece in its own right...original or remastered.

I loved this game on N64!!!! So creepy!!!

Nightdive studios are seriously legends there about to take my 1st place favorite studios its so beautiful im just unfortunately waiting for the console version which i can wait forever

Great review! One of the bests I've seen. Very honest and unbiased. I cannot wait to play this. I was 17 when this first came out (I had the dreamcast version) and I have such vivid memories of how haunting this game was from me. The bone curdling music, creepy sound affects, dark morbid visuals, and puzzling trials really pull me in. I might cry when I first play after all these years.

Don’t forget them bringing back Tim Haywood to not only make new music for the cut levels, but also restoring and extending the original tracks like the Asylum gateway suite

Nice review. I played through most of the game on the ps1 version, it was very rough in places as you'd expect for ps1. But the atmosphere was terrific. Can't way to play through this properly.

Putting this on my steam wishlist! I tried getting the old version of Shadowman to run a few years back and damn was it janky. So happy to see it getting such a makeover!

Awesome and thorough review. I remember playing this game when I was in my early 20's (I'm now 43...lol) and my friend and I got stuck on something that stumped us so hard, we never went back to the game. I think I might give this a shot again. Thanks.

Great review. I’m waiting for a Series X release. Last time I played this was ‘99 lol. Glad u referenced Dark Souls and Zelda. I also think it’s got elements of the Metroid backtracking which I love.

Your review was nice and shadowman came out yesterday January 19, 2022 on ps4 and ps5 and I got mines on my psn store and I’m so happy to play my child hood game again.

For years I've wanted to play shadow man again after playing and loving it on my dreamcast , this is perfect way to do a remaster , updated textures better controls and cut content . Great review 👏

Great review, I agree with you and think the remaster is going to be amazing. Lighting makes the most difference in any game, and getting it in Shadowman would make an enormous difference.

Use to rent this from my local video store when I was 9, it’s the first game I’ve ever rented on ps1

NightDive is great. I hope they get more and more classic games and update them. I loved the HD fan made texture mod for this game on PC. I too played it years ago and that texture pack completely changed the look of most of the textures. What they have done here was kept the feel of the textures and everything else. I have spoken to Stephen Kick the CEO of NightDive, cool guy. He noticed my name all over the Dreamcast community and reached out to me on Steam. He wanted to know if I knew where he could find some source code that had been released back in 2010. So I helped him find the leaked Dreamcast System Shock 2 source code that helped them update and release patches for the PC release they put out a few years ago. He was so nice he let me pick a free game form their catalog and I choose Turok Remastered. So I genuinely wish the studio luck going forward. They seriously listen to the community and you can definitely tell the games they update and remaster are seriously a labor of love and a passion project. We sure could use more developers like this guy and his team.

if they decided to remake the game entirely it would be a fucking scary ass game i hope to one day see it.

I cant wait for the console release. Im a huge Shadow Man’s fan. It seems that there are some minor changes in the level design. I completed it 3 times (N64, Dreamcast and PC) so im glad about the changes, cuz i knew the game very well. Thanks for the review dude !

Gem.... Bought this as a kid saving money for my ps1 in secondary school. First time having a screen after a major exam in my rainy season. At the time no Internet and i reached far.. Never finished it gave it another go on the psp last year (modded psp)... Great game planning another go at it heard there's a version from a group on Facebook. Great video, very honest. 👍👍👍👍⭐⭐⭐⭐

Look at the comments on NightDives channel calling this a "cheap ass remaster"clearly those people never played the remaster a judged it of by it's trailer. I feel like those people are trying to give NightDive a bad reputation. If it was a cheap remaster it would be the exact same game no improvements to controls, no improvements to the textures and lighting, no improved frame rates, no improvements to the resolution, and no restored cut content.

Honestly, I was a bit shocked at how much of a better version was. Not only do I love the lighting and how much atmosphere it brings, I was also amazed at the mouse controls. It felt like playing an entirely different game. Then I was wondering if the Asylum would be much easier, but instead the enemies were made more dangerous to compensate. It's really cool to see how much care they put into this after all. Though one part did make me sad - the pig squeal volume had been toned down. That in the original had been such a shock when it had first happened, and it's probably the only thing I dislike about it compared to the old version.

Do you know if one can get rid of the texture filtering and make them pixelated? Thanks.

I rented this game back in the day and it really stood out to me but didn't get a chance to complete it. I'm glad I have the chance now with the remastered version! I'm surprised there was no mention of the remastered sound -- the sound was something that really impressed me with the original game.

Delighted to see this brilliant, absolutely classic game given the spit and polish treatment. Can keys be re-mapped, or am I stuck with the usual WASD keys that I'd rather not use?

I played Shadow Man around a year ago and loved it. All these quality of life improvements definitely enhance the game. Still baffling that people don't seem to understand the work put behind all this. Honestly,I tried the fan made textures and were horrible.

I'm really excited to get this remaster. I loved the N64 version because it was one of the first actually mature games I ever played.

Great review. Good points well made. Especially about the fanmade texturing thing (which are great, I have one installed for the original PC release and of course it does look better but doesn't match this Remaster) and why it shouldn't be free to play. Also I agree with that Zelda/Dark Souls vibe. I'm off to Lavaducts now. Btw something happened in my playthrough which might be interesting for 1st time players: It's absolutely possible to completely miss out on the liveside world, depending what you do and where you go when. So as soon as you get the chance to travel over, do it.

I’m a huge fan of shadowman played the game on every console and this is a huge upgrade the texture is on point. Always dreamed of an actually Hollywood film or complete remake of the game. The most sinister game I have ever played

I like it, but Christ a walkthrough or a video guide is absolutely necessary. If there was an in game map I would say it's fine but very often you get a new item go to the areas you remember and get like 5-6 cadou and now you're back to being stuck but without even a clue as to what to do or where to go.

I love the new lighting. Deadside was definitely too dark in the original that I always had to adjust the brightness by 100.

Just booted the remaster up, totally blown away by how nice it looks while also retaining the gritty atmosphere. I might beat it this time...

I would like to see remakes or remasters of System Shock 2, Nocturne Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver and Deathrap Dungeon. Also Wizardry 8 is worth to mention as one of the best old rpgs out there.

Sill have my N64, Dreamcast and Playstation versions of Shadowman. I do however would love like most others here if Nightdive could do the same with Soul Reaver though I doubt it would ever happen.

I remember always wanting to try this back in the day but my mom wouldn't let me rent it (Yet Duke Nukem Zero Hour and Perfect Dark were ok for some reason lol; I think maybe she thought it was "Demonic"), and later I forgot about it until NightDive announced the remaster. I should check it out

I think Nightdive deserve a special kind of praise for not taking risk and sticking with the OG Source material by not remaking and changing the character models and atmosphere into something new because in the OG those two actually gives and has this artistic charm to the game Instead they focused on the important parts like Giving us some QOL changes,Modernizing the controls,Better textures to the level design,Wide screen support,New Sound Design AND bringing back cut content. This is like the best kinds of remasters done right..Keep the source material intact and unchanged but improve and fix the game's technical flaws to make the game run much better. Thank you Nightdives...Here's hoping you bring back Shadow man 2 as well.

Truly an epic, dark, disturbing, poignant, thought provoking game. This is my favorite game of all time and I’m thrilled for the remaster to hit Xbox and Switch. I’m so grateful to night dive for showing this treasure of a game so much love and respect

I think watching the video the only thing that looks off is that the animation of those doors that slam shut looks to be in half the framerate of the game?

I have never played shadow man but I found out about this remaster on twitter and I am seriously impressed, the game looks so much better with the updated textures and the new lighting, and this is the kind of thing I love to see, its still the original atmosphere and vision completely reserved but uphauled for a modern audience, all the same tones and the original feeling of the game is still there and it doesn't feel altered or anything it just simply looks a lot better! I really wish that more companies put this kind of care into remastering their games as it really should be already, it feels like a team of people who care about this made it better, not a simple resolution bump but an enhancement of the original. I hope nightdive gets the ability to remaster more games like these classics as it would encourage me to play more of these older games and get into things I was never into before.

The germans has another reason to buy the remaster. The german version was so cuted with not killable enemys so you can not shot them and you must run away and something and that is sometimes really annoying because you can not really explore the areas freely but with the remaster version we have finaly the uncut version and is so much better to play that. The remaster is a wounderful piece of work and the price that nightdive want is cheap so i don't see the problem to not buy that little master piece.

Developers who are remastering these games deserve every dollar they get. There is a sense of self entitlement among gamers that they should get what they want when they want and it should be free. This is a toxic part of the gaming community that you would think would realize by now to grow up, but unfortunately they resort to punching their monitors and snapping handheld consoles in two in a petulant temper tantrum because they can't have it their way. Even when the issue is fixed they still bitch and whine about how it's fixed or move on to a new complaint. I would love to see this company remaster Soul Reaver for certain. I bought Shadowman Remastered yesterday and I am blown away at the quality and game play. This was a serious trip down a good part of memory lane for me :)

Ah bro, I came here to see what the shadow man game was about not the differences between remastered and original. Maybe having a title more like "what's new in shadow man remastered" would have helped me save 5 minutes of watch time and 1 minute of writing this comment :D This isn't a complaint, just a suggestion.

I like this remaster, as I prefer more remasters to be like this. Not just a straight port with slightly cheaply upscaled textures, but adding care and optional modes to play the game in classic or the modern ways, and with new features or cut content. Mostly remasters should kinda be like the Halo anniversary remaster or the Resident Evil remake remaster, Or how Capcom re-released a game with new bonus stuff in it, if it's modes, outfits, weapons or locations. like an "Director's cut" game.
