Kazuma Kiryu Imo, go into this with low expectations. Everyone praises the game because it does things uncommon from other games. It's best to go in as blind as possible so that you can experience it with the same mindset as everyone else did 13 years ago.

Most people (including me) praise it out of nostalgia. I doubt I would call it a masterpiece if compared to today's standard. But it is indeed a very unique game. It will either be a hit or miss, depending on what you're looking for. I'd recommend it though.

If possible, don't watch any LPs at all and go in blind. Discover how to beat each colossi on your own, then you'll get to feel the "whoa..." feeling that all of us that played the game years ago on felt. Turn off the tutorial too, otherwise it'll be super super super easy.

I wouldn't consider it shocking, it was a cult classic, but it wasn't mainstream at the initial release. It looked weird and didn't have much hype outside of the gaming community. The game wasn't even one of the top selling ps2 games of all time. I knew about it, but without youtube to watch clips of gameplay, I had to rely on what I saw in magazines and the bits of gameplay on the G4 channel. None of it appealed, and that was part of the game being way ahead of it's time. Don't let the elitist gamers shame you for not playing this on release, just be happy they thought enough to not only release it on PS3, but also remake it on ps4 with some marketing this time so that more people can enjoy it.
