One of the most common questions I get. "What can I get my tone to be better?" or my favorite, "How do you have so much air?" Well, I don't have an extra lung, I use these tools to help me.
In this video, I go through many of the exercises I do and give to my students to help facilitate a better, stronger, and more focused tone. For private lessons, please go to ShawnHeadMusic.com and send me a message through my contact form. I teach in person in Houston, and on skype, zoom, and other forms of video conferencing.

I bet you already know that but I'm commenting for others: 2:45 refers to diaphragm, which is hidden behind The top part of abs (which, only perform a supportive role if any). Fun fact: proper breathing requires very strong diaphragm because proper posture, in turn, requires strong abs, especially obliques. Otherwise the lower ribs stick out. Fun fact 2: It's also where stomach is, don't eat too much before exercising, especially when playing brass, you can puke into your instrument. Don't ask how I gained this knowledge.

I got a Voldyne, they're only about $7 on Amazon. I've played trumpet and spent a lot of time pushing air out, and never considered training to better pull air in. It's amazing.

Very helpful video. Definitely invested in the breathing machine. Also, that Samurai Rising on the desk? If so, great book!

@@TairyuShakuhachi Awesome! Minamoto Yoshitsune is such an amazing figure. I love his place in history but to me he's almost a religious figure. The style of Iaido I studied purported that his ghost visited the founder, teaching him swordsmanship. Of course I later learned that this was a very common claim but the desire to believe the claim is still strong. Don't have to tell you of course that the story runs so deep in the history of Japanese culture, especially with regards to music and theater.

Recently I got a shakuhachi yuu. I can inconsistently make sound but my sound is more flutey and doesn't resonate the instrument like yours. In your opinion would it be beneficial to exclusively play ro otsu with a drone until I can consistently get the instrument to resonate before doing anything else? My reasoning is music won't sound good if the sound is bad
@TairyuShakuhachi
@TairyuShakuhachi Месяц назад
I would do both. Keep learning and playing tunes but put part of your practice on Ro! Enjoy :-)
