The most "single"-esque song in Porcupine Tree's album Deadwing, Shallow
is four solid minutes of raw guitar power with sprinklings of the band's Stupid Dream/Lightbulb Sun sound and a 6/4 bridge that keep it from sounding too derivative. Although Steven Wilson himself apparently doesn't like the song too much (if concert anecdotes are to be believed), the song's energy is undeniable.
For the Gothik Serpent version, I wanted to accomplish two things: produce a version that was much less compressed than the original, and try my hand at recording and mixing live drums for the first time. To that end, I recruited my musical compatriot Tau Bowyer and recorded at his home studio. A few RU-vid tutorials later, the drums were mixed and the results were better than I expected.
