The UK could have sent in troops to replace the US. They chose not to do it. The US withdrawal was deplorable, but many other nations could have stepped up. None did.

It was an ill thought out and poorly executed withdrawal. Very bad consequences yet to be experienced for all of us.

The fact that the UK sent by far the largest force is indicative of the luke-warm commitment of european nations to the alliance, and the many ties that bind the US and UK. But there is a limit. If the US turns tail and runs off, nobody -- except you -- would expect the UK to replace those forces.
