I had the hardest time paying attention to this video bc the earrings were so pretty I found myself being distracted trying to figure out exactly what the design was, what they were made of, would they look good on me? lol so nice! Re watching video now!
@@LanaAndJen that's what happens when you don't stick to the self love narrative. I lost 100 lbs after deciding I was worth the effort and I can always tell when my mental is declining bc my body feels less strong from less workouts and more sitting hunched over social media
@@LanaAndJen yup just more proof he hasn’t actually done the work to accept himself. Fluctuating weight is pretty typical for EDs. Most people go from thin to overweight as they get stressed, and they haven’t addressed the root of what caused the weight gain in the first place. Some people wear their heart on their sleeve, some people wear their mental health on their body
I don’t fault Shane for making fun of his own disordered eating & body dysmorphia, but the way he does it to others is scummy af. Leave other peoples bodies alone, ya know? We’re all gonna rot someday anyway. Appreciate your flesh vessel. It’s a good one.
The most unbelievable thing about this movie is that Shane Dawson ever had a crush on a chubby girl. You know he only lusted after the unreachable total 10.
I think he just has an infatuation with overweight ppl in general lol... the damn fat suit that he really was trying to get his money’s worth out of is seen way too much in his early career 🙄 also I doubt he ever had a crush on a girl at all tbh. And that’s okay... but I think he could have made himself a lot more likable if he just admitted a lot of these “stories from the past” were exaggerated or made up because of his fear to be himself. I am not a gay man so I do not want to seem like I am speaking on their behalf but idk just something I thought about and it’d make him super relatable I’m sure.
I love how Shane's content is all the same gross derivative poop humor (and him patting himself on the back) but Nick's commentary always has a creative take on it. Love his humor.
In the clip breakdown of the first film, you pointed out that the cold open background was not "movie messy", it was "just messy" and honestly I have not stopped thinking about it since
@@brettmastema7056 Yo, that _has_ to be a punishment used in hell. Hand to gawd, I would cartwheel straight into traffic if I couldn't stop thinking about Shane Dawson. 🤸🏼♀️ 🚐 🚛
YES honestly! I wasn't really watching him anymore at this point, but the way that he's always made jokes about himself and talked down to his former "fat self" gave me a lot of issues lmao
I love how Shane is always like “I wanna be taken seriously as a director” “being a director is my dream” like SIR how can anyone take you seriously when you put out shit like this with ZERO production value like? You can’t write, direct, or act.. so u at a dead end buddy
He refuses to delegate too. Like you wanna be taken seriously as a director ? Maybe focus on JUST being on director. Let other people write, let other people direct, let other people act, hire people for lighting, set design, editing, costumes and everything else. Then you can focus on your directorial vision. Maybe get some producers who have experiences and know the fucking business too. But he can't cuz this is clearly all only to feed his ego and there's no point if his name isn't everywhere and he isn't in the movie. It's like Tommy Wiseau but if the self insert was even more obvious and with less ideas.
I think Shane needs to learn how to take criticism and let other people have creative authority as well. He wonders why he NEVER was able to actually break out into the movie industry when he wants to have his hand in every aspect of the project. While yes, it is possible, it's much more common in Hollywood for everyone to have their assigned roles. I know it is scary to let someone else have control over something else of your project. However, if he does not learn to trust others expertise he's just going to continue pumping out subpar RU-vid videos for his teenage audience.
He also can’t take criticism, so he’s literally not giving himself any space to grow and get better at what he does. It’s just a very vain, sad, and empty attempt at getting attention.
I’m only used to hearing my name recited with that much energy from women in expensive leggings chasing toddlers at the grocery story. Was a nice change.
as a fat kid/ teen who was his fan from 2008-12 this shit really effected me and my body image, it also made me think its ok to be racist :) thanks shane ! had to unlearn a lot more bc of him!
It's crazy how I as an overweight child would get bullied at school for being overweight then I'd get home and watch Shane Dawson where he would also make fun of people who looked like me.
@@samthelion3925 FOR FREAKIN REAL DUDE like how did i get manipulated into thinking this was all funny ? and he still has die hard fans who defend him despite he clear negative impact!!
What became really clear in this short film is how similar Onision and Shane's writing is. They both are the main character (or self-inserts in Onision's case) and are only into girls who are "broken" and need their characters to save them/protect them/inspire them. None of the women in their works have agency of their own and rely exclusively on the male main characters in order to feel any happiness.
sometimes the most fat phobic are the people who lost a lot of weight, it's like they are so scared to go back they externalize their self loathing onto others
omg that's such a good way of putting it. it's sort of similar to openly lgbt people having previously lived their lives as incredibly homophobic/transphobic as a way to cope with their inner conflict of self identity. but so so so many overweight people are totally miserable with their situation and cope with it by hating fatness in general, which I mean it makes sense it's hard not to project your struggles and self hatred for your trait to others with that trait. doesn't make it any less disgusting and morally reprehensible, but it does make sense.
A lot of people who were overweight and lose some of it, realize how much better society treats them when their thinner, and it genuinely fucks with people's heads. I can see how some people would get on the bandwagon of hating on other fat people, because, as you pointed out, they're afraid of going back to that reality and losing the approval and even love they have received for being thinner.
@@Listening_Books12345yep. Also people get this twisted mindset that they’re better because “they did the work” and forget how hard it was to finally get in shape and long it took. They start to think fat people are just lazy, and “they did it, it’s not that hard”. Then they get fat again and are still miserable people lol
I truly grew up with Shane Dawson. No wonder I had to relearn everything about being a decent human being after I became old enough to see what was going on
So... the actress that plays Patty has been on General Hospital for years. I need to know how Shane Dawson kept getting these beautiful actresses and how we can keep him away from them moving forward.
> Establish a team of cyber scouts to keep tabs on Dawson > Determine when he's working on a new project and auditioning/hiring actors > Determine what salary he will offer/has offered the actress > Launch online fundraiser for $1 over that amount > Give money to actress on the condition that she not appear in his film
here's why I think it kind of works and why it's okay for me to laugh at the joke: 1. drew Monson is naturally funny and charismatic. he has pretty good timing and does a good job imitating the mannerisms of bad slam poetry but with funny lines 2. the joke is on him, and it's a joke that doesn't also take others down with him. Shane Dawson is constantly making jokes at the expense of others, and most of his self depreciating jokes still manage to put others down (people who may be like him in some way, like fat/unpopular people). drew acknowledging that people don't like him, but blaming it on some completely random thing while the thing couldn't be insulting to people who may be like him, is funny 3. the word foreskin is contextually shocking and subverts your expectations, and subverting expectations is pretty much all comedy is 4. drew portrays this line with so much confidence and self assurance and being so unaware of how, in reality, incredibly embarrassing this moment would be is so convincing and feels authentic, making the joke work. 5. the idea that he thought this was so good, that it should be the routine he uses for his audition. out of anything, this he considered to be worthy of getting a part from an audition I'm no genius, but with drew, someone who I obviously really like and admire his comedy, it's so fun to break down why he works because he genuinely has a method. he is no Shane, someone who wants to be shocking at ANY cost, in order to seem edgy and groundbreaking by not abiding to normal comedic rules. drew actually has skill, while Shane has none. and when you have a film surrounded by Shane Dawson writing and performances, it makes the skilled moments much more impactful.
the "high school musical" line bothers me because every theatre teacher, especially "crazy" ones, would know the name of the musical being put on. if he for some reason couldn't secure a name for one line, then make up a name just like he did for the characters, and literally like Disney did in High School Musical
“Specifically Spoiled!” = Something Rotten! “Nothing Happens” = Anything Goes “$10 Dollar Bill” = Hamilton “Witch of the West” = Wicked “The Tiger Queen” = The Lion King “Big Mall Of Wonders” = Little Shop of Horrors “Knee Tight” = Footloose “Oil” = Grease
@@terra_the_nightingale135 “Mortgage” = Rent “Territory!” = “Oklahoma!” “Violinist on the House” = Fiddler on the Roof “Western Book” = West Side Story “The Scent of Fragrance” = The Sound of Music
@@DearestFandoms Hello perfume my old friend. I've come to talk to you again... ...and the vision that was planted in my brain still reamins within the scent of fragrence.......
@@DearestFandoms Not even "Territory!", just any other state. Kansas! Maine! Ohio! Or just pick any story that's in the public domain already and say it's a musical.
It just shows that no one looks over his work. And those that do and maybe want to edit it, obviously are just "haters" and don't understand his creative genius.
"That even conservatives dont think it has a soul yet" 💀💀 I love how some of your wittiest quips just sucker punch me when I'm not even expecting it 😄❤
What gets me is that he wanted to transition to doing actual movies YET, he couldn't take criticism and he was so intent on doing the editing, acting, directing of "So Cool" when it should have gone to someone else.
@@macpomeroy1166 money. That's why he is still with Shane. After everything that has come out and is coming out and you still stay with someone there is a reason and it's money
My pet peeve in movies is every people call each other by their full name, or by their last name. The only people that would call me by my last name were my teachers.
I now work with my old English teacher and anytime we see eachother we say 'JOHNSON....' 'BOYLAN' it's specific to our relationship - like he can't bring himself to say my first name because I was his student so it's too weird. I like it, but absolutely you're right! Xxxxx
@@cheekofeather6310 my teachers call me by my first name because my last name is hard to pronounce for alot of them and I say mrs or mr (their last name) because: boundaries.
Nah, I had a friend who would call me by my last name. I thought it was cute. Also, I never knew teachers don’t call students by their first names. All my teachers did. Was that weird? Once I reached high school. I stopped using Mr and Mrs last beams when addressing teachers, I would either call them miss or mister, or their last name. Like I had a teacher name roundtree, but I just called him roundtree.
Nick do you write these jokes? They come out so damn smooth and hilarious that I have to know if it just leaves that film student brain of yours in the moment or if it’s a mix of that and remembering a comeback in a shower and writing it in
I wonder that too! I think he can spit jokes out easily but it might be a mix of some coming off the top of his head and him remembering something later. Reminds me of Danny Gonzalez. But I have a friend who reminds me of nick and the humor really is just naturally there and it comes out easily
Imagine growing for, like, 50 years- from a tiny seed to a beautiful, grand tree... Only to be chopped down, pulped into paper, and have Shane Dawson's book printed onto your corpse. Those poor trees.
As someone who struggled with their self image in middle and high school, this video would have RUINED me. Thank you for calling out how contrite and gross it is.
"This one time I saw Nick wearing hooped earrings and drinking kombucha, so I wore hoop earrings and drank kombucha..." 💕 Edit : my accent came out in my comment - the SHAAAME ❤️
Shane: “and all the theater kids agreed she was the best.” Me: They would never (Most theater kids will beat each almost to death just for the chance to play some random table for 8 hours, don’t lie to me)
I auditioned for a play and was given the role of sound technician. 🙃 I had to have a special effect for EVERYTHING like doors, footsteps, creaks. The teacher was nuttier than squirrel shit.
As a kid I was so politically incorrect and was taught by him that anyone complaining just couldn’t take a joke and not that it was all plain hateful , racist, homophobic, and overall evil. God knows just how many people still hold those believes just cause of Shane.
I actually liked one of his conspiracy videos. His stupid conspiracy voice was annoying, but in the one I watched it seemed like he was acting serious in the video but not taking it super seriously (the mattress store money laundering one - that was him, right?)
I feel like Shane and Ryland probably watch your videos and get all ready with snacks and tissues for when they cry. Like your commentary is always funny, you give good critiques and advise, but you always drag them to hell lmao
Also, as far as needing a costume designer on set is concerned, that's accurate... I couldn't tell at first if Pattie was supposed to be Shane's fellow student (I was pretty sure yes, but idk), or a female teacher, because she looked like she was wearing a Macy's business casual set. (Then again, that is what most plus-sized girls/AFAB people back in my day had to wear to school, especially if you couldn't afford Lane Bryant/'specifically plus-size store' prices, where two tops is like >$100. We had to do our best with mom-clothes, because all the "juniors" stuff came in junior sizes ONLY.)
22:00 this honestly kind of reminds me of something Onision would write, except if he was gay and thought he was writing something comedic and not unintentionally horrifying. Ew. Stop trying to "fix" girls/being attracted to girls specifically for their vulnerabilities in a creepy, exploitative way.
I was fat (although "smallfat" I guess; I was under 200 lbs) in high school AND I had stereotypical "fat person" disordered eating habits (due to suddenly being put on a restrictive meal plan for T1D management as a little kid... and still kind of do have those habits, although getting an insulin pump, moving out, and not feeling scrutinized about what I eat anymore has ironically helped me a lot), and I still never ate someone else's entire birthday cake, especially not a little kid's. If this was a real person confessing this, that would be a valid ED experience, but it's just some stereotypical "greedy fat person" BS that Shane Dawson wrote for a fat girl he allegedly knew to allegedly say. Fuck that.
These past two short films read as one of those tumblr posts where the author has a “cool/crazy teacher” who is into the same thing they are in a situation that totally 100% happened in real life
The distinction between Nick being GENUINELY funny vs Shane trying to be funny and missing the mark is INTENSE. Nick's small sassy jokes and quips make me laugh so much harder than Shane ever has, and it speaks volumes
“Question for the cinematographer: why did you shoot this entire movie through the peephole at an adult bookstore?” 😂😂😂 “Those extras on the side of the frame look they’re getting sucked into Jumanji.” 🤣🤣🤣☠️☠️☠️🚑🚑🚑
Omg I have naturally curly hair and I hate when they say a character has curly hair and it’s from a curling iron. Like you can’t really find one actor with curly hair?!
shane dawson fully made me feel like i needed to be ok with awful eating disorder jokes when i was in 6th grade suffering from anorexia/bulimia and that it wasn’t as serious as i felt like it was bc people were able to joke about it like everyone did it
My daughter is getting ready to graduate from high school in 2 weeks and can't wait to get the hell out of her racist homophobic hell hole school and head off to a awesome accepting college
For Shane’s content always having the same gross jokes and awful storytelling and filmography and Nick being able to STILL find new things to say and make this videos new, fresh and creative just proves one thing...Nick is great at commentary content
If you want a year of content, you should check out Doug Walker's (Nostalgia Critic) stuff, mostly his own movies. He's such a piss poor filmmaker. Everything is off.
omg yes I know that Doug is sort of a low hanging fruit, but frankly I don't care I love to see him get dragged. and me adoring nicks method of critiquing and deconstructing media would be absolutely wonderful for Doug walker content. and imo, I think Doug is worse than Shane, at least at making media and storytelling, obviously he's not as morally reprehensible as Shane. Doug is 100% a try hard, someone who is clearly very resentful of the fact that he is not a major director/writer/producer of mainstream media, and someone who has 0 humility about himself. obviously shane has an ego through the roof and takes himself too seriously, but in comparison, Doug walker is on a whole other level of delusion. another fun difference between the two is that doug is clearly so passionate about films and film making, he so clearly wants to be huge, and he has so many ideas for what he could do and what he can do for films. not that Shane ISNT passionate, but filmmaking is all Doug cares about, and his passion feels more sincere and kind of more innocent and loving. so his failure to make good media is kind of more compelling and it would be different to deconstruct, compared to how Shane fails. I do adore nicks Shane content, but I just think any deconstruction videos on Doug would be perfect.
Can we just take a moment to acknowledge that the only good thing out of "I Hate My Selfie 2" is that the actress who played the love interested ended up getting a semi-regular gig on General Hospital a few years ago and has since had a giant glow up (even though she was pretty at her original weight) within the last year.
'If you work on movies within a year you will have worked on 3 sets involving schools' Me watching from a film set at a school location in Vancouver; 👁️👄👁️
i came back to rewatch this and it reminded me that when i was in my eating disorder treatment this 13 year old was in my group and she loved shane dawson and when we were leaving after spending everyday together for 5 weeks her mom got her tickets to see shane dawson and she was so excited. i was like 22 at the time and i remember hearing about him previously (im black lol) and i was like "no cant be the jawn im thinking about" but it IS and i'm just like :O the memory hit me like a freight train omg hope that girl is ok she was watching this garbage loland she was non white latina....bless her heart..
TOTALLY unrelated but I just want to say thank you for encouraging us to buy clothing steamers, got one yesterday and my shirts have never been so crisp! Bless you!
in the first couple seconds I tought it was a re-upload, then I noticed the earings and went "oh no.. there are even more shane dawson movies..." (no, I don´t read titles, I already know I'm going to like Nick's video and I can´t be bothered to remember Shane's movies' titles)
Hard to say, as someone who used to be fat I will note: A) when you used to make so many self-deprecating weight jokes, those are hard to unlearn because it's like half of your jokes and B) I still feel like a fat person sometimes even though logically I know I'm not. I try very hard to avoid making fat jokes anymore because I understand that now they just come off as fatphobic, especially talking to people who didn't know me before I lost weight. But sometimes a joke honestly just slips out and then I have to cover my ass and explain. The other thing I mentioned is that I feel I will always be perceived as fat, probably that would be called body dysmorphia. My formative years were spent being fat and treated differently for it and even if I understand that I look thinner now, I still have all these weird deep-seated issues. However in Shane's case he didn't just make a few jokes, he made an entire ass short film to take cheap shots at fat people and unload his internalised fatphobia so... I guess I understand it but it in no way excuses it. Especially because he was a fully grown adult with a large, young, impressionable audience.
OOOOH, the earrings are the _perfect_ accessory for ripping into Shane! I can totally see you taking them out right before an especially vicious read. 💅💃
"And when I saw her shoulders, they looked like the arm of a couch sort of." I HOWLED. Ladies love being compared to furniture, it's like their favourite thing! I sadly watched Shane's stuff back in highschool. RU-vid in the late 2000s is a fever dream of cringe, the bar was pretty low back then. Love your videos. The fact you point out the flaws in lighting, costume and set design and writing shows just how much better Shane's work could have been instead of phoning it in.
