Parents or guardians train their kids to see God as a real entity whom they must respect, and to the children, God becomes as real as anyone but a lot more feared. So it's not totally implausible to me that a couple of kids would take their mom's word for it, but they also had to have been very sheltered for the older son to also have been invested in the lottery result. Shane's movie even does that poorly, though. I lived in this kind of family my whole childhood as the black sheep. My sister and I were piss-scared of breaking any kind of rule that would anger God. It's a form of child abuse and I won't hear otherwise. Shane's mom though seems totally normal (as portrayed by Missi Pyle) and not like she would over-shelter her sons, especially if one of them casually wants a skateboard and the other would go on to happily make unwatchable videos as a career with her apparent blessing. Shane and his mom both casually chat up strangers at the liquor store, two things that wouldn't happen in a brainwashed family (you can spot them based on how much life the kids are comfortable enough to show; my family didn't drink at all and was afraid of outsiders). The reality is Shane thinks his audience is full of idiots whom he can manipulate at will. Shane and his brother earnestly awaiting the results didn't actually happen, if the entire story ever really happened in the first place (none of us can say for sure). That was included so that *we* could await with bated breath and be totally dejected that Shane's mom didn't win the lottery in the end, only to then rejoice that Shane Dawson, a slimy man in California who has no impact on my life outside the internet, is now rich enough to buy his mom a house. What sterling movie-making /s

It's also great for comedy - the best comedy comes from real stuff like this. But it doesn't surprise me that Shane couldn't succeed in either ditection.

And as was said above, even students usually get several short films under their belt, and _sooo_ many RU-vid creators have dozens or more. Now, if he had made a few full length theatrical movies with funding and everything, then yeah I'd be baffled as well. That's not to say that people with name recognition don't easily get funding even without talent, but it's easier to be a RU-vidr turned actor than director - producers take one look at the shitshow that happened behind the scenes of Not Cool and say yeah, we aren't working with this douche.

Always fed, I had clothes (granted all hand-me-downs and my shoes *had* to be literally broken enough that my feet were coming through for my mum to justify buying new ones) we always had what we needed for school, always had electricity and water and my parents always had their cars (even tho my mum’s car was so damn old we had to open the doors with a screwdriver like idk they wouldn’t open?? And my dad’s ute literally had a rusted hole in the passenger footwell looool) and though I had to see my parents constantly stressed about money, living week to week despite working hard, seeing my mum cry whenever a bill arrived or after she did the grocery shopping, doing the best they could... I mean it was not poverty. I know I had it so much better than so many children. I used to think adults just had *money* lol and didn’t understand why my mum was always so stressed. Once I asked her ‘well you have other money right?’ Bc I had a concept of savings. And she was like girl no we don’t have savings pls. But I was lucky to have a roof over my head, they put so much effort into our birthdays and Christmas and stuff, we had what we needed. We had one channel on the TV lol but ffs we had a TV! And we were still made fun of constantly for being ‘poor’🙄🙄 but it wasn’t poverty. It was hard. But I am grateful for what we had bc so many children dont get their basic needs met not always bc a parent isn’t trying but because they simply can’t afford it :(

I remember my dad put me and my siblings through charter school, and used up all the money in order to prove my mom that he's a good dad. He then would steal belts, shoes and shirts for our uniforms 💀
