I don’t think this should be a controversial opinion, but if a RU-vidr uses their platform to s*xualize children or perform minstrel shows… they don’t deserve that platform. And they *especially* don’t deserve to make millions off of it. I don’t want to hear Shane complain literally ever again in any way, shape, or form when he’s just lucky his channel wasn’t permanently deleted.

D'Angelo's deep dive did a great job showing just how much there was. At some point I got uncomfortable and overwhelmed, and then there was still so much he was about to cover. Racism, stereotyping, black face, disgusting comments and "jokes" about animals and children, sexualising children, allowing his fans to act sexual on camera for the whole world, including creeps, to see. Being an absolute shit person (his real personality was clear in the behind the scenes of Not Cool) and then putting on the mask of the little uwu anxious empath. While being an absolute asshole to literally all of his friends. I mean, there's a reason none of his friends (Shanna, Joey, Drew, Garret, Andrew) are still in his life. And he still treats Ryland like shit. It's not something he did so long ago. It's so much he did over the span of 10 years. It's 10 years of repeated, awful behaviour. He still doesnt understand what he did wrong and that, to me, shows he never changed and never will.
I was relieved someone with a big platform was pointing this out. Too many people keep saying “it’s just jokes” or “it was years ago”, but they’re ignoring the patterns of behavior that clearly show how vile he is. He’s a terrible friend, he exploits people, he’s manipulative, and normalized things that shouldn’t be normalized.
I (regrettably) used to watch Shane when I was a little kid, and D’Angelo did an amazing job with that video don’t get me wrong, but he barely scratched the surface. That’s how much shit there was. Every offensive or exploitative thing D’Angelo pointed out, Shane did the same thing in at least 20 other videos within that year. I can’t believe he still has a platform and he’s not even grateful for it!

I only watched the beginning of Shane on Stevos podcast and Stevo said him and his team actually did some research and were hesitant to go meet him after that but since Shane was so nice to them they liked him and I left within the first few minutes because Stevo was putting shane in a good light already

When kids heard my name, kids weren’t thinking of Shania Twain a respected singer with native roots like me, no they were thinking of Shanaynay and how I was stereotyped as ghetto being the only Puerto Rican in an all white school in KY being called referred to as “Shanaynay” and never my actual name-a minstrel character.

@Atlis De Macro with the massive uprising of every celebrity/athlete on earth starting a podcast, they're all absolutely terrified of asking anything that may in some way be confrontational or cause friction. Every "interview" is just a bunch of softball "hanging out with friends" bs that is intended to make the viewer feel like they're getting an insight into this previously never before seen layer of celebrity life. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this but it should also be acknowledged, especially by the viewer. Less than 10% of these celebrity interviews are real interviews, they're just platforms for sharing stories, talking shit and getting attention. No one will apply the real pressure with even a single raw question because they don't want to scare away future guests. In about 5 years when everyone is sick of the saturation of every megastar/barely relevant celebrity/average person in the podcast place, having a chat with friends platform will hopefully die out and there'll be desire for genuine truths about the lives of people admired by millions. That's what interview is 'intended' to be.
He does know. He did a pre-clip in the beginning saying him and his team researched everything and was almost gonna not do it anymore but pressed on to give him a chance. I mean, steve-o has crazy ass shit in his past pretty similar to shane so I bet he sympathized.
I was a HUGE Shane Dawson fan as a kid. I distinctly remember one of his early apologies and talking to my friends about how he was such a wonderful person for giving such a sincere apology. I didn't even know why he was apologizing, because I didn't see anything wrong with what he did. I slowly stopped watching him as I got older, and fully stopped by the time I was 15. Once again, not because I didn't like him or because I thought he did anything wrong, but because I outgrew his content and my tastes had changed (thank god). Eventually I forgot he even existed. Then his big cancellation happened, and suddenly I was brought back to the fact that I watched and *enjoyed* racist, sexist, and homophobic content as a kid. It was kind of shocking, on a personal level. I can't say how much his content warped me, but I know I was not a very culturally sensitive kid. It's wild to me that after all of this time he continues to fail to make a real apology. He warped kids, he harmed oppressed communities, he platformed conspiracy theories. And yet he'll never be willing to actually admit to that

I also think it wasn't until rewatching some clips of his videos as an adult to realize how bad it actually was, because I didn't remember details of the videos really aside from the costumes. Couldn’t have said it better myself. I had a very similar experience with Shane’s content. The damage he did to vulnerable groups and children is immense. I know at least in my experience, I used to watch those videos of him interacting with fans my age and think to myself “Wow! I actually have a chance with him!” (at 9 years old). He produced content that made children feel as though his sexualization was not only okay, but something to strive for, something that made you cool. It was downright evil of him to treat children like that as an adult, and to normalize that kind of sexualization and grooming.
That was similar to my experience with Onision. Used to watch the bastard (derogatory) when I was 13. I liked his content, but always disliked certain vids of his and grew out of watching him quickly (thankfully) I am very glad I didn't discover Shane back then

It showed a lot of stories posted online by people who had been young fans of shane that ended up being abused in real life by predators, and said they didn't notice any red flags bc shane's videos had normalized adults speaking sexually to/with kids. If nothing else so people (including Shane himself) understand the potential real world harm that his content may have had. Shane’s videos weren’t just offensive, some of the stuff in there was actively dangerous for his young audience. I learned what thinspo was from one of his videos . I learned how to unalive oneself in a specific dangerous way, I won’t repeat it or go into detail but he literally gave instructions and I thought about that information I wouldn’t otherwise have many times while contemplating doing something extreme. The grooming is dangerous enough but I feel like it doesn’t get talked about enough how he was teaching children how to hurt themselves.
This is such an important aspect to his long term influence on young minds that I feel isn't talked about enough. From his videos I adopted his form of self depreciating "comedy" saying things like "I'm going to kms" or "I'm trash" and casually thinking of myself so negatively in the name of humor. Because my friends also said the same at the time I didnt think anything of it, until a few years later when people would look at me with concern thinking I was su*c*dal. I never really grappled with how bizarre and awful my "humor" was until almost college and I had to unlearn all the ingrained behavior I saw from Shane over many years
At this point, it's very clear Shane isn't actually sorry. It's not like people haven't told him how to sincerely apologize. He knows by now. He's choosing not to. He never really suffered consequences of these actions seeing as how he's still rich, we still talk about him, and he still gets platforms. It's so frustrating. The fact that every time Shane was mentioned in the news the last decade, was talking about him being offensive/outrageous. The fact that as recent as 2020 he was mentioning the ableist, racist Not Cool in terms of his filmmaking (which again, we have documented footage he was horrible to work with and that he even scoffed at the idea of people not wanting to take part in the racist or obscene jokes like the Black homeless man scene). The fact he was still selling the Shananay merch up till he left the internet. The fact his most recent "ghost hunting" videos have him exploiting the site of Indigenous genocide for spook factor, and making fun in the rest of the video about him being called racist. The fact that creators like ChescaLeigh called out Shane for *years* even as his fans harrassed her online which he goaded, and which HE HIMSELF TALKED ABOUT in his 2020 "apology" -- but is now barely 3 years later acting like it was *only* in 2020 that people complained about his content and behaviour. A huge masterclass in peak white people tears.

I personally find Steve-o a really good interviewer with AT LEAST feigned compassion in situations where he clearly doesn’t believe what’s happening in front of him. That being said, he and the crew tend to press further on other people…and in this case, Shane couldn’t even be honest with himself when it came to the surface-level questions and it would be more of a waste of time since Shane would continue to be Shane and deflect and make a fat joke or something.

I was also gonna bring up the Aaron Carter interview. To me, this interview with Shane seemed very on brand, with a little less pushing than usual, but they probably did that after picking up on how nervous Shane was, or just being less familiar with him than their other guests. And in my opinion, this might be a step in the direction of Shane actually addressing things properly and giving a well thought out apology, and I'll be glad if that's the case.
I think Shane was very purposefully weaponizing his mental health by mentioning unaliving himself. Steve-O would have looked horrible if he dug into Shane after he talked about that. Just goes to show how skilled a manipulator Shane is smh.

What makes this horrendous podcast episode even worse is Steve-O did do his research. He began the podcast episode by saying he looked into Shane’s past and was stunned by what he found, to the point where he was questioning whether he should have Shane on at all. But, he ultimately decide to push on and interview Shane. So, Steve-O knew how gross Shane was, and still didn’t interrogate Shane’s lack of accountability.

@@guen4413 I mean, Steve-O literally asked Shane what he did to be canceled in the first couple of minutes of the pod. And Shane lied and downplayed what he did. Steve clearly didn't know who he was. Obviously, you can criticize the fact that he didn't do any research into Shane (although that may be left up to a team), but I doubt he knew he was bringing THAT onto the pod.
Every time he attempts to explain himself or apologize it feels very transparent that deep down he really _really_ doesn’t believe he did anything wrong (or, at the very least, not anything worse than what anyone else was doing at the time) and is inwardly seething that people won’t just forget and forgive him like they do with so many other problematic pseudo-celebrities. It will never happen for him because he lacks the charisma and social prowess, all he has is this infantile, hyper-empathetic crap which is never believable bc his sincerity always comes off as incredibly fake.

He atleast touched someone inappropriately, he literally made out with a child on camera and swapped gum with them. I consider that child a victim tbh she spoke out in 2020 on yt and said she was “uncomfortable” looking back and she said she felt “taken advantage of” kind of weird how the yt vid she made when she spoke out just disappeared. I think he silenced her, and I think there’s more victims he’s still silencing to this day.

I’m curious to hear others thoughts on this - I feel like a lot of us who grew up watching Shane Dawson as kids now have this feeling of having been in a way collectively groomed by him. He KNEW who the majority of his audience was and felt more than comfortable introducing and NORMALIZING absolutely disgusting abhorrent things that no adult should be discussing in such a crude manner with literal children. I remember once he changed his uploading schedule from Saturday’s to friday evenings because , in his words,”it’s better to have a new video to watch after school” so dude knew impressionable kids were watching him. And the whole contrived soft boy persona along with the fact he won’t even own up to all that he said and did in videos HE made and uploaded, feels sort of like gaslighting to those of us who did watch him all the time before we knew any better and distinctly remember how crude he used to be

I was never a fan of him, because it was a type of “humor” I didn’t find at all humorous, I think it’s called “farce” and I thought his racist Shanaynay shit was an insane abomination. Damn near demonic. And I saw how his type of “humor” contributed to what a lot of white kids thought about black people. It was a lot of “you’re my friend, you’re black but you’re not all ghetto and stuff” type energy. And how this thing and that thing were “ghetto”. And it was like, I’m the only black person you know, who are basing this ghetto thing on? Because the other black kids in our classes, not one of them acted anything like Shanaynay. Shane D wasn’t the only one doing shit to perpetuate these nasty racist attitudes, but he was one of them and one of the bigger ones at the time. He really helped made this black = ghetto thing mainstream. And then to be black and not ghetto meant you acted more white. Like you couldn’t just be a human who acts with respect and honor. This was bad even on my mind, messed with my self worth I’m not saying stereotypes are all completely made up, they come from somewhere, but typically they come from the worst or most extreme of a group of people. I wonder if he has any idea of the impact he really had on the impressionable kids who watched his videos and formed very real opinions based off his content. I remember how he used to parade around his one Black friend while also making racist skits with her in them as if that absolved him from how racist it was. He should take accountability for his past and take some sort of action to make things right. Him pretending like it never happened while complaining from his mansion about how hard his life is now…he has not grown as a person, he just knows you have to adapt to what people like to watch. i got the impression shane asked to be on the podcast and steveo didn't know much or really care what happened. he said he needed to look him up to know what the drama was. he and scott kept looking at shane like "wtf is this guy acting shy, not talking, when he asked to be here" and a lot of the "compassion" they showed felt like they were trying to be nice based around what shane said he wanted to get out of being there. ... it seemed like they were just throwing him a bone because he was a popular enough youtuber that might bring in some new views.

It’s moronic for him to even bring it up in the first place when none of the people who call out & critique Shane ever claimed that his bigoted content physically harmed anyone nor has anyone ever implied his bigoted content is somehow equivalent to sexual assault. No one demanded Shane to go to the electric chair for his sins. Can say from personal experience that Shane’s videos did cause physical harm. I had a friend in middle/high school who was a huge fan of Shane Dawson. Would listen to his podcast on repeat. She was constantly sexualized by older men and would engage in relationships with these men AS A CHILD. They used and abused her and gave her so much trauma. I firmly believe Shane’s content groomed her into thinking it was okay.

I never understand this...How can someone reach their perceived ultimate 'rock bottom' and NOT change??
