i don't think iv'e ever seen such an example of such a gentle man being put over the coals by a hostile questioner and coming out with such dignity at the end. There is an asshole here, but it isnt MrMacgowan.
Ock, you have to remember that the interviewer is representing The Plain People of Ireland, so he has to challenge Shane the way they would, ignoring all his positive qualities and focusing only on his shortcomings.
This is awfull really to watch , it's like the poor guy is on trial in front of the Irish people , he is a really sweet natured guy who just wants to be left alone with his problems , he is a genius and his songs will live forever .
ps3boiy I met Shane in my local offie some years back on the south circular road, we were both buying booze. I was just standing beside him at the counter and he looked at me and my booze and smiled with approval!
His parents are/were so sweet. Regardless of the interviewer seemingly putting him on trial, as someone put it, this is an incredibly candid interview and it’s given me the feels. Shane wears his heart on his sleeve.
Shane is a Legend. He outclassed his interviewr here. His Parents are brilliant as well. I'm so glad I seen Shane play many times. Every gig was class. Love the way Shane looks at his dad when he speaks. As his dad said,I just had a good time like Shane. Absolutely fucking brilliant 👏 👌
Pat tries to belittle him, why is the basis of this interview around drug use. This is uncomfortable watching in parts how he probs him about most things aside from music. Shane has more talent in his little finger than this middle class excuse for an interviewer had in his whole unremarkable career. He can see he is in a vulnerable place. Why not begin talking about his poetry, music and a long career of not only amazing lyrics but legendary music. The audience is behind Shane 100%. Love the response from the very dignified and well articulated parents.
I like how every question that Shane is asked,he becomes very still and it can appear that he's not got anything to say,but he's understood exactly what the question is and more importantly what the interviewer is trying to do. Shane is streets ahead of him,it's maybe partly to do with alcohol the slowness,I see a human being of great empathy and consideration and a wicked sense of humour..And then his mum and dad speaking and it just reinforces this. Blessings Shane♥️
Totally inappropriate and offensive. Yes, dear Shane has had more than his share of problems, but I am just so grateful he is still with us, I just love him. I am Irish American (half Irish, half Italian) been to Ireland 7 times. The first song I ever heard by the Pogues (80s) "Thousands are Sailing", I nearly freaked out it was so f'en beautiful. I knew nothing about Ireland, and had never heard of the Pogues. I had not heard Traditional Irish music, but I was into Punk. I went the next day and bought the album that the song was on. Became a huge fan of Shane and his band. Started going to Irish Pubs where there were Sessions, and began to study the History and culture of Ireland. I have visited Ireland 7 times and hope to go back when the Pandemic is over if that ever happens. I am 70 yrs. old with an adult grandchild. I would love to take him to Ireland, but it probably won't happen, but I took my youngest daughter twice and my son once. They loved every minute.
I don't like this at all , I think Shane has huge courage for going on a show like that . What a condescending asshole . Shane and his parents are pure class . He stands before the world as himself , period . Take it or leave it , his drug demons , his shortcomings , all for the world to see . You can see through his family where Shane gets his talent . His parents rock . God bless Shane and his family ... And thanks for all the music and culture !!
13:30 "I never comment on Shane's private life. There's so much more to comment upon." Well said, Mr MacGowan, and a gentle but direct message to Pat Kenny, the interviewer.
He’s a fucking dickhead that Pat Kenny he done the same with Pete Doherty all he’d talk about was his heroin use and Kate Moss after Pete had only just brought out a new album. Pete even goes to him can you even name one of my tunes and he goes no. Right knob
There’s something about him that tells me he’s got a damn good heart, unlike the idiots that make pathetic, nasty comments and think they’re so very funny!
I agree with you, you can see his humanity, a gentle loving soul with wonderful song writing abilities, yes we all know he's a drinker, but I suspect he's had his heart broken- and like a lot of the deep poetic souls, never quite recover.
MisAnnThorpe I have since spoken with Max about this matter. Upon putting it to him that Pat Kenny may be interested in interviewing him, he proceeded to lick his own ass and then walk away. I think that says all we need to know.
You need just to look in this great man's eyes to realize he is pure soul and integrity. He's a true treasure to all english speakers around the globe 🌎
Good on Shane and his folks for keepin it real and rising above this interviewer and his judgemental questions. Their genuine nature and good spirits shone through! 💖☘...when his dad said his talent comes from somewhere above, I would agree! 🍻
I remember thinking at the time of broadcast that Kenny was quite condescending to Shane in this interview. Watching it all these years later, I think it even more so. Pat is looking down his nose at Shane and poking insults at him throughout the broadcast. Disgusting. No respect for Shane, who outweighs Kenny a thousand times over in terms of talent!
***** I completely agree - his questions were both insulting and prying into Shane's personal life. Some of those questions could incriminate Shane. I don't like Kenny's moral attitude either..
+Patrick Grant Yeah, he's an asshole (Kenny that is).. He is desperately trying to fire questions at Shane from his imagined moral high ground, trying to disarm him in the process. It may take Shane a little longer to answer, as he considers his replies, but in terms of intellect and sheer brainpower, he's streets ahead of flat Pat Kenny... Horrible to watch.. Shame on you Pat Kenny...
Name one celebrity who isn't a cunt one way or another. He's well known for his musicianship , the rest is his private life , behind closed doors many famous people have a lot more hide. He's open about his short comings ; without bragging about it. Maybe you prefer Gary Glitter.
There's something very noble about Shane, he is all heart and pure honest. You couldn't but like him and yes, so talented. Talent doesn't go away. His parents, both mother and father, were epic here in his defense. Watch his Munich 1985 concert. He was sober and brilliant as leader of the band.
What could Shane have been without drink and drugs? Somebody else, and my life wouldn't have been enriched by somebody else so I'll take the Shane we got and be thankful. Id be proud to have had parents like Shane's, god love 'em, and Happy 60th mate!
i love this guy. no one in this world should be judged regarding their choices in life . You can see the man has wonderful parents, who love him and are non judgemental.Shane himself has the most incredible talent, but far more importantly it is obvious he is a lovely human being . and that will be his legacy...
You call him a "lovely human being"?!?!? This guy was an amazing poet but I wouldn't call a junkie and alcoholic a lovely human being. Never knew you knew him personally.
"no one should be judged regarding choices in life" that is the most stupid thing I have read. So a serial killers choice is to murder people but he shouldn't be judged for it because it was his choice?
Pat Kenny nearly spits the title "20th century Paddy" out on the floor. He doesn't represent the Irish people. Shane however is an artist. He finds the beauty in the suffering poverty of the Paddy and elevates him to nobility. I have loved his gentle heart for nearly 40 years.
I'm Portuguese but I have always loved you Irish, such beautiful people and such a strong culture and history. My dream is to visit Ireland but I am not a wealthy man, but one day I will see that land for myself. God Bless the Irish
❤❤❤that’s what makes him so special as his father said he thinks it’s something from up above so beautiful now they are representative of the real Irish people here ❤️
He is honest at least, more than most, Sinead may have had his best interest at heart, but he shouldnt have to answer to people for his personal proclivities. I still respect him without reserve, a true genius, one of the greatest song writers who ever drew breath, and a really good man underneath all the other stuff.
This is the first time I have seen this and the interviewer seems to be a one trick pony reiterating the same question again and again about Shane and his personal problems, he seems helbent on character assassination to Shane.Shane has his own problems but to do this is downright horrible. I do hope Shane one day finds a way to to beat his daemons. It's a bit like every interview steven adler has it is always his drug problems (which hopefully now in the past) but Shane gets defended by his father was heart warming proving that they bond together as a family.
This man is probably one of the greatest song writers we have ever known in Ireland but rte choose too disrespect him on his personal life. Respect the work he done
Me, swiss pogues-fan, am right now and for the first time in Dublin. Last night I heard two singer singing the wonderfull fairytale in NY (of course... it's xmas and temple inn) and so I wanted to listen the original and watched this interview. It wass very hard too watch, I hated this guy from TV and wondered why Shane is doing this. There is a lot of humiliation in his appearence but on the same way a real trueness a "he is what he is". And when his father spoke, I had to cry - I wish I can be a father to my chilren as he is - the mother as weil. My father was an alcohlic and I know that this is a Monster (adiction to alcohol) and still, I like to drink, I like to smoke and who knows where it ends? Would Shane had made the Music, if he would have been more carefull? All the other musical Genius? We dont know. But I thank god and the musicans for the wonderfull Music without the world would be empty.
I think this whole interview should be called “How Kenny got straight.” The beautiful thing about this interview is seeing his parents re-instill their son’s light through their humane brilliance.
At least with shane what you see is what you get ...Sinead o conner had a lovely voice but didn't want to be herself ,always trying to be something else . shane is the real deal
J Garvey Spot on. The man is an artist first n foremost and never asked or needed to be an advocate for 'responsibility.' Sinead o' connor has to play out her own personal bipolar activities in public for some reason. she needs to wind her neck in.
I would have thought if anything he would probably serve as a warning to young people against taking drink and drugs. He doesn't exactly make it look glamourous.
I've took a real interest in shane MacGowan and the pogues and his life and just everything and he has an amazing wife who has stuck by him through thick and thin for 34 years and loved him no matter what and shane is himself and amazing songwriter and he is genuine!
For 35 years this man has been the biggest influence in my life. The words inside him are the gifts that the world has received. A poet if ever there was one.
Shane is unfortunately a stereotype for rich, ignorant "celebrities" such as Pat Kenny to question blindly! Shane is in a league off is own when, it comes to talent, genius and proper sound guy! Which the forenamed will never experience! I don't feel sorry for Shane, I feel sorry for these mongs that are paid bucket loads of money to keep the public demine happy!
Well done to Shane on the way he managed this interview , everyone make mistakes and no one can say theyre perfect. The Macgowans are and always will be intelligent ordinary irish people. Rest in peace Shane and Teresa🥰
Shane was well within his rights to give it to this condescending, holier than thou prick, but he didn't, he remained even-tempered. Good man and a great lyricist and artist.
We fell in love with Shane because of his singing and song writing so we should only focus on that and not what he does in his private life. Legend he is and always will be, rock and roll can't take this man away from his fans. Fuck them all Shane you've done it as a true musician, thank you
Now I know why the great majority of sane people dislike America so much. When you good hearted American folk start World War 3,do not be surprised when you call on your so called allies and no one answers your call. You may get some support from Britain and Israel (only if they introduce conscription)America will be on her own.Europe,I can honestly say, will be against you.Remember that time you invaded a third world country using your state of the art weapons of mass destruction to kill hundreds of thousands of innocent brown people because you said those poor brown people had all these terrible ancient third world weapons of mass destruction and were going to magickly somehow attack America with them.Hmm,remember?Yeah man, yeah?,,,,,Well in case you didn't know, those poor brown people, those fathers and mothers who saw you blow up their children and those children who saw you blow up their parents will always remember what your brave soldiers did.America, you are on your own.You most definitely have to reap what you have sown.
true gentlemen of Ireland starved themselves to death for the chance to rid themselves of tyranee- by the day getting worse - hope the next world treats you half as well ye mad spoon xo
Whatever Shane can do , it is his private life and his personal business . For me he is a great singer , artist and person . I don't like people criticizing Shane for his addiction , I only wish for him he could stop or almost refrain them for his health . Love you Shane xxx
"I think everyone should live their lives the way they want to........There is no point in any regrets...." Shane sums it up nicely himself here when he is dealing with a really condescending Pat Kenny in this interview
My best gig ever, The pogues at Brixton academy. Half the crowd throwing shoes around the room then hobbling outside bare foot into two foot of snow.. Thank you Shane for a feckin great night.
At his core, I believe Shane to be a decent man, he has his demons, as we all do. It's taken its toll, as you can see. And for his partner Victoria to stick with him through it all, it must be love. And as for Kenny, this isn't an interview, it's a freaking interrogation.
Pandering Pat Kenny - what a gimp. How on earth did he manage to be in that job for so long? HIs attempt to patronize Shane showed the shortcomings of that entire Channel (RTE).
What I hate about interviewers like this is they're interested in hearing their own voice. Ask a question and let them fucking speak and you might find the answers you want. Not constantly trying to get a word in when they're explaining themselves.
What a train wreck of an interview. Pat Kenny, the host, is a fool and a miserable excuse for a humban being. MacGoan's parents, especially his da gave such a wonderful answer with such insight. It was the saveing grace of the video.
I think Shane may have a social anxiety disorder. After 15 years, this is what a national TV appearance looks like. It alsoExplains why he turned to drugs as a coping mechanism
Shane looks so hurt at some points during this. After all the questions his face just looked so hurt. Backstabbed. Like he realizes this guy got him on the show to drag him though the mud and regrets coming on the show
