The Sharp Twin Famicom is one of the best versions of the Japanese NES that you can get, as it has the Famicom and the disk system addon all combined into a single convenient package. We had already repaired this one for the Long Island Retro Gaming Expo but we wanted to make it even better. In this episode, we install Tim Worthington's NESRGB mod, which adds component video and RGB video to the Sharp Twin Famicom! A detailed installation guide is provided and we demonstrate the differences between composite and component video.

I really needed this video! I'm about to finally upgrade mine, so I can get to playing all those FDS and Famicom carts I've had for 10+ years. I just can't bring myself to play them until I get component or RGB out. Thanks man!

Very helpful video! Helped me figure out what I was doing wrong. I didn't read the instructions carefully enough to solder the jumpers and thankfully you covered it in your video and now my mod works great. Thanks!

Nice! They are really cool to own. You can also repurpose the 8 pin DIN connector for RGB on the twin Famicom. That way you don’t have to cut the shell and add an extra connector. That 8 pin DIN was used for RF on the twin Fami which is crazy!

What can I do about the Sharp Famicom's really short controllers? Is there a NES controller adapter or can I make it longer? Please help I can't find any info.

Have you done any updated mod to handle the expansion audio? I used your video to install my NESRGB with a personal no-cut twist but realize now that the expansion audio has known issues and ways to rectify it seems muddy. Would appreciate any insight.

Yes I have learned about a fix for the audio in the twin Famicom and you can find the details here: etim.net.au/nesrgb/installation-famicomtwin/

@@LIRetroGaming Yeah, I looked on his site and it only addresses the volume and the FDS audio distortion. Exp Audio itself is missing from the setup you did in the video. I tried Akumajou Densetsu (cart) and the audio is definitely missing a channel. Looks like I’ll be rerouting the audio to directly on the mono output to get it back per Tim’s original install.

i planned on removing the RF modulator and putting my din connector where it was... You can't put audio in the 8 pin mini-din connector?
@georgeportugal2169
@georgeportugal2169 4 года назад
What I did was cut all the RF traces that were going to the DIN connector and then sent RGB, composite, and audio to the DIN using the same pinout as a Genesis Model 1. This gave me RGB, composite, and audio using the original DIN. I ended up losing that portion of the footage, otherwise it would have been included in this video

Very easy to pull traces. Make sure to use plenty of Flux on both sides

Any help as you have repaired yours would be appreciated thanks in advance. @LIRetroGaming

The Famicom and NES do not produce stereo sound. You can generate a fake stereo sound by splitting the voices into two speakers but it makes some games sound very strange

you're losing expansion audio if you're just getting audio from pins 1&2 on the twin famicom
@LIRetroGaming
@LIRetroGaming Год назад
Expansion audio is built into the Sharp, so if you pull audio from the final output, the regular audio and expansion is already mixed
@UnbornApple
@UnbornApple Год назад
@@LIRetroGaming Yeah. Unfortunately the final audio output on the Twin Famicom is really quiet and crummy (at least on mine). There's an old Voultar post on the shmups forum where he describes how to hook up expansion/FDS audio into the NESRGB on the Twin Famicom. You can't have both connected at the same time, so you have to hook into the Twin Famicom's cart/FDS switch. But then you should get the nice NESRGB audio with expansion/FDS audio mixed in.
@UnbornApple
@UnbornApple Год назад
I was able to get the audio working how I wanted. I uploaded a quick video so other people can find it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QhbIu_NR5Rs.html

@@UnbornApple It's because some Twin Famicoms have some resistors swapped and in the wrong position. Tim Worthington has a fix for this issue on his NESRGB V4 instructions for the Twin. Mine sounds great after doing this fix. EDIT: It's not in the V4 instructions just in the standard NESRGB install instructions for the Twin.

I just realized, Imagine being abroad in japan during the FDS days and investing in the system and games, moving back to the US or Europe, and having a disk get corrupted. You wouldn't have had a way to fix it, I wonder how many got thrown out because of things like that

@damionmanuel9625
@damionmanuel9625 4 дня назад
@@dingusbingus7463 You can mod the FDS to allow disk writes and use the FDSStick to write whatever game you want to a disk. I did this with a stand alone FDS drive but I'm sure it's possible with the Twin as well. Just be warned that if you want other FDS systems to be able to read your written disks the writer disk drive must be very well tuned or only it will be able to read the disks. I tuned my modded drive with an o-scope to get the best possible results and both it and my twin can both read the re-written disks first pass, but if you don't have an o-scope that may be a challenge.
