Informative video, Robert! Thanks for sharing it! Wonder if you might have an opinion based on your brush restoration/alteration experience. Any opinion on the use of Simichrome Polish (which I have) vs Flitz (which I'd have to buy) to polish and buff a vintage brush handle to shiny, like-new brilliance? Thanks!

the best brush on the market today my Simpson Trafalgar's T-3 better then boar cheaper in the long run no break in, no need to soak it all day, ready to use, no weekly cleaning, no brush stand needed, easy on your face biggest brush at that price point .my I mic it its 29mm.' it's like buying a $275 badger hair brush, no cleaning the brush, no need for a brush stand, fast drying time, well not fall apart like a badger hair or boar can, cheap to buy, I have owned it for 5 years with no hair loss with no problems wheelchair Larry Merry Christmas

Great video. Do you have one showing how to dremel out the old button?
@RobertOrtiz1015
@RobertOrtiz1015 8 лет назад
I do not... Sorry... I use diagonal cutters to cut the hairs with a pulling motion. Sometimes it will take part and with luck all the knot out... Then i use the green dremel stone

What is that brush maker? KJ Works?

Nice informative video. I love synthetics, but Golden Nib is fairly limited on their selection. Would you know of a vendor that stocks more synthetic knots and more handle styles? My "perfect brush" would be a stubby synthetic with loads of backbone.

Is it correct that the size of the brush knot (bottom round part, glue that holds the hairs) should be 1mm smaller than the size of the brush handle hole or opening? For example, you should install a 24mm knot into a 25mm handle?
@RobertOrtiz1015
@RobertOrtiz1015 6 лет назад
rockotto4 yes indeed! That’s exactly what you want. Also remember that brush manufacturers are not as precise as we would like... the measurements usually can vary 1mm up or down... but space is also good so glue comes around to secure better the knot

If it is all possible, Yes. But if you have one that is mm too big... you can always slightly open up the mouth of the handle (I don't know about porcelain) with a dremel drum sander... and/or take down the knot slightly manually with very fine sand paper. I say manually because anything motorized could take to much off to fast.

Do not use gorilla glue. It expands as it cures and can mess up your depth or how level the knot is.

I have a cheap dremmel i bought for my wife for carving pumpkins... Works great... Only two speeds and aa battery needed but if you are dealing with ceramic or fragile materials is best to go slow that having it break! Trust me... I have broken some vintage handles that i wanted to punch someone i was so mad... Plus you can get cut... Ensure you are not overheating anything either... :)

How to remove knot from wooden handle
@RobertOrtiz1015
@RobertOrtiz1015 3 года назад
Thats a great question... its hard but you can do it. I snip the hairs off with some dikes and then use a dremmel pointy stone and clean the glue out... takes time and patience

Robert Ortiz. The knot?
@RobertOrtiz1015
@RobertOrtiz1015 6 лет назад
larry gray sr you dont want to trim the bottom of knot because thats hard glue holding all the individual whiskers... you can run the risk of having hairs come loose.... its easier to perhaps shape the hole with a dremmel... gently... if you need to make knot go higher you can always add a coin or something like that.

(the Golden Nib still exist, just to let people know) Now, I do a lot of turning projects and one of those is making brushes for friends and family for about 20 years. I would highly recommend using a long drying/curing epoxy. Something that takes about 12-24 hours. The longer the drying time the more elastic the adhesion. The shorter the more brittle. And since you are dealing with hot and cold with the water... you want something that is more elastic.
