The trick with drum brakes is to only take one side apart at a time, so if you get confused you can always look at the other side for reference......lol

Also after explaining that it only has 3rd gear, so downshifting to help slow this thing down is also not an option! 😂😂😂😂

I’m with Shawn. I’ve been a “square body” guy long before they were trendy enough to have that name😂 Ive had at least one at all times for over 20 years. I also prefer the round style with round lights and curved fenders. However I currently have an 89 K5, which is my favorite non round style from 81-91. The top is frequently off in good weather too.👍

“Drums are easy. As long as you have four hands.” Amen. Thankfully my Grandfather taught me how to do brakes and back then only the newer cars had discs and that was usually just on the front. But trucks were always drum brakes. And we never got to just buy new slave cylinders. We bought the rebuild kits and honed them out and put in new seals and such. Saved like ten bucks a side. But the Old Man was Depression Era raised and trained. He taught me so many tricks to save a buck and how to just get it done and running. I sure do miss him. It’s been 25 years. I can only imagine him hollering about modern computer cars.

I absolutely love the blazer. Everything about it. The wheels are amazing too. Sounds like the lock up converter is not unlocking and trans staying in high gear. If it is the lock up switch it's easy fix.

I had a 73 full top k5 when I was in my early 20's and I needed all the running gear for a nother project so I scrapped it. One of the biggest mistakes I've done I wish I had it back.

Don't get a more powerful bench grinder. You want to weaker one for doing small stuff like that brake adjuster. The more powerful one will rip that thing right out of your hands. You have the perfect one for that sort of stuff.

The old K5’s are my favorite and they have become grand theft money these days but what hasn’t with the old square bodies. My best friend had a 77 K5 4x4 rolling on 40’s when I first met him with a nasty 454 bbc but his ex wife ended up with that one. I miss running around in that thing.

I totally agree there should be a drain plug on the trans pan, but if you’ve had it off 3x on a vehicle you’re “never gonna sell”, you should’ve put one in. I guarantee if you put a plug in it, the trans would be just fine and you would never have to use the drain plug.

Also drive the K5 in reverse at a decent speed, like 6 or 9mph and press the brakes hard enough to come to a stop quickly. Do that a few times and the drum brakes will adjust themselves.

Love the interior. Very cool blazer. Had to fix the top of the bedsides on a 73 too. After I painted it I put clear rock guards "decals" on the tops of the bedside and glued rubber to the bottom of the cap instead of foam. Worked out really good.

Every time I get a new (to me) vehicle with drums I always get a complete new hardware kit for them. New springs and adjusters and other pieces for 50 bucks or so that covers both sides it totally worth it. Nothing like an old adjuster or weak spring to mess up during a drive and stuck on the road and have to re-do the shit again lol. just a thought.

If I remember correctly the best way to use the auto adjust for the early Chevrolet's was to put it in reverse and hit the brakes in rapid sucession while also holding the brakes pedal down at the same time just enough so that you are actually partially power braking the vehicle. That will make the star adjuster work. Just do it at a small amount at a time so you don't get them too tight.
@thehillbillyhermit7681
@thehillbillyhermit7681 Год назад
That's the way they were designed to work but.... manual adjustment thru the drum or the backing plate is the best way to get the proper and best adjustment. get them close after installing brakes, then hit the pedal a few times to center the shoes. then go back and check adjustment. Usually a few more clicks on the star wheel is needed. Should be properly adjusted after that. Over time and use, they might need a few manual clicks to keep them in adjustment.

That's an awesome daily driver. I have loved those from the time that GM first produced them. A teacher bought a white over green '68 K5. I first saw it in 12" of fresh snow, and more was falling. They actually closed school that day in the afternoon.
@billrichmond4922
@billrichmond4922 Год назад
That is a nice K5, the wheels and interior take it over the top. I have seen several K5's over the years with the same rust issues, those gaskets hold moisture and over time it just eats those bed rails. Gotta love a square body.
@joesample1818
@joesample1818 Год назад
The reason it doesn't shift when it's cold. It's the lip seals in the transmission. They have to heat up a little bit to expand it's Also controls the fluid flow

Loox like Chief Brody's car in the movie Jaws except it doesn't have white in between the upper & lower side molding trims. 1973 was the first year for those generation Chevy K5 Blazers, pickups, etc. They were produced up through 1991 except the plain cab pickups "half & three quarter ton models only" were finished in 1987, & the one ton plain cab pickups were finished in 1989.

He isn’t doing anything wrong. You can’t get all the fluid out by dropping the pan on any auto trans . You guys know that it’s the same in the race cars and you change fluid in them all the time I’m sure you have a pump to do it . Also that 460le will never hold up with Shawn’s foot in that Heavy K5 it definitely needs a 480 ! Enjoyed seeing you guys at the Va NPK last weekend!

I've owned a few different K5s from different years, and from what I've seen and read, the rust on the rails is a common point for the 73-75s. Never ran into that issue on newer K5s. Of course my 74 has rust in the rails, rockers (inner and outer), and surprisingly not too bad in the floor boards. I have a 6.0l and 4L85E waiting to go into mine..... or 454 with the Sniper..... haven't decided fully.
