As always iam gathering main information about topics you mentioned briefly here it’s Elizabeth Ann Whitney had been employed to teach at private school on banks of Leon river . This school was first Hamilton county following civil war . In 18 67 ( small log cabin)school was invaded by Comanche Indians and miss Whitney was massacre while protecting her students. Her heroism in giving her life to save children of warlene valley school .each year kids of Hamilton county pay tribute to frontier reached by carrying to grave and placing flowers around monument erected to her memory . Story began at p. M Thursday on July 1867 she saw number from men whom she took to be Indians coming down valley. She insisted that men must be cow men near by ranch who were expected by school. That day all kids take their seats . Power girl was not satisfied between logs of school building to peep through cracks until she was quiet sure men were Indians. She sprang from her seat , took her little brother by hand crawled through back window to escape. By this time Indians had to reached tree 300 yards in front of school house , where miss Whitney saddle horse was tied , had stopped they merely wanted to steal horse . Miss Whitney closed door , told kids to escape through window into brush in river bed below . All of kids succeed in getting through window except Lewis manning and his little sister . In few minutes indians had surrounded log house and one of their number red headed man spoke in English ( damn you , we have you now ). She read her fate in bloodthirsty eyes painted faces of savages. Although she didn’t lost her presence of mind . Heroic woman waiting orders to shoot pleading them to kill her , but to let kids alone . First volley of arrows fired through cracks of log of house filled her body with wounds . Last ounce of her fast falling strength in helping two girls out back window, getting boys under house . Through loose plank in floor. When Indians battered door down , entered building, Ann Whitney body obstructed door way . Best wishes for you your dearest ones .

Just because she spoke to the Indians in English doesn't mean they understood her.

If they were whites dressed as Indians, there has to be a reason why they would raid their own people. The reason might be that the whites were adults who had been captured as boys. If you review Susan and Gregory Michno's "A Fate Worse than Death," which is an encyclopedia of white captives, some boys enjoyed tribal life. Herman Lehmann is a good example of a boy who enjoyed being an Indian for nine years until he began to question himself. Finally, Quannah Parder himself told him that he should return to his family. During his years with the tribe, he rode by his own home a number of times (See - Nine Years Among the Indians). Also, nearly all Indians usually had someone among them who could understand and speak English well enough to understand a plea in English, which is understandable even without language.
