This was actually based on Hana Kimura's suicide, a very similar and tragic case that happened months before the chapter was aired. Unfortunately there was no Aqua to save her. Edit: some people were saying that some of the comments we see in this episode are actually taken word for word from the cyber bullying Hana received, which makes it even sadder imo
@BOLDcast

Yeah that's true I was being bullied in school, i didn't have any friends near my house, my parents scolded me every day like if my brother did something bad they also always blamed me and scolded me saying I was the reason he did that and the teachers were also rude to me while they were kind to every other student like this one time we were given homeworks and i didn't do 1 question so the teacher punished me by hitting my butt with a stick and forcing me to do 100 situps while other who didn't even do one question only got scolded and nothing more. This had been going on for 2 years so one day I was crossing a road at night and i suddenly started thinking 'im tired I just want to rest' I saw a car coming towards me and i stepped infront of it, but at the last second I decided I wanted to live (i still don't know why) and stepped away immediately but I was still hit in the leg by the car. Luckily the car wasn't going too fast and i went home limping, now i have a big scar on my right leg but now I'm doing fine physically and I'm alright mentally, i usually think of suicide but those are rare now. I used to think thinking about ending urself was normal but after 2 years i found out it wasn't Sorry if my English is bad it's my 3rd language

"It's so crazy how in touch with every aspect of everything the author is." And it's not just with the entertainment industry in ONK too. Akasaka-san is particularly in touch with what's happening in the real world in all his stories. From the relationship minefield and teenage anxiety that high schoolers have to navigate, to things that people experience on a daily basis like Twitter, and smartphones, to the reality of classroom and cyberbullying. I really love how you could pretty much say that the entirety of Oshi no Ko exists in Ai's shadow. She does in the very beginning, but literally everything in the story makes reference to her in some way or another. It really is amazing how overbearing her presence is even though she's long gone. And it's also incredible how well they were able to present her as such a legendary figure in the plot, it's just amazing that the image of Ai that I have in my head is just as idolized as it is for the characters.

Learning that this was based on a real-life situation really put into perspective how fucked up it is. When I first read the chapter I originally thought that the internet’s reaction was just a tad exaggerated, but then I read about Hana’s story and it really wasn’t. It’s basically 1:1, and it’s just so disheartening that not everyone has an Aqua to come save them. This is part of why some people think Akane’s best girl. She deserves so much better than what she got here.
@anonymanonymous

It's not exaggerated, such things happens way too often; for me it's weird that somebody didn't personally see yet something like that IRL? Like Delutaya (vtuber) jumped off a 7th floor after similar (somewhat worse) "online" bullying. (She survived the jump.)

The episode description on Hidive is so fitting for today. “Remember what you said in righteous outrage online? There were consequences. You never saw them, but that didn’t make them any less real, nor hold you any less accountable.” Your talking to actual people online. You don’t know them or what they’ve been through. If people would just pause and think about their own faults before pointing out other’s so many tragic incidents would be avoided.
@Johnithinuioian
@Johnithinuioian Год назад
Imagine thinking about your own faults and suffering over them before pointing out the faults of other people online, hoping that they suffer from their faults. That's one terrible thing, but now imagine that by doing that, you start believing that you're doing the right thing. It doesn't take long from there to lose your grip on reality and become trapped in a deluded reality. What's wrong must be right. What's right cannot be wrong. It also doesn't take long to return from that place when the consequences of your actions become apparent. I wonder then if you're more empathetic than before.

A lot of reality show drama are exaggerated or scripted events by the directors to draw in views. Remember Pimp My Ride? It was exposed later on how all of it was scripted. They aired it for views... unfortunately, Akane isn't the type to take a bad situation and turn it to her favor... it affected her badly and she almost took her life, sadly I wish Hana Kimura had an Aqua. Some people are able to take hate comments from "viewers" and turn it into their cash cow... other's can't. Akane is an hardworking actor who cannot freestyle. She can follow the script perfectly, but she can't act on a fly. A skill a lot doesn't have. Akane wouldn't be able to improv.... so a reality show is very bad for her to be in and that is the fault of her agency.

Btw, the reason they let it air is simply because: Its reality TV lol Legally, they have to cut when someone really does get hurt, but because its reality, they also have the right to keep in the part where they do get hurt in order to keep the realism going. Its like if a show has pretty dangerous live stunts like the Gibby falling from the ceiling stunt on iCarly. They have to Cut right after it happens, cuz someone really DID get hurt fr, but to keep the show going with something of substance or to simply not have to do it again, theyll leave in the part where the victim did get hurt; for better or worse lol

I'm using a translator, sorry. Sadly, a similar incident actually happened. Reality shows are really popular in Japan. In fact, I hear that the program side often gives instructions to the performers in order to liven up the show, and edits them so that the performers look bad. Since "no script" is a popular program, viewers mistakenly think that the performers are really doing what they say. There are a lot of slander that was actually in anime. Both the person who slandered and the TV side are crimes. Not only reality shows, but also the entertainment world has a lot of darkness, and sadly, there are many entertainers who die. Celebrities are glamorous, but behind the scenes they give up on many things and work hard... it's a sad world. They are human beings before being celebrities. I wish the world would be kinder.Awful but great episode.The cut of Akane's feet was impressive.

The worst part is that the show didn’t over exaggerate anything, this is the current state and environment of social media and networks in Japan. Everything shown in this episode is nothing but Japan’s reality.

Akane's got some really interesting growth after this. Obviously we get to see her build herself back up, but her relationship with Aqua and the places it goes are really unusual, and some of my favorite parts of the manga.

Akasaka "editor called me last night for playing Apex too much" Aka, a man whose storytelling prowess makes even the manliest man tesr up. He built a huge following with his previous works, then decided to make a piece on the Japanese entertainment industry and its worst sides. The actors/entertainers, the staff, the big-shots, the fans, and of course the haters, no one is safe from his criticisms. It's fascinating to know that this show is written by the same guy who, on stream, willingly barks for another female streamer. Btw, if any of gou guys are interested, nost of the stories we have from Aka-sensei comes from other streamers. He likes hanging out with other people and playing games with them. Very wholesome and funny guy.

It's interesting cuz I understand that reality shows and just showbiz overall center around perfection in a way that just eliminates any sense of humanity, but there was a part of me that, once I saw it was just a scratch on the cheek that wasn't even shedding blood after the dramatic execution that the anime took, I wished the director hadn't yelled cut. I know that in the spur of the moment, the scratch happens in an instant and you see the actress rubbing her cheek and you know somethings wrong so I can't blame the director for saying cut, but I also feel that things would've went better if the camera was left running and captured Akane's panic and then Yuki comforting her and hugging her (assuming she was to do that, knowing the cameras are still running). If that had happened, the showrunners could've got their damn headline moment and one that had conflicted reception as opposed to downright savagery toward Akane, if not uplifting and wholesome reception at the make-up. It made me think to more narrative acting, the type I'm much more familiar with as I've never watched a reality show or idol show, the type where an actor could literally trip and fall on screen and if they were to organically stay in character, the camera would still run. Harrison Ford broke his hand and the camera still ran because he did. Tom Cruise broke his ankle but finished the take. Heath Ledger's improv with the bomb scene has become a legendary part of cinematic history. Ofc this is in the realm of big budget action stuff, but even Aqua in the episode where he played the stalker, purposefully let himself get punched and played off of the pain and adrenaline to enhance his performance. It just goes to show that when the relationship between actor and fan is under the guise of being closer to reality, it necessitates a higher sense of perfection because young fans want something to connect with yet also idolize at the same time. But in narrative acting, the actor plays a character, not a person. The actor dresses up, does different make-up, gets ripped, scrawny, fat, etc, and takes on a different personality. So there's more of a disconnect. Ofc, negative fan response def still happens where actors play some scandalous or politically charged character and then get attacked for doing their job following a damn script (Daisy Ridley, Wyatt Russel, etc), but it it illustrates a different point from this reality show. I'm not saying the narrative acting industry is problem-free, as was explored with the more Kana-centric episodes (really baffled the show went the direction of her doing idol stuff). It's definitely just interesting overall having an anime which explores multiple areas of entertainment business. Aqua plays a villain in a narrative show and doesn't catch flack while also raising the shows quality by setting the stage for Kana's larger than life cry moment, but the moment something raw or imperfect happens on reality show, the director yells cut before any positive change can happen (where Yuki maturely and sincerely comforts Akane) and then the internet villainizes Akane to hell and back because they're arrogant enough to think they're seeing the full picture of these peoples lives.

18:38 *"Who is saying this?"* Real people that don't see people on the internet as real people, unfortunately. I've been seeing something very similar to this happen right now to a Vtuber I like. People calling them transphobic and making up some theories and weird mental profiles to justify their narrative. And even if a lot of people call them out they say stuff like "I'm not gonna listen to scum like you who don't give a sh&% about trans rights." like disagreeing with them on their harassment mean you are immediately against a cause. Anyway, I just thought I'd mention it because this is the part of the story that tackles that and they adapted it marvelously. Loving the anime :D

I feel like this episode not only encapsulates reality TV actors but also streamers. A lot of them claim that off stream personality is so different especially when they do something that could be looked down upon or that they aren't effected by hate but I think that is complete copium. I think the streamers who appear like divas or are assholes on stream are likely the same way off stream

usually stage actors are reasonably well trained with improv, since people can go off script if they forget their lines and the other actors need to respond to that (source: Lindsay is a trained stage actor) I think its more to do with just the super unnatural and curated image. Its not about being honest, or playing a character, its a weird inorganic middle ground.

Yuki's character was faking when she apologized........to keep an image with the production team, the starting scene kinda established how good she is at faking. She never really approached Ankane after that or check on her, pretty sure she must have seen the comments and stuff. Sadly people like Yuki exist and they really drag other people down for their own gain.

First of all, I haven't read the manga nor have I been spoiled, so please refrain from any "you obviously didn't read the manga" response. I hadn't commented on any Oshi no Ko video before because I felt it would be out of tune with the enthusiasm that many other users have for "the most popular series of the season", but I feel that I have to comment on this chapter because I think that there are few things that could have been done much better since previous chapters. Without digressing too much, I want to confess that, with this chapter, I have confirmed that Oshi no Ko doesn´t transmit to me the emotions that it tries to give with its characters or scenes. I said it in the Boldcast´s live stream two weeks ago, things like Ai is the worst character in the anime from my perspective or the excellent result of the scene in the drama where Aqua acted thanks to he insulting the actor in a low voice was something very convenient, but this series doesn't give me the sense of realism that it seeks on its events. This time, it seemed very unreal to me how Akane managed to scratch Sumi's face at the distance they were. I mean, wouldn't it have been more "realistic" if, in her desperation, Akane squeezed Sumi´s arm too hard until she hurt her or, in the worst case scenario, pushed her? I'll sound picky, but that threw me off balance and got my attention more than the rest of the scene. The only thing that could "save" this moment, for me, would be that Sumi set her up where she would make a mark on her face in order to make Akane look bad on public. Another thing was the end of the chapter, how Aqua got there in time to save Akane. I understand that they will explain it well in the next episode, but I feel like it would have had a stronger emotional impact if it was linked to the way Aqua's mother died. What do I mean by this? Before Oshi no Ko came out, I didn't believe the comments about "this series is too wholesome" because the irony came through. Therefore, I deduced that the mother would die (and she did), but that it would be due to suicide. What's more, during the first episode I expected that suicide plot twist as Ai's career couldn't take off and it made me think that maybe there were people looking to ruin her life. Although she was murdered and we have a mastermind behind it, my expectations were that many other powerful people in the show business were behind it (such as the conspiracy theories of the decline that are being considered of artists like Britney Spears). But well, my theory seems to be just a product of my imagination, although I think that in that way it would have given more drama to the series with Aqua not wanting another idol to go through those same events. Finally, if I wanted to share my opinion, it is not to discredit Oshi no Ko nor trying to discourage others from seeing it. I think it's still an interesting series that I'll continue to watch week by week, but definitely not with the same enthusiasm that perhaps I had at the beginning because, I repeat, I don't feel that it conveys the emotions that each character and scene wants to give me. For a series that seeks to realistically portray the world of idols, entertainment, the internet, and fandoom (and they do it very well with the consequences. The scenes of Akane being depressed and the hateful comments were very well done), I feel that resolting to forced actions as causes for it ends up taking me out of the immersion. Thanks for reading this long text XD Have a nice day. 😊
