Our friend Jan recently sent me a message on Instagram asking a really interesting Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training question.
She is using BJJ as a form a therapy for herself to overcome trauma that she experienced as a child.
The trauma was so bad that she was removed from her home at the young age of 13.
She says that she is using BJJ as a way to overcome the physical trauma she experience and to become more physically confident.
Here's the problem.
In the gi, she says the act of putting on the kimono seems to make things different and the grips help her out as she is a smaller woman.
But in the No Gi, she says that the situation is much different. The lack of the gi and pure physical one on one contact seems to trigger the anxiety and stress that she experienced as a child.
Her questions are. . .
Am I doing Brazilian Jiu-jitsu for the right reasons?
Should I avoid No Gi and stick to Gi for a while?
And how do I take on the fighter mentality and lose the victim mentality?
In the video I share some details about my younger life and one of the most traumatic experiences that led me to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Wrestling and Grappling in general.
I hope that this video helps you in some way!

This is some great advice. Thank you for taking the time to address this question. I was assaulted while out for a run around the block about 3 years into training BJJ. I was very fortunate to have had my BJJ background, because I was able to fight off my attacker. However, I was still traumatized and was hyperaware of my surroundings, as you described. The worst thing for me was when I'd suddenly realized that somebody was close behind me...maybe I'd be looking at an item on a shelf at the store and someone would walk behind me. My heart would race and I'd go into full on panic mode. Things like that are hard to overcome, but it's worth the time and effort because it enables us to live much fuller and balanced lives. I stopped training BJJ about 6 months after my attack. Now I'm getting back onto the mat 4.5 years later and while I am loving jiu-jitsu I find myself thinking about my attack more than I have in the past year or two. I got home from class last night and was replaying the events that happened that night. It used to make me feel valuable, but it also gives strong purpose to my training and makes me feel strong knowing that I have fought off a bigger stronger guy in a life or death situation. I hope that one day I can share my story with the guys at my new gym, but I'm waiting for the right time to open up about it. I love all of my teammates, and I think they deserve to know how much they give to me by being my training partners and helping me improve myself.

Coach is spot on. My wife was having the same problems. Just real shy and timid to begin with plus other issues she had going on. She would do great with drills and learning techniques but when it came to rolling she just couldn't do it. But she's started taking private lessons with one of the coaches and have found some classmates who will roll lighter with. She's not going all out yet (thankfully) but she's getting a lot better than she was when she started.

Making a friend in the gi classes and dragging them into no gi with you could be a great option to help get over this anxiety. It takes away the feeling of doing a strange new thing with strangers. Phasing into the class that way, as well as seeing how many techniques you already know do transfer into the new environment should help a lot.

I started jiu jitsu for numerous reasons. I didn’t like myself for one, I was overweight and i was depressed as all hell thinking i was coming to the end. Jiu Jitsu saved my life. Competing didn’t come into my mind until 8 months into training and now I train to win but the root reason is bjj is therapy.

Just watching your videos make me wish I was in your state just to learn from you. I've always been a shy and timid person and just the act of starting seems daunting. However, your kindness and open dedication not only to the art, but to everyone you teach is amazing and I wish I was a part of that. I've been into Judo and BJJ for a while and was always fascinated by it in comparison to other martial arts. Love watching videos of David vs Goliath matches where BJJ completely turns the tide of a fight. As for myself I am not in shape, far from it, and have no experience with any sort of athletics or martial art. Not sure what the point of this comment was, but I just wanted to say thank you for the awesome videos and being such a positive role model for even adults like myself.

Started BJJ training 12 weeks ago, and watching a your videos is really helping. I considered pulling out and putting it off until I've trained more, but the fear will likely keep growing until I do. Tommy B thanks for your advice man, it's a daunting process but I'm sure there's a lot to learn and be gained from it. What division / age group are you in? According to the comp entry beginner is for 0-1 year? So what you're saying is there's lots of dudes cheating the system? If so, that's pretty lame :/
@t-bone7988
@t-bone7988 6 лет назад
Yep for sure. I'm competing in the adults/ white belt 170 -185. I'm just saying that people especially coaches that enter in their guys into comps that they know are above that level hold them back just so they can win more trophies and medals for their academy. This type of activity doesn't happen with legit academies like ATOS, Riberio Jiu Jitsu, CTA and Alliance but instead the lesser know clubs. My understanding is they need the hardware to improve their credibility of their academy and show that their guys can win. You'll see less of it at the higher belts of course because the skill-gap is a lot thinner but at our level pretty commonplace. What about you fella?

Since I was a kid, I was always interested in wanting to take up some sort of martial art (I grew up in the 80s, the decade of the Karate Kid and 'drive in' Shaw Bros. movies); it wasn't until I was much older, when I read a piece on a woman who survived spousal abuse speaking to how important BJJ was, that it clicked. Having experienced sexual assaults, etc. throughout my life (including as a child) I wanted to maintain a means of defending myself, or just creating better awareness. Conversations like this are VERY important, especially in a male-dominated sport. While BJJ is a lot of fun, it really does assist you in getting out of various comfort zones. Pulling through that is the only way you're gonna get better at it, and learn more about yourself. Along the lines of this, I made the decision to enter my first tournament. I started jiu jitsu for a few reasons, but competing was not one of them. I look at it though, in terms of getting out of a comfort zone. It's scary, but it doesn't have to be. As you more or less said to the person who sent you the letter: the first step in getting over that fear is just getting out on the mat. That is a huge accomplishment.

He's absolutely right.You're much better off facing your fears in the gym where you're safe. If you're attacked on the street and you freeze up from fear, even if it's only for a few seconds, that's enough time for an attacker to do some real damage. Hopefully you're never in that situation but if you are being calm and confident will make an enormous impact on your ability to handle and defuse the situation.

A similar thing happened to me, when I was 10; a 14 year old punched me, broke my nose and stole a small amount of money from me. I'd met this person the day the assault happened but I didn't know him so when he hit me and there was blood everywhere suddenly I wasn't sure what had happened. We were in a wooded area, whilst I made my way home I thought he might have stabbed me and maybe would kill me. This might seem extreme but I had no idea what his intentions were. It affected me for 2/3 years afterwards. I went from playing out loads to staying in. It was only when I made new friends who invited me out that I was able to get over it.

Hey Chew, I've recently gotten really interested in starting my jiu jitsu journey. Your videos are amazing but I have one glaring concern. I wear glasses and without them I can barely see. It wasn't a major problem when I was in the Marines because I would just take them off whenever we sparred. However, my eyesight has degraded pretty significantly in the five years since my discharge. How much will poor eyesight hinder my training? Are there eyewear solutions you've come across or recommend for training? edit: I always had a problem with contact lenses when sweat got into my eyes. This is why I don't wear them.

I've seen guys wear glasses while they are watching techniques demoed, then take them off during drilling and rolling. I think you ought to give that approach a try. I'm assuming you can see general shapes if a person is close enough to you. For drilling and rolling the person is generally going to be pretty close to you, generally touching you, so you won't need to see much detail or from any distance. I've seen some pretty impressive BJJ folks at tournaments competing with missing limbs. While I've never seen any blind folks at tournaments, I imagine there have got to be a few advanced BJJ folks who are blind. There may be certain limitations (like a strong disadvantage with takedowns), but I suspect you'd be surprised by how much BJJ you can do by feel. If you're concerned, you can always speak to an instructor about it and see what he suggests.

Follow the blind grappler on insta.. he’s blind and dominates people. Maybe just loose the glasses 🤷‍♂️ In fact one of the guys in my class just looses the specs when sparring and he’s fine 👍 Give it a go and see how you get on 🤙

So I really wanted to do BJJ and went to a local club to try it out. So I really enjoyed the trained and it was fun, but a few things bothered me. - Both teachers are brown belts (Idk if that's bad or not), yet the trainer said that they have been giving trainings for over 12 years. I would think that by that time you would improve to a black belt, correct me if I'm wrong here, especially when you are giving trainings. - The trainer wasn't particularly good in explaining, and what he did seemed like he didn't go prepared to the training with a few things in mind to do on the trianing, so he thought of some techniques on the spot, which he in turn didn't explain very well. - All students were white belts and there were just 4 students, although he did that normally there are between 8 and 16 students. - There was no proper warming up (in my opinion). Just some stretch excersise. So to anyone taking the time reading this, am I a bit too harsh on the club and should I give it a shot? Or do you think they don't know what they are doing. I honestly don't know how it works in other clubs.
@enkhbileg
@enkhbileg 5 лет назад
Sorry i might be a bit late on this but there's nothing wrong with brown belts as instructors as long as they are training under a black belt at another school. And there is no set time you have to train to get a black belt. But if their training feels all over the place and has no structure I would be a little worried. My coach was a brown belt when I started and he had a solid understanding of how our bodies worked and was able to effectively explain and demonstrate why we do the drills that we rep. Hope it helps somewhat 👍

Hi Chewy, I recently broke my finger in a BJJ competition. The doctor says I need surgery and will have to stay off the mats for 6 weeks. What can I do for the next 6 weeks to retain my BJJ skills as much as possible, and stay in good shape (I am also unable to lift any weights until my finger heals)?

Maybe, the questioner needs to watch charmed. Of course, this is fiction, but it could help in the following areas. although it’s about witchcraft, and the Wiccan way, I hope it will help. There is a demon of fear, and all three sisters (piper, Peru, and Phoebe), face him and their fears. Paige Matthews also does the same thing later on in the series.

BJJ gives you the body and the tools. The body and the tools attract the hot crazy women. Crazy girl messes with your head. BJJ clears your head. It all comes back to the mats.

I feel the opposite of the question asker and am so uncomfortable in the gi, sweating and overheated to the point that I have a hard time focusing (felt cooler walking outside into 101deg F than wearing a gi in class today.) but my gym does not offer no gi until you reach intermediate level (3 or 4 stripe white belt minimum). As a solid white, it sucks ass but it is my fear to overcome. I spent 3 hours this morning convincing myself to go to class instead of bail. "fear is human, everyone is afraid of something" take it to heart.
