@@Blackmjc you are true, but y je another person too, the song have many meanings, when Layne dinner with discography producers, they talk to him about why they were vegetarian, about macro farm, so, Layne used that symbolism also for the song, that’s why they included animals confined to the farm. Also, when he sing about Jesus and the Jerry sing the opposite, is about drugs, Layne wrote this song very stoned, and he has a drug problem, RIP.

In 2019 my husband suffered a massive stroke, and now I’m his caregiver, now that he is home, he is discovering music too. I show him all kinds of groups from the 50’s-1990’s. He actually likes run dmc, so that rap music he likes. My husband loves watching Ambers reactions. He says she is so genuine. Thank you for making a 67 year old happy

That’s so sweet. My health has also failed, I’m 45 now. And my wife takes care of me also. We as men cannot tell you how much we adore and love you women for taking care of us and loving us. It means the world. I can tell you that your husband loves and appreciates all that you do, but he probably adores the time you both spend just listening to music and finding new music. Rooster is an awesome song by Alice in Chains. If I remember correctly, it's about his dad in Vietnam. Amber seems surprised to like Alt Rock/Grunge! LOL! Alt Rock has so many sub-genres, it's my favourite, along with Indie Rock. So much for you guys to explore in this genre, all from the 90s onward. :)

Layne and kurt knew each other , layne actually passed 8 years exactly to the day of Kurt's passing. In my opinion they are the founders of the grunge sound and since they both passed the grunge era/ sound died with them. 💔

You guys ain't remembering Luca in vitro was listening to some of the best music that ever been recorded you dig what I'm saying. This little cat is going to come out of the womb with a library in his little head and trust me as young as they are small children remember very important things such as music which is very important to an in vitro child. Mama get yourself a set of old school headphones and plays system and just kind of take it to headphones spread apart and put them on your tummy and watch his reaction!

The effects on the guitar, and the beginning vocals are done with a "wah pedal". It opens and closes the sound of the instrument or voice using a pedal, so it can be timed exactly how you want it. Definitely a #1 tool for guitar players.

That guitar effect is made by a "wah pedal", sometimes called a "wah-wah" after the sound it makes. It's been in use since the Sixties, and Hendrix was famous for using a "Cry Baby" wah pedal. The player controls the sound with his foot.

You need to listen to the uncensored version. He doesn't say "shove my nose in spit". No. Just no. This is a dark song, but so thought provoking and the very epitome of grunge. "Rooster" is a must listen. Layne had a sad and all-too-typical rock-n-roll life. He flamed out fast. Blind Melon is similar "No Rain" is great, and with an equally tragically talented front man Shannon Hoon.

The thing I love about Layne's vocal delivery in this song, is the way he drives home the high notes of the chorus. It has so much clarity, but also emotional conviction in its delivery. On a side note - congrats on the new addition to your family!

What you're hearing on the guitar is that it's fed through "wah" distortion. It's such a distinct sound (or maybe they're feeding it through a talk-box at points, as well; I've noticed wah and talkbox sound close to each other quite often). Jimi Hendrix is probably the prophet of "wah" in rock, because he showed what you could do with it in a way that spawned millions of imitators.

I think the most forgotten voice of grunge is also the most prolific ...The legendary Mark Lanegan (Solo, Screaming Trees, Queens of the Stone Age, Mad Season, Gutter Twins ). Then again he was best friends with Layne, turned Kurt on to blues & david bowie, Chris Cornell produced his first solo album, Partnering with rehab buddy Mike McCready from pearl Jam for Mad Season and being saved from homelessness from Duff McKagan from guns and roses. Mark Lanegan voice is definitely one of the best from the grunge scene

I saw Alice in Chains eight after I got back from the Marine Corps. I saw them in Springfield MO. They did 4 songs before leaving the stage since they were so high they could not continue. I have to say that Lane's voice is recording quality when he is live unlike a lot of artists. They are my favorite bank ever. I was so devastated when Layne Staley passed away for an heroin overdose. The world lost a great artist that day! I still love all their albums but my favorite is Jar of Flies.

I literally used to listen to this song when I was around 9 years old, and I loved it at that age and still love it at the age of 28. Layne Staley got this once lonely Creole girl from Compton CA through a lot of things and I’m so glad I know their music and grew up with it 💕. The beginning of the song the guitar is played with a voice box that goes along with the guitar and voice. And the guitar is using a peddle a wag wah which adds or takes away lows and highs. Then Jerry is PALM MUTING AND MUTING THE STRINGS IN DIFFERENT INTERVALS.. to mimic the vocals.. it’s PURE GENESIS

The main sound you're hearing on the guitar is a Wah pedal. It's a guitar effect. It also sounds like a Talkbox is synced with it. It's a cool sound for sure. Congrats on the baby!

I’m def late to the party, but I was scrolling to see if anyone hooked em up with the answer. When I play this I use the Wah only, but it’s only cuz paying for a talk box and a mix and all that seems extreme for the few songs I like that use it.

The message of the song is the conflict of faith: the man in the box - he feels like his future is predestined. Lane sings about saving his eyes (chorus: "Can you sew them shut?"); cries out to Jesus Christ (chorus: "Deny your Maker!"); Lane: he who tries (chorus: "Will be wasted."). The struggle of humanity - and the video implies that, in the end, faith loses. Very cathartic. Lesson: regardless of the challenges put in front of us, we must always strive to become saints. Not sure that is the message Lane & Co. wanted to project in the video, but it's what I take from it. We are failed beings, but in most cases the greatest impediment to our redemption lurks within us.

Lane Staley wrote this song inspired by his dad who was an American prisoner of war in Vietnam. His dad was tortured and actually kept in a box that was buried in the ground for punishments. Pretty heavy stuff. Cheers!

Layne Staley's grandma was our librarian at North Mason High School in Belfair Washington state back in 1992-1994. I got to see pictures of him and his family that she showed me. I thought that was so awesome and amazing!!!!! I will never forget that!!!!

Guitarist is from our great state of Oklahoma which is where his dad "The Rooster" still lives. Saw them in Durante and his dad came up on the stage and hugged him. So incredible

Love your guys' enthusiasm about one of my fave bands of all times. I saw them play in a tiny tiny venue in Hollywood a long time ago, and they are so awesome to see not only live, but way up close because the venue was so small. It was like watching them play in some baller guy's pimped out garage. LOL Man In A Box is a classic AIC song and was psyched you guys chose to react to it. Great comments you guys weaved in throughout the video. Keep grindin!!

That is the "wah wah effect on guitar. I love how much you have grown! It wasn't that long ago you said you weren't a big rock fan. Now you seem to enjoy the harder riffs and appreciate the more complex nuances a live instrumentation.

My brother-in-law, Alvin Ray Carney could sing & play this song perfectly. He was killed in a hit & run in Houston, TX on Thanksgiving 2005. R.I.P. He loved Alice in Chains. We are from Hobart, OK.

Dude, you can't imagine the fire and energy there was at the beach as this song was blasting out of the speakers of the beach bar at camp pendleton back in 1991!!! I remember that time as a kid. All the marines were turned up when this was on. it was a badass time. RHCP's "suck my kiss" was also freshly out back then... rock music in the early 90s was so raw and innovative back then. You couldn't resist it when you heard it back then.

The effect on the guitar is from a "talkbox". The sound of the guitar is fed through a tube that can be manipulated by the mouth, so that the guitar sounds like a voice. It's featured on Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way" and Peter Frampton's "Do You Feel Like We Do"...

Layne's voice was unique in the way his voice reverberates an octave below or above where he is actually singing depending on if he goes high or low. It gives of a natural distortion that creates the "magic" that people hear and feel and you just cant buy that no matter the quality of vocal coach or how much money you throw at them

The guitar technique is actually two techniques put together. Jerry Cantrell is alternating between “palm muting” and open strings while using a Wah Pedal to create the “wah-wah” sound. The result of the Wah Pedal is similar to taking the Bass and Treble knobs on your equalizer from 0 to 10 and back to 0 again really quickly. The short “thumpy” notes are the result of Palm Muting which is where the guitarists strumming hand slightly lays on the strings so the notes play but do not ring out.

Wait till you get a song with the harmonies between Layne and Jerry. My personal opinion is not to listen to "Nutshell" until you have a decent grasp of the band. It is very haunting and more of an ending than a beginning.
