In this video I Solo sail my 31 ft Hunter Sailboat to a new harbor! I back it out of the slip, get the sails up, set up a fishing line, and head to Newport Beach! Once I arrive in Newport I drop the sails and make my way to the anchorage area which is FULL OF BOATS! I circled it and found a spot and then solo anchored for the first time in a new harbor! It was STRESSFUL but I did it! I stayed on the hook overnight and the next morning I caught a shovel nose ray! After hanging out in Newport for a bit I sail home and unfortunately didn't have much wind. Once I get back to dana you can watch me SOLO dock my boat! Make sure to Subscribe to follow me on my journey! In the next video I will be sailing to Catalina Island! Thank you for watching! if you made it to the bottom of the description, please leave me a comment and let me know because I will respond to you!

Thanks for sharing your adventures with us Christa, I really like to watch videos from people who are starting or learning like me. I can definitely identify myself in some of those situations and also the feelings. Especially, when approaching the destination, there's always a bit of anxiety with whatever may happen. However, if I may... there are a couple of observations/suggestions I would like to do. I normally prepare everything I can, when still docked. For instance, removing the main cover, attach the main halyard and, everything else that can be done with the boat still on the dock. The only thing I leave in place are the fenders. Although, I could take them out, something may happen between the dock and the sailing ground so, better to leave them there. The second suggestion is when arriving to your destination, whether is an anchorage, a mooring buoy or a dock, prepare your things in advance. If I would be you in this case, I would have prepared my anchor before arriving to the anchoring spot. And by that I mean, put your anchor already a bit above water level, that way, when you find the right spot, you just drop it on the water and loose less time. In the video, I could see the boat swinging while you were preparing the ground tackle. Anyways... this is how I operate and in the short time I own a boat, it has been very helpful and stress free. Keep going and continue to share more videos with us! Pedro (SV Tulip)

Christa, you should acquire a pole for your jib or a spinnaker pole to pole out the jib and keep it from flapping. Wing on wing sailing can get you more speed. You might want look into a asymmetrical spinnaker (cruising spinnaker) also. Keep cruising, you are doing great.
@CaptainChrista

I wanted to share a few things after watching a couple of your videos. Diesel engines don't have a choke. That is the stop/run switch that pulls out. That is how you are supposed to stop the engine as it typically shuts off the diesel fuel pump or turns it on depending on the position. Also when towing the dinghy make sure you have floating line/rope or it is likely you might pull a non floating rope into the prop and stop the engine from functioning because the rope will wind up on the prop. The only way you will go again is to cut it off the prop from under the boat...so make sure you have the type of rope that floats.
@CaptainChrista
@CaptainChrista Год назад
Yes it’s what stops the boat I guess I just call it the choke instead of the stop pull or stop switch idk what to call it! it’s how to stop the boat when on (taking the key out will leave the boat running) and I push it in to start the boat because it allows the fuel to flow. Thank you! I appreciate the time you took to explain this to me!

@pken9814 Год назад
@@CaptainChrista It seems that 40 to 45ft is that magic size of not to big but big enough to have room. While also not being so big that it's to expensive to maintain and the projects are to big to do yourself. Im torn on wether to go with power or sail. Sadly I never learned to sail while my grandfather was alive and had a small sailboat. I learned everything else from him on his 38ft wood boat.

Hey Christal. Nice job on learning to sail and vid production is nice too. One issue you might want to look into regarding the boat. I noticed that you seem to have trouble raising the mains'l. Of course on larger yachts it requires more effort and energy but on a 31 foot boat it should not be that difficult. I fear that there is something binding somewhere in the system. Could be up at the masthead sheave (pulley) but could also be elsewhere in the system as I notice you have an internal main halyard as well as blocks that lead the halyard back to the cockpit. it seem you are able to raise the sail OK but with lots of help from the winch. The issue may become critical if the binding that is causing extra effort to raise the sail eventually becomes something that will not allow you to lower the sail and you may find yourself in high winds wanting to reef or completely lower the sail. Just a thought. Not looking to be critical; just help. Cheers.

Liked your video and your enthusiasm, please take this as constructive criticism ( please wear a harness and a life jacket when sailing alone if you leave the cockpit) you have only yourself to get back on the boat and if it’s moving your struggles to get back aboard will wear you out in a few minutes... Also the items that you are calling buoys are called fenders... Really enjoyed your enthusiasm for sailing the most...
