Sailing Alone and Anchoring A Sailboat!

I have a few trips coming up that I am very excited for! Im planning on sailing to a few places including Newport, Catalina, possibly Long Beach, and more! before I set sail on these trips I need to make sure that everything on my boat works and I don’t need to make any major repairs or anything besides minor maintenance. What better place to test out some of the systems on my boat than on the hook? So in this video I get the boat, ready and back out of my slip for the very first time. My mom also stop by to see me off. I’m getting really good at using the drone so I launched it, got the boat ready, and then I go to the sandbar Anchorage and solo anchor. Then I test out a bunch of systems and set up my solar panels that I haven’t used since last year. I found an issue in my battery compartment with the solar panel charger that I definitely have to fix before I go on the trips. I show you guys a couple cool things on my boat, make some very boring food, and then pack up everything and head back to the dock. I’m not used to going into the slip so docking was a little rough and definitely did not go how I wanted it to but practice makes perfect. Next time will hopefully go better! I’m really looking forward to my upcoming trips. If you made it to the bottom of the description, please leave me a comment and let me know because I will respond to you!

50" in 18' of depth is probable fine for day anchor without wind but try to do at least 5:1 for over night. That would be at least 100' feet of chain. Personally I do at least 6:1 up to 10:1. I do not know how much chain you have but it does limit the depths you can anchor in. I learned the hard way unfortunately and now I carry 450' of rode. I am very impressed with the drone skills! Also you should permanently mount the solar. The MPPT controller does a great job maintaining the battery and if you every get disconnected from dock power the solar will keep up. Great video and I love to see you practicing it is a good strategy!

That portable stove you have is a great little stove fair warning now I just burnt my leg last week because I had a small saucepan filled with oil and garlic and when I placed it on and turned because it's so small the burner wasn't wide enough to keep it from tilting and falling off so make sure you use large pans on that particular unit or be very careful using smaller pans on that unit because it will fall through the space😮😮😮

You're perfectly good there with two to one on your anchor but when you anchor up at Catalina or any of the islands hopefully you have a 100 ft of chain and put it all out if you anchor deeper than 40 ft make sure you put some rope out to this is advice from a guy that has worked most of his life as a commercial fisherman anchored out at the Channel Islands don't be shy and letting all your chain out hopefully you got at least 100 ft of chain and at least a 35 lb anchor I prefer the Bruce. One last piece of advice don't anchor in the rocks no matter what type of anchor you have. Good job on your video and all the things you were doing at once.🎉

Hello Captain Christa, nice to see you out on the water doing the proper checks before heading out onto the blue. 7:26 I noticed the plug for your solar panel is not on a sealed connector and that can be bad. The best way to keep your batteries charged is for this to be working any time the engine is not running and the sun is up. These connectors should be sealed/ weather proof connectors because salt water will mess them up, as a minimum I suggest you fill the outlet with dielectric grease and make sure the plug connectors are greased before plugging them in.

Good video. I was complementing a RU-vid sailor that I was learning from when someone said "he's only been doing this for a year." He's also a surgeon and a chef.. so clearly he knows how to learn. What I figured out is he is very deliberate, step by step, which is why I found him so helpful. You're deliberate. Even though you're still new, you aren't doing what too many RU-vidrs do mug for the camera and go over their shortcomings and only half figure things out in front of the camera. Mostly just a waste of time. So well done; I've only got a couple of years myself. What I learned about anchoring is it's not so much the length of rode we let out, it's the ratio. Of course we still have to know how much chain. There are numerous anchor chain marking systems. I didn't like any of them. (Stare at a hundred feet of chain looking for three red plastic cable ties.... ) The one I thought was great was from Jon, with whom we just sailed across the Pacific. It uses cheap poly or nylon rope. There are color schemes and mnemonics. I use the color spectrum ROY G BIV Red, Yellow, Green, Blue then Red for 0' 25'(Y), 50'(G), 75' (B), and 100'(R) [Orange is used if you're doing meters 0m (R), 10m (O), 20m (Y), 30m (G), 40m (B), 50m (R). Red at 0' because on the catamaran we sailed when the anchor came up, it seemed really fast. So we liked to see a red so we'd slow down. ] I have 200' of anchor chain then 200' of 3 strand nylon. I marked that with the color electrical tape you can find at any ACE Hardware. I made a spread sheet chart, printed it out, highlighted the colors, laminated it and stuck it inside my anchor locker cover. (It won't fade because it's in the light only when I'm anchoring.) The chart shows the lengths and the scope ratio. So your depth gauge reads 14', you look at the chart for 5:1 ...15' (close enough) that's 75', Blue, so you let out chain until you see blue. Done. The way the chain is marked is 6' of the color rope is woven through the links. It doesn't interfere with the anchor moving through the gypsy gear, it doesn't fall out. (I tied a couple of knots at the ends just to see if they help in anyway) and most importantly, you can't miss it. I shared the chart on Facebook Hunter Sailboat Owners. No idea how to find it, it's simple enough if anyone is interested. (Also I'm just up in Los Angeles, (keep my boat in Oxnard), if you'd like to do this for your chain, I've got plenty of rope left. I can cut some and send it to you. ) You could probably make a helpful video setting this up on your chain. I've never seen a video on this.

First time watching your channel. Exceptionally beautiful young Woman. I just watched a video from Outdoor chef. He stopped in San Francisco and picked up solar panels that can output quite well even if you have shade going over part of your panel. Taku is his name and you can find his channel with the new solar panels. Might want to check them out because shade across the panels from the boom is common... maybe they will help you.

Great testing of your systems. The only comment I would make is, and I may have missed it, is that you let me he boat drift back onto your anchor then put the boat into reverse and pull back on the anchor chain at about half revs and that should help set the anchor. Enjoy your boat and have the best time sailing. Have calm seas and fair winds. You are doing well keep it up. All the way from Australia.

You can check to see if your Bimini solar panel is putting out voltage by using a multimeter on the end connectors set to a high voltage. If the meter has 100v dc then that would be ideal. Try it on a battery to make sure you set it correctly. Those flex panels go bad so quickly. I would recommend some hard panels on your railings by the stern seats. Also paint your chain with the rybwg acronym so as to know how much chain you have out. It's rub your balls with grease...red yellow blue white green I think. The anchor depth is depth under your keel plus the height from the depth sender to the top of your deck...so 18 feet on the depth finder might actually be 25 considering that circumstance. So a 7 to 1 anchoring situation would mean seven lengths of 25 or 150 feet. 50 feet of chain is a 2:1 anchoring...which with people really close I wouldn't go less than 5:1 and you've got to be careful of swing. If you were leaving your boat 2:1 won't work at all.

Hello my friend. Is that a public anchorage for multiple nights? Do you have to reserve a spot if traveling? Where is it? Thanks for the info. Might be too late for this fix, but consider using epoxy to bond some wood to the hull for the charge controller to screw into. West Systems Six10 from West Marine is a good choice. Fits a standard caulking gun. Squeeze amount needed onto a piece of scrap, mix with a putty knife, apply to one side of wood, press onto hull where you want it, and tape to hold in place for 24 hours. FYI they sell a mixing tip for the Six10, but they’re a bear to squeeze the epoxy thru.
