Bending over a lathe oh! yes that's a great way to get backache. Coming on nicely isn't it.

I,ve a Myford Super7 Craig I use a rear parting tool with inserts works pretty well as long as take it easy feeding parting tool in. I waste hours machining things for my motorbikes/cars but like feeling of accomplishment. That was nice bit of machining.

This is a beautiful build...........the combination of the different black textures set against the shiny silver bits just looks amazing.😎

Aluminum is very common today, I made a lot of stuff out of scrap. Aluminum, I melted down and cooled in a piece of steel pipe I had cut length wise and wired back together. I used beeswax to flux it. I carbon coated the inside with a carbon rich flame prevent abrasion. You can use casting sand without a metal shape to form your slugs of aluminum . I was 40 miles away from town, so i just used common sand to hole my metal form from pipe. Normally it only took about an hour to melt poor and cool , never had to wait for aluminum to come in the mail. Even made some decorative horseshoes in a pinch.

Craig You had a fair amount of stick out from the chuck jaws , suggest you centre drill and use a dead or revolving centre to support the job. Loving the videos.

I think a cooling ring would spoil the very neat job you've done there. But, as you say, it's on its way, so see what it looks like...

Parting off on a Myford can be frustrating at times. Make sure all your Gibs are tight and your carriage lock actually works. I've found a thin HSS blade on a rear mounted tool post works well with slow speeds and plenty of lube.

Using a duck board to stand whilst working on the lathe will reduce your fatigue. Supporting the job with a rolling centre is a good idea. To clean up the inside after boring use emery paper. So far you you have surpassed yourself, outstanding, is a good description.

😅Hi Craig, Hope you dont mind a couple of suggestions? 1) A bespoke exhaust clamp would be great _ uniique ( made from the spare bit of aluminium bar?) 2) Wiring is a pain through the frame. Do you have space in the frame tube for a piece of fuel line,? If yes, then thread several strands of fishing line ( for the number of wires required) through the fuel line, then pass the fuel line through the frame. Secure the bunch of fishing line at one end, and slide ths fuel line out. You then have an easy way to pull the wiring through. Hope this helps with a time consuming and frustrating job. Rgds Mike N

Beautiful job Craig. I cannot do parting either. I've heard that running in reverse, with the tool flipped over works. However, my old lathe has a screw on chuck, so can't do that. For the Aluminium stock, check out an Aussie bloke who has a channel called 'Xynudu'. He has used some quick and simple methods for casting Aluminium from scrap. Saves himself a fortune!

Even if this will be a day for bimbles on sunny Sundays I would worry about the aluminium getting molten by the exhaust heat, to be honest.

Craig, I struggled with parting until I set up my lathe to part in reverse. It changes the game to flip the tool and reverse the drive. You can find explanations online for how it works. Some lathes may have an issue with chucks unscrewing themselves so be cautious if you proceed. Cheeers from California!
@Paul-FrancisB
@Paul-FrancisB 2 месяца назад
The myford has a threaded chuck so reversing the spindle would be more of a disaster if the blade snagged. However is a rear toolpost that mounts to the slots in the cross slide that has a similar effect to make parting much less exciting

So the cylinder is made of iron, the exhaust is made of steel and adapter bit is made of aluminum? What happens when it heats up? Also do the metals get along with each other long term? Corrosion wise etc. ? will they remain happily married or is divorce on the cards?

@@bananabrooks3836 the cylinder head is aluminium (like most modern engines) that the insert is going into so not dissimilar metals and you are mistaken it is used in some exhaust systems, the silencer that Craig removed a dent from in the last video had an aluminium shell for example, not uncommon when trying to save weight on things like motocross bikes.
