Sheep on Grass

I'm busy with my fencing project but it is a beautiful sunny day (a rarity in our region this season) and I felt compelled to get the sheep out on pasture to enjoy the lush grass fertilized by our small lamb flock from last year.
It's amazing how much nicer the grass looks compared to last year after just one season of grazing.
Our Akbash livestock guardian dog, Blue, and our guardian llama, Penny, also gets out on pasture to enjoy the sun and the nice grass while our pregnant American Guinea Hogs look on the pasture longingly.

Just out of curiosity, why aren't you running you pigs in your woods where it's cooler than in the pasture? What I mean is, do you have a specific task that you are trying to accomplish by the pigs? Perhaps you answer that in another video, I'm trying to catch up. I always love seeing animals on fresh grass. Thanks for the video!
@TheGrassfedHomestead
@TheGrassfedHomestead 7 лет назад
They're not in the woods because the bracken fern. I have a small wooded area that I'm probably going to move them to that does NOT have the bracken, but I'm waiting to see if any pop up to be sure

How small of a winter paddock are they kept on and do you just use hay over winter? I have a 2 acres pasture and 10 sheep. I am trying to figure out a good system for them. Thank you.

@candicechristensen1753

Ok so we recently helped a friend get their hay in. They informed us that the grass hay was for their horses and that sheep won't eat grass hay and that you need alfalfa for them. I was in no position to argue but from the information I've gathered this is false and sheep do very well on grass hay. Please clear this up for me.
@TheGrassfedHomestead
@TheGrassfedHomestead 7 лет назад
yes, sheep eat grass hay. It is good for growing lambs and pregnant/lactating ewes to have some alfalfa (or other legume) for a boost in protein. In addition to the pasture, I'm giving my sheep grass hay and they love it.

Part of that is just the breed. Part of it is adjusting to his new home - he left everything he knew, everyone he loved, and now has to learn to trust his new home and family. He has no idea why he was sent away, and cannot be sure he isn't going to leave the new place, either. It takes time. LB will help just by being a young, affectionate boy.

Hi I have an urgent question. I live on a farm with many sheep but our grass has been highly depleted and short so im worries that they ain't got enough food. Should I keep them in my second pasture and feed them hay to let the other grass grow or what?

I could use a sheep or two here in the city. There has been so much rain my grass is out of control. Glad to see that everyone is doing well on the homestead. What is the gestation time frame for pigs and will you need separate shelters for each momma and piglets? LB is such a great helper.
@TheGrassfedHomestead
@TheGrassfedHomestead 7 лет назад
gestation is 3 months 3 weeks and 3 days. It would be best to separate the sow and her piglets but I'm still trying to figure out how to do that.

I love watching these videos about blue. Do you have any idea if a dog like blue could be good for protecting hens?
@TheGrassfedHomestead
@TheGrassfedHomestead 6 лет назад
I don't know that they'd bond with chickens like they do with sheep but I know Blue would protect them by default because he'd chase off a predator - not to protect the chickens but because he doesn't like predators
