I am a very Catholic male. I think Muslim women are beautiful, Strong and powerful women. People that lack faith don't understand why we try to dress modestly. In fact, a man of faith loves women that are modest and respect their own sexuality. I believe that we can do this. We can go global and have global standards without infringing on local cultures. It really is a small world and there is no other way.

@IC1101 actually liking a culture that is predominately muslim without liking islam is completeley legitimate - I am Iranian and love the culture (much of it is actually pre-islamic) but that is separate from my feelings about the religion (although islam tends to be more intertwined with culture than most religions)

My problem is not the want for unique culture, it is the pressure for others to accept these cultures. Also, in some cases, the forceful nature of some people within these cultures trying to forcefully indoctrine others into this culture.

This video has so many dislikes because she's Muslim and wearing the Abaya. That's so ignorant. People are so quick to judge based on looks and religious beliefs, most of the time it's the adults that are screwing up. To the one person asking about why Muslims come here to America and change their names/styles - I have the same question for you, why do Christians convert to Islam and change their names? The women even wear the scarf and marry Muslim men! I know may that converted and are happy.

Wow, so many of these comments are so ethnocentric. The point she is trying to make is that Arab culture (or any culture) should not strive to be as Western as possible; rather there should be a reasonable give and take between all cultures whether Western or Arab or African or East Asian. While Arab culture may not be utopia, lets not pretend our Western culture is either.

@MissSCEBliss Well then this may be a surprise to you but I live in the middle east and I'm a Muslim. Well EX-Muslim. When I say our culture needs to change, I meant into a secular and rational culture. In no way is the western culture perfect, far from it. I'm simply proposing that the religious aspects of culture be removed entirely because they're outdated and extremly harmful and isolating. The abaya in the arab world for example is extremely sexist for instance. And much more.

@kloud8447
@kloud8447 7 лет назад
people are stupid and want to impose their own biased opinions/standards on others, regardless of the topic at hand. to them, the fact that she's wearing the abaya is provocative enough. and even though she's stating it's within her own will that she wears it, they still need to point out that somehow that's not true and she's oppressed. Gold stuff really, apparently you're oppressed if you don't wear a bikini.. just ignore them, enjoy the video!

@IC1101 It's true that America was founded as a secular nation and is one according to its constitution however constitution does not equal culture. America is way more religious and specifically christian than almost any other developed nation such as European nations. I don't mean to say it's more religious in its constitution than other nations, but a much more religious culture. I'm not sure what you mean about Europe and middle east, middle east is muslim and Europe is way less religious.

I find it interesting that when one of those Arabic women we supposedly feel so sorry for, actually shows up and delivers an eloquent and interesting presentation in such a high-profile venue -regardless of what she's wearing and for what reason- the immediate response is alarm and disdain, rather than appreciation and applaud. I suppose she'll have to be in a miniskirt and a tanktop for us to call her "Westernized" and therefore "Okay". Enough with this Islamo/Arabo-phobia nonsense.

The past where, a simple infection from tooth decay could kill u, a past where basic water & food was hard come by. You suggest your lifestyle is something better? It is better "because" it is off the back of those whom looked forward to a modern world. @Destinay4lyf What's to answer? The fact that you cannot see gender inequity, oppression of women, and the misogyny that occupies modes of the Muslim social and political world just goes to show how misguided you are. I've given plenty of examples below, scroll back and read. As for nuns wearing habits, well they do not get raped, beaten or jailed if they choose not to wear them do they? Can you really not see the difference?

@AllahIsTheSustainer Double standards? What kind of hypocritical comments are u offering here in your rant? The reason a women covers her self from the point of Islam is that a covering of cloth is supposed to keep the sexual appetites of passing men at bay when women travel outside the home. Supposedly this should be able to save a woman's life, since she is usually assumed to bear the responsibility of unlawful sexual encounters? What kind of messed up male logic is that?
@foxxxin
@foxxxin 12 лет назад
cont'd ...and that is only part of us. (Americans, that is) See, one thing that culture means is that if you go from home to home, you will find that people are the same. They cook the same, dress the same, raise their children the same, etc. while in America in some neighborhoods you'd be lucky to find any two homes where they do ANYthing the same! Do you see what I mean? I love your ideas but until you take this into account what you have is wonderful rich culture vs NO culture.

@PacalB just like christianity they have different types of islam, in sunnah, no woman must wear a scarf, a man may only marry another woman if the first one cannot give children, you are not allowed to force anybody to pray for his relationship with god is between him and god, you are not allowed to invest in banks with interest and banks that use your money without your notice (that is why we werent hit as hard when the economy crashed) and mant more things that i cant write in 400 characters

@JohnGaltHasSpoken The US government enforcing their "democracy" in other nations (regardless of whether democracy is good or bad). As your law criminalizes physical assaults, our law criminalizes verbal assault on certain subjects. If a certain nation doesn't criminalize piracy, that doesn't give them the write to hack US computers. i don't wear a head scarf and I am not from a Middle eastern country and not very religious but hey I'm ignorant when I say head scarf is not religious but cultural as shirehorse91 might say(MIGHT). For years head covering has been a sign of aristocracy, thus you will never see a member of royalty go outside in public without a hat. Women before the 70's wore head scarfs and that was cultural. But muslims wearing a head scarf makes it a religious statement?
@shirehorse91
@shirehorse91 12 лет назад
@g00gel The difference between western media and that Muslim countries is plurality. Western media has a variety of opinions and debate. The M.East has state/religious propaganda and no debate. M. Easterners aren't self critical while the West is. Your statement is evidence of that perspective. You blindly regurgitated what you were told with no evidence or thought that evidence is required. Learn self-reflection and critical thinking first before accusing others.

@WhoStoleMyEpicName Yes I agree sometimes religious people do become arrogent in their faith and that's a big problem again it's misunderstanding of religion acknowledge it. On the death penelty, well usa no less has the death penalty as a form of justice, Islam actually frees those in slavery. In your country you have all sorts of slaves whether it be financial/work/economic/women objects list goes on and on. You can't run away from it.

@azcentralsurprise Bottom line: 1. The west will justify their quest for oil with whatever story they see fit. 2. Radical Fundamentalism exists just as much in the US as any other country. 3. Im not fighting someone who never had a problem with me, (or you) ... you want me to fight someone who YOU started a war with? Your government saw Oil and Hijabs .. got excited and scared simultaneously and called everyone who had either oil or a hijab .. a terrorist.

@putittogether, actually it was not founded by a war lord and Islam teaches tolerance and acceptance of other faiths. Unfortunately, popular media has only found it appropriate to share the extremist point of view borne of ignorance and dark age mentality that has very little resemblance to the real Islam. I don't blame you for feeling that way, but I will suggest you do a bit more research on the subject before making such statements.

@azcentralsurprise - Not true. With age bitterness can come... darkness of the heart through lose of those who they loved... and blindness of thoughts to rationalize the crap they have done in there life... some people don't get wiser with age just duller, due to not dealing with there shit and life properly or wanting someone to blame rather than be realistic. I am not a idealist or utopian. I look at what is realistic. You have given up and became cynical.

@azcentralsurprise - The truth that a panda is there does not make it less true because you believe it is not there due to never seeing one. Now I don't believe what is said in the bible is literal just like a kids story is exaggerated. But I do think there is defiantly the possibility of something spiritual. I will look in to this as much as possible before I define myself as anything. It could just be imagination... but it does not explain the placebo effect.

@azcentralsurprise - I was a atheist. I believed a lot of theories and though there was no good. And fully believed that for a short while. It is liberating but that does not make it true just because you want to believe it is. I had experience which made me wonder. I know one thing for sure... you can believe what you like, romance with it... but if your wrong just because it seems right to you does not make it less wrong. I am agnostic because I don't know.

@azcentralsurprise - Age is meaningless, experience, knowledge, research and what you have done with your life is what matters. If you judge people on how they look, race or religion then chances are you are a bigot. And possible a stubborn old one due to say one or two people doing something horrible to you, that you can't over come... or people saying crap with no evidence all the time. If you spent most your life in a pub and working as a builder chances are you know jack.

@987sunrise That is not exactly my point. It is almost as if she is saying no one is allowing them to dress as they like. Don;t get me wrong, I think we in the west are as guilty of pressuring our cultures on the east. I just feel that as a whole, I do not care what you wear, as long as you are not destroying my culture to do so. I do not want Middle Eastern culture blended into my own, much as they prefer limits on westernization. You see from both sides a bluring of this. youtube char limit!
