Just getting my head around the Shelly devices and what they can do and how to set up. Interesting comment you made about Shellycloud running on Android being a bit of a dog. Resetting up a device yesterday nothing was working (I didn't think to use IOS) but after restarting my Android phone, things started to work (as you would expect). Thanks for the vids. Cheers, David

I obviously think they are great mostly because they are so flexible in how and where you can use them, and so much easier to setup than Zwave, I think every zwave puck I've installed over the years, there has been some weird parameter number to look up and change, or some hassle. And thanks for checking out the video!!

Hi James, quick question after your very informative video. I have a wifi smart bulb on my ceiling which I control by voice. If I flip its wall switch off (a 2-position on/off flip switch), I lose the ability to control the light by voice (WAF problem). If I insert a Shelly 2.5 behind the switch, does it prevent that scenario ? do I need a push switch instead like in your video ? Or is the Shelly not a workaround in that situation ? Thank you !
@SparkyJames
@SparkyJames 4 года назад
Hi Jerome, yes a shelly would fix that, but you would need a neutral at your switch, if your don't have a neutral, the new shelly dimmer that will ship soon will work with or without a neutral on 230/240v. Also shelly is releasing a single relay unit no neutral required but its not out yet it might be on there website for pre order . You could either use the existing lamp with the relay unit or put in a new standard lamp, if it's only one lamp low wattage and you go the no neutral way, you will need a bypass cap which shelly might sell not sure but they are usually available from many sources, and fit it at the light fitting. Hope that helps, if you 110v with no neutral you will need you rewire the light or lose the smart lamp to get your waf.

Hi Jimmy , Thank you for the very useful video. I configured my Shellies in the app with cloud on for all of them set a static ip and then added them to Home assistant using the Shelly intergration. Is the purpose of Shelly for Hass to re-configure the devices for use with MQTT (which I would need to do manually if I didn't use the addon) ? Thank you in advance.
@SparkyJames
@SparkyJames 3 года назад
Hi Stavros, the Shelly for Hass integration has is just an alternative to Shelly integration, the, they both work well , but from my experience Shelly for hass supports more of the features available and has been around longer.

@@SparkyJames thank you for the reply/ I finally installed the shellies with the official intergration. I thing it offers all the options Shelly for HASS offers and it is more "user friendly"

Your videos are really well done! Question about your dimmer setup in the kitchen: can you use that second switch to remotely control another dimmer?
@JamesEggleston
@JamesEggleston 4 года назад
Thanks Christoph, Yes you could, but it would be not straight forward, you would need to do it through Home Assistant, I would probably use App Daemon to do it, it might not work quite as well as there would be a some lag, processing the button press and dimming duration over the network.
@christophhaug
@christophhaug 4 года назад
@@JamesEggleston I didn't know about AppDaemon before but I'm surprised that I'd need another app (apart from HA) for this. Anyway, are you saying that while switching via mqtt will be very fast, dimming will be delayed?
@SparkyJames
@SparkyJames 4 года назад
@@christophhaug To clarify, you can very easily turn on and off another dimmer with the second button and a simple automation, but to dim the light up and down would be the tricker part as you would need to continuously step the level up as long as the button is pressed, I haven't tried it but I think I would find using app daemon easy to achieve it, though there is probably other ways to do it. App Daemon is an add-on inside home assistant, and uses Python to create more complex automations.

After a few hours work im still trying to get this easy to install app to work. 1)HACS is not included in a "Fresh install" on the image i'm using (raspberry pi 64 bit)...however finally got that working with command line on ssh 2)I've now got the issue that the interation does not appear on the integrations page. NB: this is an unofficial add-on!
@dbalauca
@dbalauca 4 года назад
same for me. can't find any integration under Configuration>Integrations after installing it from HACS. Did you manage to solve this? // later edit: Figured it out myself after reading the update log on the facebook group. Current latest ShellyForHASS release is not fully compatible with 1.8 firmware on Shelly devices. An update is expected soon.

Thanks Micheal, and no I believe that are not certified in Australia, just the Shelly 2.5 I believe has UL certification, which is not an Australian cert but would count for something, if they were to certify it I would say.

I currently have my ShellIes setup using mqtt. But I’ve noticed that not all functionality is easily visible there. For example I don’t have the IP address. I think I’ll need to switch these over to be able to get more details without a lot of effort. For example, I need the ip to connect to it to set things like nighttime light level. Or, any other setting on the web interface that is not accessible in ha.
@SparkyJames
@SparkyJames 4 года назад
I agree I had all those problems. It was actually pretty easy to change over, easier than I thought. I just backed up, made a list of the shelly devices and what they were by the MAC address(last 6 numbers) deleted all my shelly MQTT entries in config, restarted and deleted the unused entities and then installed Shelly for Hass, I was a little surprised by how well it all went, Home Assistant has come a long way, it's getting a little bit easy.
@neilbrookins8428
@neilbrookins8428 4 года назад
Jimmy James thank you for providing a possible cutover process. I will let you know what happens. So, because my shellies already are on WiFi and running webserver, I don’t think I need to do anything to have the Shelly for hass discover them. Meaning they don’t need to be on Shelly cloud since that’s disabled when mqtt is enabled.

I was able to successfully setup and get everything working. It took me as long to setup HACS as it did to setup Shelly for ha. Finally I have all the data from my dimmer right in ha. I’ve wanted this for a long time. I can see the temperature and watts and uptime radio strength and dhcp assigned IP address. It’s great!!!!!

There is a python script that uses MQTT that I like better. It updates state changes faster. It’s on HACS.

Could it be that you installed the shelly for hass repository before you searched for Shelly under integration? That's what I had to do before I was finally able to access the integration.
@SparkyJames
@SparkyJames 4 года назад
Hi Christoph, did you install Shelly for Hass from the HACS ? In the video I installed it fresh from HACS and it comes up in integrations you might have to do a restart of HA. HACS itself is a little tricky to install there are a few videos on how to do that out there. Just thinking about how HACS works you need a Github token for it to download integrations. I’ll try out a new system this week and see if I can replicate the issue you had.
@christophhaug
@christophhaug 4 года назад
@@SparkyJames Yes, I installed it from HACS. It seems that HACS and/or HASS GUI has changed quite a bit since you made the video. It looks different. I'm just starting to learn HACS so I'm not sure what more they changed, but it seems they took out some of the default repositories or split up repositories and integrations into two things or something. Another possibility could be that my HACS simply hadn't downloaded all repositories yet when I searched for shelly. But that would mean it takes at least 30 minutes for HACS to download all repositories, which seems unlikely.
@minifugi
@minifugi 4 года назад
@@christophhaug Exactly the same issue here, looks very different from the video. I fixed it by manually entering "shelly:" in the configuration.yaml file. As with you the "Shelly smart home" option didnt show up under integrations. It does after manually adding it :)
@christophhaug
@christophhaug 4 года назад
@@minifugi Good to hear I'm not the only one struggling. HASS has a steep learning curve and things seem to be changing so fast and the many install variations don't really make things easier. Plus they wanted to discontinue certain variants but then reconsidered that but still renamed them so that you sometimes spend more time figuring out which tutorial actually applies to your situation... I'm starting to see why people buy commercial systems... I think I'm going to give Hubitat a try, thought they say the learning curve is similarly steep...

@SparkyJames
@SparkyJames 4 года назад
Hi Enric, you don't need shelly: in the config file, you can remove it, I don't think it would stop it working though, to add the shelly integration, on the integration menu in the bottom right there is a plus(sorry you can't actually see it in the video) click on that and search for shelly smart home in there.

It works fine, but the time uset by hassio to update the status of the shelly devices is pretty higher than using the shelly as a REST entity. There's also an option, on the config menu, but is still slow updating.
