i think its pretty rediculous to shift gears like in a russian tank when you are driving a simulator and only press tiny buttons in reality, but each to their own :)
@@inevitablecraftslab It's not ridiculous, people are different. When I drive sims, I am tense, I grip the wheel like I am trying to bend steel. I slam shifts like Barry does. I can't help it. I can relax a bit if I am just cruising around a track in Sunday drive mode, but if I am racing or qualifying, I am incapable of easing up. Everyone is different. And anyway, it isn't pressing tiny buttons, it is sensing a magnetic field. If you watched the video, he describes this.
Agreed and people wonders why their stuff breaks while some last their entire life. Everyone has different styles ofc but when your's is tense and aggressive well just be mindful.
Just a note: the PCBs have not the spring as shock absorber, the PCBs and their sensors can be move in order to delay or fasten the activation, so closer would make the shifting sooner and further would do it later. Thanks Sim Racing Garage
i like the Newt very much! One suggestion, instead of screwing the top plates on, use small high power magnets so it would only take a few seconds to change from H to Seq. just a suggestion.
@@Wilburnator Actually I think that can be mitigated by using a dowel type rod to place and pin the plate laterally (plus it also sits in a recess of the frame of the shifter) so a magnet is really just for holding it DOWN in place. A few strong neodymiums should be able to do that nicely. I'd love to see them take a whack. One if not two of these (shift and ebrake) is def on my short list and quick-switch the plates is the only thing missing imo. (Like, they did so well with quick-switch for the actual shift rod and then the plates need tools?..)
@@Wouldpkr - Even high power magnets would give up dealing with the immense leverage effects the rod exerts on the plates, I fear. Ah, just noticed John already mentioned this. :D

Hi I have it for 2 years, it is still new giving it a lot of use. It has a powerful touch and feels great in the strength it makes. Very comfortable to adapt to any chassis. In their two functions in H and sequential, they act very well, adjustable in hardness. It is not advisable to change the knob for a heavy one, since it diminishes the sensation of strength, always very light knobs, such as those that it brings as standard, or of aluminum; but thin and light. A job very well done for a low price, I recommend it 100%.
I am between the th8a and the shh. How it compares with the th8a (but with mod - like the 3drap mod cambio for improved feel - included)? Do the 2 shifters have the same resistance in h pattern mode?

I have one of the older models and it has been great. I got sick of waiting for the Heusinkveld h-pattern shifter and got this instead. I replaced the knob with an after market knob just so I had a bit more weight. I am very happy with my purchase so far.
Adding some inserts to the side for additional stability looks pretty easy (just drill a couple of holes, add inserts, use a straight bracket to attach the side of the shifter to the side of the profile).
Holy cow, these guys are Spanish! And from Irún!! My girlfriend (my wife in about a month!) spent most of her teenage years there, so quite a special place for us :) Proud that such a small and young company is making such a cool product - I’d buy one in a heartbeat, but I only have a PS4. great shifter for a very good price. It's really silence, I have the previous version though but I'm loving it. I would consider buying another one for separate sequential shifter use
if you want more resistance/tension, remove the screws that adjust the tension and replace them with longer ones, i did this about 2 yrs ago, works really well. I can get double the tension than out of the box. SHH told me this could brake it but i think they were being safe, mine has not broke :)
Yes, you can do that to get more tension. I know yours has not broken, but the threaded holes in that ABS piece were not designed to go beyond pressures achieved with the stock screw length. But hey, I'm all about pushing hardware to it's limits! And that ABS piece looks to be easy to replace if one of the screws ever stripped out the threads. Or, just tap some more threads in it if there is enough ABS material left.
@@simracinggarage3026 you could also use brass inserts etc tapped in to the abs piece i guess or something similar. Just 1cm longer actually makes a good difference to tension and is where i like it. Because i put a heavy shifter knob on it , which also made it taller, i had to extend the screw length to get the tension back again and id say its about double tension from what it was if i remove the knob i put on it and use the light printed one. I have one of these and it is absolutely worth the price. Better then TH8, i had Logitech (i had G25), I have not tried the Fanatec yet. I think if you are in doubt beetween Logitech, Thrustmaster and this one, the choice is easy. Maybe this is a Tier 2 shifter, but the best of Tier 2 shifters.
@@MrHamster1982 Barry said it all. In the H mode, they are not so much different (even if personally I feel a lot better SHH Shifter). Even if not so realistic, it gives you a nice feeling. In sequential mode I really like it a lot and feel a lot realistic to me, even if I have seen some reviews that say it is not. But I am not a real driver! Anyway I repeat : according to me in the 100ish tier, this is the best one. And another important thing: it is a solid product. If I will not be unlucky, i think this will last a loooong time. I own this since one year, playing almost every day and it is still perfect like the first day.
Thanks for the in-depth review, Barry! I had some initial worries about my unit "springing" back to neutral too aggressively, but it's apparently just the profile that the bearings roll in they used. Since the clunk also happened while you were shifting into neutral to show off the mechanism (22:11), my worries are gone.
I have had this shifter for almost 1 year. It is far better than a Thrustmaster TH8A. The only defect is the small knob, not very ergonomic. GG Shh Shifter!
How much more force is needed to shift than the stock TH8A? I have modded my 3 TH8A shifters and am debating if I should get the SHH shifter and move 1 of mine over to my son's wheel setup. With mine being modded it made a world of difference so I've been debating this for a few months now.
@@EricGibson1 I've had a modified TH8A before, but this is much better. You can adjust the spring to your liking. Too bad about the plastic body, but it's not a big deal.
This shifter looks awesome and is next on my list of gear. Barry mentions other shifters at this price point, but as far as I know, there aren't any. The only one cheaper is the Logitech shifter, but it's proprietary to Logitech wheels. Also, I think you get one choice of mount included, then it's extra if you want more.
Damn youshould shoot an episode on 'how to afford all toys that i have'. I remember a 240z on your background, now it's a hot bike... and the hardware you test is crazy, i remember Quaife shifter. Man.. I feel I'm a looser.
Great review Barry thank you. They could have made the H/Seq switch internal and automatic when you push/turn to switch modes. Maybe a similar magnetic sensor type deal like in the shifters themselves. An internal gate could also spin around to lock a Seq mode without having to install an external gate. They could sell it for 150 easy this way. But anyway, seems like a very nice shifter. Cheers.

After spending WAY too much on the r5 bundle and for shipping, I needed a budget shifter that can mount to a desk that isn't crappy. This is far cheaper with shipping than the th8a shifter and seems much better.
Thanks Barry, wonderful review as always! The product looks valid and there is a lot of thought behind it when it comes to design a materials used but... the price is still stopping me from ordering one.
46:12 "You can see it's actually moving some..." It honestly looks like what's happening is that the mounting piece is bending, rather than the ABS chassis of the shifter having much give at all. EDIT: And by "mounting piece", I mean the L-shaped metal plate, not the chunky aluminum profile.

Quick question that I haven't found an answer to elsewhere: Are the "buttons" that the SQ mode activates the same buttons as used for the H-gate mode? For years I've been wanting a shifter that converts between the two modes and uses different buttons for both, so that I don't have to remap the controls in-game when changing over. =)
@@jubuttib The shifter has a lateral switch that changes sensor function between 3rd/10th and 4th/9th, so you can map 3rd as 3rd gear and 10th as "downshift", 4th as 4th and 9th as "upshift". You don't have to remap anything ;)
awesome review, i am looking to get one sometime soon, right now i am still using my trusty old Porsche GT3 Fanatec shifter. its lasted years of shifting, but this one looks more professional. Love your rig, i am sure you can get better lap times with a pro rig like that.

Wow I never heard of this shifter before and just went on the website to see. I may just get one ordered. It looks like they are experiencing increased popularity because they state they are having problems keeping up with demand.
I have the shh shifter and i'm happy with it. Very beautiful shifter (i recommend the carbon fiber style plate/also the 6 gears instead of the 7 gears one)
@@diamondjing2746 Just push and twist to get sequential. Flick a swith to change the button numbers for sequential so you don't have to overwrite your H mapping.
Hello, I woul like to ask you if all the plate variations (6R, 7R and seq) are part of the basic package or if you get only one plate and the rest you must buy. Berry says it comes with extras plate but on webside it says only one. Times changes and since you are the last one ordeing it please share the info ;)
thanks barry, i was really looking forward for this review. I am now deciding between this or the fanatec one, but i still think the fanatec is way overpriced for its quality..I would like to hear your thoughts on that.
The Fanatec shifter gives you a better tactile "click" feeling when you get into gear (like Barry mentions the shifting on SHH is smooth). It also has mechanism to avoid getting into 7th or reverse accidentally (which I do a lot on my SHH). IMO overall Fanatec shifter is a better product in terms of functionality. However you would be paying for more than twice the price of an SHH. So it all comes down to your preference and your budget. I also have had great experience with SHH customer service (while Fanatec custom service is often pretty bad). They were very responsive and helpful. For me personally I like the SHH a lot, but if I would drive manual cars a lot more often than I am currently doing, I would have chosen a Fanatec shifter over SHH.
The NEWT has an updated h pattern gate so it has solved a lot of the accidentally getting into 7th or reverse problem. Also to be fair the one thing the Fanatec shifter has vs SHH is that neutral is an analog controller so you can actually use it as an analog handbrake whereas the SHH doesn't. I own a recently purchased NEWT and haven't missed a shift since.
don't know if they producers of the shifter are ok with full dissambly of their products and revealing their technical secrets but indeed this shifter has some great amount of thinking behind the scenes
What would stop a competitor from buying one on their own and disassembling it? The video is thorough for subscribers to make better informed decisions on what piece of kit they would like to add or not want to add to their rig.
Looks nice but i m concerned about the difficulty - or not - about going into the 5th or 6th gear..Would love to see a six speed plate (without the reverse gear). The reverse could be engaged by pushing the knob down and putting the stick into 1st gear...
Quite the amazing job as always ! - Im wondering if a shifter could double as a nose wheel tiller in Flight Sim ? I cant find anything satisfying to use as a nose wheel tiller, an axis that moves forward and backwards, or turns like a dial.

I was thinking if you just used a "U" shaped clamp, pretty easy to bend and drill. Or maybe the company could supply two L ones and have one with an open rail rather than holes so it can be mounted and slid up and down to match the mounting width?

I have the version of this that came right before this one and it has been awesome. Since I only use it for stock cars on Iracing I would like to have a plate for 4 speed with reverse up and left. I have access to a laser to cut an aluminum plate, would this be a problem or should I find some derlin to cut on waterjet?
@@Haris1977 I bought it so I don't have 3 shifters. It doesn't feel that bad honestly. The SHH shifter is a little easier but not by much. It is a little to easy to bump out of gear too if you're not careful depending on where you have it placed and how you have your hand when driving. So far so good as it really like it. Again down a shifter so less cables nad makes it a little cleaner. I have the SHH shifter for sequential and H pattern and 1 TH8A for truck simulation driving with a mod. I had 1 TH8A sequential mode and 1 in H pattern mode and 1 for truck simulation.
That voluptuous hair of Barry is getting so long I’m getting worried it may get tangled in the H pattern! For all of us concerned fans of your hair, Barry, PLEASE, be careful using this 3D contraption.
What a coincidence, I was just looking at this. Thanks for the very thorough review. What would you say between this and the Fanatec CSS1.5? I know they're essentially in different budget brackets, but just wondering if this holds a candle to the CSS?
I had the SHH 7R last year and wasn't a fan; shifting felt unnatural to me, as I didn't like the spacing between gates and the shifter stiffness was way too tough/fake feeling. Sold it and went to the CSS, which is lightyears better. I highly recommend the CSS.
@@kingcars by chance what do you mean shifter stiffness? How much force to shift gears is what I'm guessing. I have modded my TH8A shifters to be harder to shift for a more tactical and lifelike to a real car.
@@EricGibson1 Yes, that is partially what I was referring to. Before I go further, I'll just say that obviously this is anecdotal but it is my current experience. I've owned and driven manual transmission cars for the last 13 years, and I currently own 5 - a 2017 Shelby GT350, three 1988 Ford Thunderbirds and a 2015 Volkswagen GTI. I've driven various other manual transmission cars as well, such as older muscle cars. Not a single manual transmission car I have ever driven has felt anything remotely like the SSH shifter in terms of stiffness or gate spacing; granted, I haven't driven a gated manual in real life, though, so those cars might have more similarities. The Fanatec Clubsport shifter provides an infinitely closer resemblance in general to the cars I have driven and experienced. The muscle memory is nearly identical and the overall feel is very close, at least in terms of a $250 simulated shifter. I also generally have issues with the sentiment I see among a lot of sim racing enthusiasts that a stiffer shifter is more realistic. Might be true to some extent, but generally it's not. Real life manual shifters don't require a ton of effort.
@@kingcars yeah It shouldn't be hard to switch gear but should be harder to shift than the stock TH8A shifter as it almost just falls out of gear if u keep hand on it (stock). I have mine set up so it feels like I'm shifting something and not moving something if that makes sense.
Great review! I have an older model of SHH shifter which does not have the screw-on adapter. Do you have any insight where to get one of those shown at 6:00 ? I tried a few aftermarket shifter knobs, but the rubber tube did not hold rotation well when I switch from H pattern to seq from time to time.
Same problem as with most shifters, lack of resistance when shifting... I want to feel a similar sensation as in my MX-5 but don't want to spend the money the Quaife shifter costs :/
I like to be able to shift with my pinky. Really what they need is variable resistance. If you've got the revs right it should fall in, and if not it should vibrate and make you jam the thing in like a half-missed shift.
As someone that 3D prints I can say that they need to really work on their settings for printing. Those lines are just signs of wrong temps/print settings and possibly even a bad leveling on the bed.
Actually the printing is quite good but hard studio lightning + our little trick (which gives a brighter finishing ABS doesn't have) exaggerates the layer effect. I cannot put photos here but trust me, it is a good print. About the ghosting, yes, it has in some places but it is because we have to print very fast in order to deliver the orders... Each body printing is almost 14 hours. Thanks guys for your constructive critics, we need them to improve!

So I've always had this question.. you can't downshift from 6th to 2nd directly in these "H pattern" shifters? In real manual cars (obviously just non racing, regular driving) let's say I need to reduce speed, so I'm in about 5th gear, I just hold the clutch, press the brakes a little, and stay on N until I need the throttle again, then I'm engage 2nd or 3rd gear and release the clutch. Is that not possible in sim/games? Or just something not optimal in terms of speed?
Why do you think that's not possible in the first place? That's one of the main features of an H-shifter, otherwise it would just be a more complicated sequential which would make no sense at all. Now as a friendly hint: the way you describe your real car driving you a) waste fuel and b) wear the clutch unnecessarily. To avoid both you should let off the throttle and let the car roll *in gear* and then later shift down to the desired lower gear and put it *in gear* again directly. That way you'll save fuel since when rolling in gear the ECU in road cars will switch off fuel injection so you're rolling without using any fuel. In contrast to that the ECU will inject fuel when you're rolling while holding the clutch and also if you'd roll in neutral. The reason for that is that otherwise the engine would stall so fuel is injected to keep it rotating. Regarding holding the clutch while rolling or standing at a red light that will cause a lot of wear on the clutch. So at a red light it's best to engage neutral. Regarding skipping gears on downshifting in real racecars that comes down to car, driving style, grip conditions etc.. So you might see drivers engage each gear when shifting down with blipping the throttle at the right moments while others will engage only one other gear between 6th and 2nd for example while another driver could go directly from 6th to 2nd with only one (in that case heavier of course) blip of the throttle. Anybody reading this please correct me if something I mentioned is wrong :-)

I've always heard about the fuel consumption when on N so generally I take that into account, what I described above is not what I do 100% of the time, it's more to illustrate what I wanted to do in game. But still, I do that sometimes and I should indeed avoid it, what you've said about the injection while on N makes sense. Thanks for that! On the other subject I might wanna invest on that shifter, I enjoy it so much more in real life, if it's indeed anything comparable to the real thing I think it'll be worth getting one.
@@johnf.kennedy3175 I play mostly Gran Turismo and Asseto Corsa. I think you've answered already. From this video I had the impression you couldn't downshift more then 1 gear at a time.
Sinc Media that was exactly what I was thinking, maybe 0.5 or 1.0 mm longer would do the trick. But the stress on the internals might become to much, I guess it would void warranty for sure.
Sinc Media solid choice, I just went for the SHH because my whole rig is a wooden diy deal and I have no other fanatec gear so I would also need the pretty pricy USB adapter. I’m sure the Fanatec is the better solution but I only drive stick or sequential about 1/3 of the time so this will have to do.
@@fastfolky yeah. My next rig is going to be a ddw with a sim labs cockpit so it would probs be ideal, i also mostly drive h pattern or siquential. I would still have to get the adaptor though which is annoying
@@fastfolky Be carefull, the Fanatec has some serious issues with misshifting! Instead of 5th gear mine shifts into Reverse sometimes. Their support is not really good and I havent seen any case on the internet yet where they solved this issue to full satifaction of their customer. Also the sequential shiftermode is so bad to a point that I just stopped using it. The throw is too long and it has unrealistic stong amount of resistance. I think the whole shifter is way overpriced, and I regret buying it.

Is the mounting for this the same as say Fanatec’s mounting holes? In other words if your rig is drilled for Fanatec, logitech and thrustmaster will their mounting bracket bolt right on with no drilling?
It look likes a great shifter for the price. SHH did a great work on the shift but the print quality is horrible. I own many printers and trust me, you can do much much better than that. Very fonctionnal tho so thumbs up for that, but please guys, tune your printers!
The holes for the mounting option are always in the front. If you mount the shifter like you say the shifter will work anyway but everything would be reversed too.
Barry, is it my phone or your camera? Your head is cut off in a lot of the video. And I have never seen/noticed that before. Like final thoughts I see your chin and lower only.
